Abstract

The article represents a generative attempt at outlining several parallels between the semantic selection properties of verb pairs constituting converse opposites such as sell ~ buy in Bulgarian, Swedish and Danish, and delineating differences and similarities between the languages under study with respect to the derivation of prototypical basic sentences with these predicates. Several hypotheses are tested for Bulgarian via comparison with Swedish and Danish, notably the Split vP Hypothesis, the Uniformity of Theta Assignment Hypothesis and the AgrOP and AgrIOP hypothesis. А proposal for the modelling of other antonym and synonym pairs is made to the effect that their s-selection should be constrained by a requirement for mutual similarity. Keywords: dative predicates, s-selection, converse antonymy, theta roles, Bulgari-an, Swedish, Danish
