Abstract

The problem of differentiation between homage to an worship of prophets and awliya is a centuries-long issue of Islamic theological science discussed by both theologians and secular researchers. Controversiasl attitudes thereto lead to an aggravation of relations in the religious environment and to a sharp deterioration of the socio-political situation in certain regions of the world. The latter can manifest itself in mutual accusations of disbelief by groups holding diametrally opposite views on this issue, which in some cases leads to armed conflicts. This issue has become one of the elements of the confrontation between Sufis and supporters of Wahhabism. The ways to resolve this conflict include strict adherence to the main Islamic sources of doctrine, namely the verses of the Holy Qur’an and authentic (mainly sahih, hasan) statements of Prophet Muhammad. The opinions of prominent theologians, representatives of madhhabs, are also to be considered if they do not contradict the Qur’an.
