First identification of the Early Cretaceous Suolong Cu-rich porphyry in the Geji area, central Tibet: A new clue for regional porphyry Cu exploration

The Tibetan Plateau hosts the majority of porphyry Cu deposits in China. There are two large metallogenic belts, the Gangdese and Bangong-Nujiang belts, in the Lhasa Terrane, Central Tibet. The Lhasa Terrane experienced multistage magmatic activity from the Mesozoic to Cenozoic, and the subaerial volcanic areas of the western part of the terrane are regarded as favorable targets of porphyry Cu deposits. In this paper, we describe the geology of our newly identified Early Cretaceous Suolong Cu-rich porphyry in the western Lhasa Terrane and present new U–Pb ages, trace element and Hf isotopic compositions of zircon and whole-rock elemental and Sr–Nd isotopic compositions. The Suolong porphyry contains zircon grains with ages ranging from 136 to 135 Ma, εHf(t) values ranging from −1.5 ∼ +2.7 and logfO2 values ranging from −16.27 ∼ −9.92. Geochemically, the porphyry rocks are peraluminous in nature, with whole-rock εNd(t) values of −5.7 ∼ −5.4. We infer that the Suolong porphyry originated from a mixture of ∼53 % enriched lithospheric mantle and ∼47 % ancient lower crustal melt, triggered by the roll-back of the northward-subducting Neo-Tethyan Ocean. The conditions of high oxygen fugacity and water content and tectonic transition promoted the formation of the Suolong Cu-rich porphyry, but the condition of a thinned crust may have constrained the mineralization scale of the Cu deposits. This new identification of Early Cretaceous mineralization event provides important clues for identifying new potential exploration targets for porphyry Cu deposits in the western segment of the Lhasa Terrane.

Distinct mafic magmatism of the northeastern Longgang Block: Evidence for coexisting mantle plume and subduction during the Neoarchean North China Craton

The question of which specific tectonic regimes played an essential role in shaping the Neoarchean evolution of the North China Craton (NCC) has been a contentious and controversial topic. Mafic rocks, containing valuable geochemical information from the mantle and deep crust, serve as an important source of data to provide essential constraints on above issue. This study presents bulk-rock geochemistry, zircon U-Pb geochronology and Hf-Nd isotopes for the Neoarchean mafic rocks in the core area of the Longgang Block of the NCC. Petrographically, these mafic rocks are composed of the amphibolite and metadiabase. Zircon U-Pb dating results revealed that they were synchronously emplaced at ca. 2.5 Ga. Geochemically, the amphibolites belong to subalkaline tholeiite series, exhibiting enrichment in light rare earth elements (LREEs), intensely negative Nb, Ta and Ti anomalies, and slightly enriched Nd and relatively variable zircon Hf isotopic compositions. These geochemical and isotopic features show large affinity to arc-like magmatism, implying that they were derived from subduction-related metasomatized lithospheric mantle. In contrast, the metadiabases exhibit high-Ti alkaline basalt affinities, OIB-like REE, and trace element patterns. They also show clearly positive Nb, Ta and Ti anomalies, indicating that they originated from a mantle plume-related tectonic environment. The new geochemical and isotopic data reveal that these Neoarchean mafic rocks could have resulted from coexisting mantle plume and subduction processes. Combined with available regional structural, geochemical, and metamorphic data, it is likely that during the Neoarchean, both a mantle plume and subduction jointly controlled the crustal growth and tectonic evolution of the Longgang Block in the eastern NCC.

Platinum-Group Element Geochemistry of Igneous Rocks in the Chongjiang Cu–Mo–Au Deposit, Southern Tibet: Implications for the Formation of Post-Collisional Porphyry Cu Deposits

