Abstract

The article characterizes the pedagogical views of the great Russian thinker, writer and public figure L. N. Tolstoy (1828-1910). The main stages of his pedagogical activity are singled out. Leo Tolstoy’s contribution to the opening of schools in Krapivensky Uyezd is shown. His views as a supporter of the theory of free education are analyzed. The author traces the genetic connection between the pedagogical positions of L. N. Tolstoy and outstanding European and Russian teachers. The paper gives the description of the work of the school that was opened by him in the village of Yasnaya Polyana. Excerpts from L. N. Tolstoy’s correspondence with different people are presented.
