Abstract

The article analyzes the dynamics of productivity of the possessive adjective suffix -ов- in different periods of existence of the Russian language. For the first time the author considers the evolution of a word-formative type from the XI century to our days. In the Old Russian language the semantic center of adjectives with this suffix is the meaning of belonging, which fades with time under the influence of the type, already existing in the language, with a relative suffix -ов- , facilitating the transition of possessive adjectives to other categories. The explanatory and historical dictionaries of the Russian language are the material for the study.
