Abstract
This paper seeks to offer a post-colonial critique on the narrative of “History of Korean Language(國語史)” in the studies of Hunmin chŏngŭm and its problems represented mainly in Lee Ki-moon’s works within the post-1945 historical context of Cold War era. Going beyond this still dominant nationalist narrative of “History of Korean Language” which have continuously substantialized only the images of “Self” being uniquely Korean, this paper tries further to provide new transnational interpretations on the history of Sejong’s Hunmin chŏngŭm project within the particular historical context of late 14th and early 15th century East Asia. Then this paper finally tries to talk about what these new interpretations can contribute to critically understand the realities of ever-globalizing world we are facing now.
