Abstract

The article examines a poorly investigated problem: identifying the role of Anzali port (Gilan province) in increasing Russian economic and political influence in near-Caspian Iran at the end of the XIX - the beginning of the XX century. Special attention is paid to characterizing the concession on the reconstruction of Anzali port and nearby territories that was acquired by Moscow entrepreneur L. S. Polyakov in 1895. It is shown that this project fitted into the integrated system of Russian concession policy in the country. The author analyzes the results and importance of Anzali port reconstruction in the context of strengthening Russia’s position in northern provinces of Iran.
