Abstract
In this paper, we present the ways umbilical cord blood banking practices interrelate with the institutional forms of umbilical cord blood banks.The differing modes of utilizing umbilical cord blood are connected to the establishment of public and private banking. The public and private banks are associated with different social meanings. Public banks are associated with the principles of redistributive economy, while, the private banks with that of market economy. The practices of umbilical cord blood banks, as it has been demonstrated by studies from the interdisciplinary field “Science, Technology, Society”, render less rigid the distinction between public and private banking.By focusing on the mobility of the umbilical cord blood cells in a wide network of infrastructure and organizations that surround its utilization, we intend to show the factors that make problematic the binary and opposed consideration of the public-private character in the two modes of umbilical cord blood banking.

Στην εργασία αυτή εξετάζουμε πτυχές της λειτουργίας των τραπεζών ομφαλοπλακουντιακού αίματος (ΟπΑ), μιας κατηγορίας βιοτραπεζών που στοχεύει τόσο στην κλινική αξιοποίηση των αποθηκευμένων ιστών όσο και στην αξιοποίησή τους στην έρευνα. Το διεπιστημονικό αυτό πεδίο σπουδών, αντλώντας από την ιστορία, κοινωνιολογία, ανθρωπολογία, φιλοσοφία της επιστήμης και της τεχνολογίας, και τις πολιτισμικές σπουδές, τις σπουδές φύλου, και συναφή πεδία, επικεντρώνεται στην ανάδειξη της συνδιαμόρφωσης του επιστημονικού και τεχνολογικού φαινομένου και της κοινωνίας, επιδιώκοντας να αναδείξει τις κοινωνικές επιλογές που ενσωματώνεται στην παραγωγή και χρήση της επιστήμης και της τεχνολογίας.[3] Στη συνέχεια, στο τρίτο μέρος, παρουσιάζουμε μέρος των ευρημάτων της έρευνας που έχουμε πραγματοποιήσει με θέμα τη λειτουργία των τραπεζών ΟπΑ στην Ελλάδα.[4] Η εργασία εστιάζεται σε προσεγγίσεις που επιδιώκουν να ερμηνεύσουν την καθιέρωση των δύο μεθόδων φύλαξης μονάδων ΟπΑ σε σχέση με ευρύτερες πρακτικές διαχείρισης ανθρώπινων ιστών και κυττάρων, και σε παρατηρήσεις σχετικά με την πολιτική οικονομία που διαμορφώνεται γύρω από τις τράπεζες ΟπΑ. Δίνουμε έμφαση σε παρατηρήσεις που υπογραμμίζουν ότι η εξέταση των πρακτικών των τραπεζών, δημόσιου και ιδιωτικού χαρακτήρα, αμφισβητεί την αυστηρή διάκριση μεταξύ δημοσίου και ιδιωτικού
