Abstract

The study focuses on the shift of media consumption among elementary school students from text-based to video-based, primarily through platforms like YouTube. It highlights the necessity for guidance and monitoring of YouTube usage among elementary school students. The study utilized data from the 2020 Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey to examine YouTube literacy, media usage, and attitudes among 2,799 4th, 5th, and 6th - grade students. Findings reveal that most of students(89.8%) use YouTube, with males spending more time on media than females. Additionally, higher grades and smaller city sizes correlate with increased media usage. Moreover, male students and those in higher grades exhibit more positive attitudes towards YouTube. The study suggests tailored YouTube literacy education based on grade levels and emphasizes the importance of monitoring and regulating harmful content on the platform.
