Abstract

The article deals with one of the main competences of a New Ukrainian School – Information-digital competence. The authors analyze modern works on the problem given and characterize a new information society as the society which is able to form a creative, independent and active personality, to develop his/her personal intellect and information culture. The article focuses on the necessity for a teacher to be technologically literate and to be able to use ICT in teaching any subject at school. Particular attention is paid to the importance of Information – digital competence formation of senior learners by means of a foreign language that broadens the learners’ opportunities of using their knowledge, habits and skills in cross-cultural communication. The levels of information – digital competence formation, typical of teaching foreign languages are outlined. Based on results of a conducted research the advantages of information – digital technologies in comparison with traditional methods of teaching foreign languages are described, the functional possibilities of successful usage of these techniques are highlighted. It is established that senior learners acquire a sufficient level of language competence, have a definite speech experience, gain the skills of critical and creative thinking as well as well-developed communicative skills, can work in group and teams, freely use available electronic gadgets, and realize the importance of learning foreign languages and being digital literate for their successful future career. In view of all that the authors consider senior school to be the very school for information-digital competence development. The article contains the characteristics of skills necessary for the successful formation of information-digital competence and a set of activities for teaching foreign languages with the help of ICT in a secondary school.While creating ICT technologies the intentions of senior learners for self-development as a means of disclosing their creative potentials and the desire to learn from each other were taken into consideration. The article offers different modes of cooperative learning foreign languages on the basis of ICT. The effectiveness of the suggested ICTs in the information-digital competence formation by means of foreign languages was experimentally proved.
