Abstract
The aim of the research is to reveal the holistic reflection of N. V. Gogol’s and F. M. Dostoevsky’s works in the folk environment (from public library to public theatre) in the second half of the 19th century. The article considers N. V. Gogol’s, F. M. Dostoyevsky’s, A. Ya. Alekseev-Yakovlev’s works, reviews of the critics, pedagogues, censors, people. The scientific originality of the research is determined by monographic approach, exploration of the second half of the 19th century periodicals, specialized literature, all the popular editions of classics known at that time. As a result, social and historical, cultural and educational, aesthetic factors of people’s comprehension of N. V. Gogol’s and F. M. Dostoevsky’s “theatrical” heritage have been systematized.
