Abstract

The article considers the role of linguistic categorization when studying the semantic structure of synonymous adjectives. Originality of the paper lies in the fact that for the first time the author identifies differential features and linguistic categories characterizing the semantics of the analysed synonyms. The analysis of lexicographical definitions of the English synonyms with the common meaning cunning and the corpus-based analysis of their usage show that variant/invariant and evaluative categories determine the meaning of the synonyms under study.
