Abstract

The research aims to determine how images of the New Testament are embodied in the speech genre “interpretation of the Gospel”, their significance and specifics of functioning. The research is novel in that it represents the first attempt to consider the peculiarities of existence of New Testament images in religious texts that are just now beginning to be explored by modern Russian scientists in a linguistic way using genre studies techniques from the standpoint of theolinguistics. As a result, it has been proved that images of the New Testament are used by the author in the interpretation of the Gospel to clarify the spiritual content of the texts on which he comments, affirm Christian ideas, highlight the most important Christian values, foster the readers’ respect for the values of Christian culture, reverence for God. The main means of elocution for creating images of the New Testament in the analysed texts are allegory, metaphor, emotional-expressive vocabulary, functional-stylistic vocabulary, epithets, similes.
