Abstract

The article is devoted to studying the functional aspect of folk aphorisms about silence in the Russian, English and German languages. The authors identify the following functions of silence in proverbs and sayings: axiological, prescriptive, constative, informative, emotive ones. The study aims to reveal common and specific features of the silence phenomenon in the Russian, English and German linguistic worldviews. The research findings allow concluding that silence is a multifunctional phenomenon that acquires different interpretations in the analysed linguo-cultures.
