Abstract

A review on the pattern of seasonal holidays is an example which shows what society Goryeo pursued. The Goryeo dynasty had two types of holidays divided by the movement of heavenly bodies and earthly one such as King’s birthday. The former as Tianshi (天時 literally meaning Heavenly Time) is to operate time by establishing a new holiday by inducing temporal order of nature. The latter as Renshi (人時 literally meaning earthly time) revealed royal authority by confirming the social contract, with magnificent formality, required in patriarchal order based on the political situation such as the accession of king to the throne or proclamation of reformation every year.BR Thus, this study purposed to understand how the meaning as well as designation and operation of Sokjeol in Goryeo national holidays were connected to temporal order of Goryeo in the pattern or form. For the purpose, the study selected specific holidays such as Sangwon (January Full Moon), Sangsa (Samjinnal, Double Third Festival), and Joongku (Double Ninth Festival) of Goryeo distinguished from those of Chosun, which is trying to understand the time perspective of Goryeo through establishment and operation of national holidays at that time.
