Abstract

The article analyzes the phenomenon of patriotism as one of the forms of nationalism. The author identifies two types of nationalism: conservative nationalism, the mechanism for achieving the goals of which is determined by legality within the legal field and the absolute sovereignty of the state, maintaining and strengthening its territorial integrity; radical nationalism aimed at achieving goals through direct violence or terror. The signs are revealed, in the presence of which patriotism is potentially transformed into chauvinism or xenophobia. The content of the policy of the West, which carries external and internal threats to the security and integrity of Russia, is noted. As a result of the analysis, the conclusion is formed that patriotism is a mechanism for protecting the state from an external enemy (it does not matter real or imaginary). Nationalism, on the other hand, realizes the possibility of counteracting the destruction of Russia by an internal enemy.
