Abstract

The character “𠂤(dui)”, “■” on oracle bone inscriptions and “𠂤(dui)” “■” “師(shi)”acle bone and bronze inscriptions can be also named , referring to people living in groups; or it can be called as “次(ci)”, referring to a military camp. Jinhousu Chime plays an important role in the research on the Western Zhou Dynasty bronze inscriptions. Based on three usages of the character “𠂤(dui)” as “𠂤” “■” “師” in Jinhousu Chime, this article analyses the character “𠂤” in “六𠂤(liu dui)” and “八𠂤(ba dui)” which has been always read as “師” in the Western Zhou Dynasty bronze inscriptions. Thus, it is found that there are 12 cases of the word “𠂤” in the Western Zhou Dynasty bronze inscriptions used as the meaning of “堆(dui)”. When it is used as “堆”, the verb “司(si)” or “正(zheng)” is often used before the word; In 7 cases, it used as the meaning of “■(次)”. When it used as “次”, the verb “省(sheng)” or the preposition “在(zai)” and “于(yu)” are often used before the word “次”; In 7 cases, it is used as “師”. When it is used as “師”, the verb “率(shuai)” and “命(ming)” or the preposition “以(yi)” are often used before the word “師”. This article provides an important clue for the study of bronze inscriptions through the comprehensive classification of the usage of “𠂤” in the inscriptions of Jinhousu Chime and the usage of “𠂤” in the bronze inscriptions of the Western Zhou Dynasty.
