Abstract

The development of electric power supply systems around the world from the early 20th century to their transformation nowadays is considered. The article contains a comprehensive analysis that takes into account the social, economic, institutional, and technological aspects of the problem. The analysis is supported by an extensive body of actual data on the above-mentioned development aspects of electric power supply systems along with the specific features of these aspects in different countries and in Russia. It is pointed out that in regard of efficiency and reliability indicators, the domestic electric power industry is inferior to the same indicators achieved by the late 20th century. The matters relevant for solving the problem are pointed out.
