Abstract
The article is devoted to analyzing a ring as a costume element in L. N. Tolstoy’s novel “Anna Karenina”. The multi-functionality of a costume lies in the fact that it is simultaneously a thing and a means to express the author’s attitude towards reality, to create historical colour, to develop the storyline. The paper shows that rings as elements of the main heroine’s costume serve not only as the markers of her social status, habits, taste, they also contribute to the inclusion of her image into the “vicious circle” motive becoming a metaphorical detail in the artistic texture of the novel.
