Abstract

The article serves as an introduction to the present special issue devoted to Viktor Zhirmunskii. Zhirmunskiiʼs work in the field of philology, especially his study of German Romanticism, is considered with regard, first, to his criticism of the Formal method and second, in view of the central place of the epic/mythopoetic in Zhirmunskiiʼs conception of culture. The main context discussed here is Nietzscheʼs philosophy of the Apollinian and Dionysian principles. Finally, the author briefly introduces the contributions to the present issue.
