Abstract

This study compared the characteristics of welding rod consumption, welding time, and welding economy of welding rods of various diameters commonly used in shielded metal arc welding to select an appropriate welding method for structures. The results of the study revealed that for welding a test piece, an average of 3.5 rods was consumed for ø3.2-mm welding rods, while an average of 1.93 rods was consumed for ø4-mm welding rods. Converting the consumption to the cost of welding revealed approximately 601 KRW for ø3.2-mm welding rods and approximately 560.3 KRW for ø4-mm welding rods. Using larger ø4-mm welding rods reduced the cost by 40.7 KRW, which is equivalent to a 7.3% savings in rod welding expenses.
