Abstract

In modern curricula the teaching of reading and writing is central. A key position in the New Curriculum of preschool education is the term emerging literacy through which the knowledge and skills about literacy that each child acquires from birth until he begins to be taught to read and write in a conventional way. The purpose of the research was to investigate the perceptions and practices of kindergarten teachers in the prefecture of Magnesia regarding the development of literacy and to highlight whether their practices are in line with the New Curriculum. The results showed that kindergarten teachers recognize the importance and necessity of planning and implementing activities in the context of emerging literacy and consequently, through the activities they plan seek to enrich the literacy experiences of all students without exception.
