Abstract
Due to the rapid technological and scientific advances nowadays, the need to improve scientific literacy has become increasingly important for Arab citizens. YouTube is a Web 2.0 video-sharing platform, widely used by ordinary citizens-called “YouTubers”- to increase the public's interest in science and science literacy. Through the theoretical framework of Media Richness Theory, this descriptive study aims to understand how individuals use YouTube as an online community to promote science literacy. This study employs qualitative content analysis of videos and comments of the most Egyptian viewed and subscribed user-generated scientific channels on YouTube (El-Da7ee7, Egychology, and El-Espitalia). The results show that in terms of richness, scientific YouTube channels are considered a high rich medium. Inspired by its publishing capacity, independent YouTubers became big hits by simplifying and popularizing science through their videos. Their success is backed by millions of views and subscribers, but most importantly, by having active comment sections on which users share their thoughts on the information presented and discussed among themselves.
