Abstract

This article analyzes the problem of emigration in the life and works of one of the most impor- tant representatives of Polish literary emigration of the twentieth century – Gustaw Herling-Grudziński. He was a Polish writer, journalist, essayist, World War II underground fighter and political dissident abroad during the communist system in Poland. The work of the writer called “Journal Written at Night” was the material for this re- search. “Journal Written at Night” contains valuable information regarding his views on the problem of emigra- tion, and also describes the opinions of his Polish émigré colleges on this issue. In addition, the article describes the reason for the emigration of the writer and analyzes the works in which he described his emigration experience.
