Abstract

The purpose of this study is to verify the effects of covert narcissism on adolescents’ smartphone addiction through self-esteem as a mediating variable. For this purpose, 489 adolescents residing in Gyeonggi and Chungcheong provinces have been surveyed on smartphone addiction scales, covert narcissism scales, and self-esteem scales, and correlation and path model analysis have been conducted using SPSS statistical programs and R programs. The correlation analysis has found that there exist significant correlations among covert narcissism, self-esteem, and smartphone addiction. The conducted path model verification has shown that covert narcissism has a significant effect on smartphone addiction and that self-esteem has a significant effect on smartphone addiction as well. In addition, it has been found that the effect of covert narcissism on self-esteem is also significant. Through the utilization of the Bootstrapping method, it has been verified that covert narcissism has a significant indirect effect (mediating effect) on adolescents’ smartphone addiction through self-esteem as a mediating variable, and that covert narcissism has a significant direct effect on adolescents’ smartphone addiction. In other words, it has been found that covert narcissism affects smartphone addiction through self-esteem as a mediating variable. Based on these results, this paper has described significant points of this study and implications for adolescents’ smartphone addiction prevention and intervention programs.
