Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the mediating effect of covert narcissism in the relationship between parent-child communication perceived by high school students, peer attachment and their smartphone addiction. For the purpose of the study, 239 high school students in Busan were tested for parent-child communication, peer attachment, covert narcissism, and smartphone addiction. Correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis were on the collected data and the results of this study are as follows. First, there is a significant correlation between parent-child communication perceived by high school students, peer attachment, covert narcissism, and smartphone addiction. Second, in the relationship between parent-child communication perceived by high school students and smartphone addiction, covert narcissism has a complete mediating effect. Third, in the relationship between high school students' peer attachment and smartphone addiction, covert narcissism has a complete mediating effect. These findings suggest the importance of healty management of covert narcissism as well as parent-child communication and peer attachment, which are major environmental factors for teenagers, to prevent high school students from smartphone addiction.
