Abstract
The article for the first time analyzes the circumstances of V.V. Rozanov joining the staff of “Novoye Vremya” journal edited by A.S. Suvorin. It focuses on the support given by Rozanov to Suvorin at the critical moment of the latter’s career when the committee of the Writers’ Association was planning to accuse the editor of the secret collusion with the government. The accusation could discredit both the editor and the journal. The article highlights the connection between anti-Suvorin campaign and the attempt to start the new popular newspaper “Rossiya”. Rozanov supported Suvorin and even prepared a reply to the committee of Writers’ Association that marked the beginning of the long-lasting cooperation and confidential relationships between the editor and the publicist. Though Rozanov’s literary manner didn’t quite conform to the format of a popular newspaper, Suvorin initially published a lot of his articles as it was necessary to fill the gap after the resignation of two rather productive authors as the result of the above mentioned events. Working for “Novoye Vremya” and communicating with Suvorin Rozanov gradually developed a new manner of publicism and began to cover not only the topics that interested him but also political issues of general interest.
