Abstract

In this study, we aimed to investigate the modal meanings of the ‘bound noun + sipda/hada' construction and to analyze the characteristics of each phrase. ‘guess' and ‘possibility' are closely related as aspects of epistemic modality. The forms ‘-nun/ul tut-sipda/tut-hada/seong-sipda' subjective guess on the possibility of an event occuring. The forms ‘-nun/ul beop-hada/man-hada' signify an estimation of the possibility of an event occurring. Specifically, ‘-ul beop-hada' represents [inferential speculation], and ‘-ul man-hada' signifies [necessity], which are rooted in the meaining of the bound noun prior to its grammaticalization. It was suggested that the depiction of guessing expressions using the ‘bound noun + sipda/hada' structure
in current Korean textbooks should be reviewed and supplemented. Furthermore, Grammar books for Korean language teachers for these guessing expressions are presented.
