Abstract

This study examined phonological dependency as one of the characteristics of Korean delimiters. Based on the survey result, it was discussed how the number of syllables in the preceding units of the particles affects the possibility of integration. In the process, it was revealed which characteristics of respondents were correlated with the acceptability of delimiters. First of all, this paper proposes that a delimiters which can be inserted in auxiliary verb constructions, such as ‘나na’ in ‘먹어나 보자mekena poca’, and a particle capable of being inserted in derivatives, such as ‘-도to’ in ‘깨끗도 하다kkaykkusto hata’ have phonological dependence on preceding units. To figure out how the number of syllables in the preceding units affects the acceptability, a questionnaire survey was conducted with Korean speakers. As a result, in the case of the auxiliary verb construction, it was investigated that Korean speakers accepted two syllables of the preceding unit better than one or three syllables. In the case of derivatives, native roots were more accepted than
Sino-Korean roots. Respondents’ birthplace was not related to the acceptability but it was discovered that the younger the respondents, the higher the acceptability.