Abstract The timing and extent of sulfide saturation have been suggested as controlling factors in the formation of economically significant porphyry Cu deposits in subduction zone settings. However, details on the sulfide saturation history in post-collisional porphyry systems remain ambiguous. Accordingly, we have characterized the whole-rock geochemistry, including platinum-group elements (PGE), of igneous intrusions in the post-collisional Chongjiang porphyry Cu–Mo–Au deposit (southern Tibet) and utilize this data in conjunction with zircon U–Pb geochronological results and sulfide chemistry to assess the timing of sulfide saturation, the nature and amount of magmatic sulfide produced. The Chongjiang intrusions (monzogranite, biotite monzogranite porphyry, granodiorite, dacite porphyry, and quartz diorite porphyry) and mafic microgranular enclaves (MMEs) have zircon U–Pb ages of 14.2 to 12.8 Ma. Covariations in whole-rock major and trace elements among the Chongjiang intrusions and MMEs, together with similarities in their Sr–Nd and zircon Hf isotope compositions, indicate that they are co-magmatic and crystallized from a juvenile lower crustal melt that mixed with mafic melt derived from the lithospheric mantle; this hybrid melt subsequently evolved via fractional crystallization. Trace-element ratios in zircon and temperature − ∆FMQ estimates of the different intrusions suggest that they all crystallized from oxidized (average ∆FMQ = 1.9–2.6) and water-rich magmas. Palladium contents and Pd/Pt ratios in the Chongjiang igneous intrusions increase with decreasing MgO up to 3.9 wt % MgO, after which they abruptly decrease. The initial increase in Pd/Pt ratios likely results from the fractionation of a Pt-rich mineral (e.g. Pt–Fe alloy). The decrease in Pd contents and Pd/Pt ratios at 3.9 wt % MgO likely results from sulfide saturation during magma evolution, but prior to volatile exsolution, which occurred at approximately 1.4 to 2.4 wt % MgO. The presence of magmatic sulfide inclusions in amphibole and magnetite in samples with 3.9 wt % MgO, and the geochemical compositions of sulfide inclusions suggest that they represented trapped sulfide liquid and intermediate solid solution. Results of Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate that 0.003 to 0.009 wt % magmatic sulfide is required to have fractionated from the magma to explain the decrease in Pd contents at 3.9 wt % MgO. Highly chalcophile elements, such as Pd, will be sequestered by the magmatic sulfide that saturates at depth, decreasing their concentrations in the residual silicate melt, whereas concentrations of the less chalcophile elements, such as Cu, Mo, and even Au, will not be as significantly affected. Consequently, sufficient concentrations of Cu–Mo–Au will remain in the residual melt and, upon reaching volatile saturation, can be transported by the vapor phase to form porphyry Cu–Mo–Au deposits. In the case of the Chongjiang deposit, sulfide saturation was likely triggered by the high pressures and/or depletion of FeO caused by the thick (~70 km) crust beneath the Gangdese belt. This contribution presents evidence of sulfide saturation in post-collisional magmatic systems, and demonstrates that the amount of magmatic sulfide produced is a critical factor in controlling the formation of post-collisional porphyry Cu deposits.

Petrogenesis of Jurassic granitic rocks in South China Block: Implications for events related to subduction of Paleo-Pacific plate

Abstract Frequent magmatic intrusion and eruption during the early Yanshanian in South China formed a unique and diverse igneous rock assemblage, mainly comprising granite, rhyolite, and some basic rocks. Nevertheless, the tectonic regime responsible for the formation of these granitic rocks remains controversial. The comprehensive available data suggest that the Jurassic granitic rocks formed during the period from 180 to 145 Ma, with an age peak at ca. 160 Ma. Jurassic rocks are predominantly concentrated in Wuyi, southern Hunan, northeast Guangdong, and southern Jiangxi, followed by the eastern Guangxi-western Guangdong areas, mainly including I-, S-, and A-type granites, and a few I–S transformation-type granites. These granitic rocks invariably exhibit enrichment in Rb, Th, U, and Pb, while Ba, Nb, Sr, P, and Ti are depleted, and variable Eu/Eu* ratios. The whole-rock Sr–Nd isotopic and zircon Hf isotopic compositions show that the Jurassic granitic rocks are mainly recirculation products of Paleo-Mesoproterozoic rocks, as well as the mantle-derived magma, which played a major role in the formation process. Among them, the granites in eastern Guangxi-western Guangdong and Northeast Guangdong areas display higher ε Nd(t) and ε Hf(t) values, suggesting a relatively larger contribution from mantle-derived materials. Based on the comprehensive regional geological data, we interpret that these Jurassic granitic rocks as a product of lithosphere extensional-thinning, tectonic-magmatic interaction formed during the process of flat-slab subduction.

Geodynamics and nature of the basement of the northern Lhasa Terrane: Insights from Early Cretaceous highly fractionated I-type granites in the Beila and Dongga areas, central Tibetan Plateau

Collisional orogenic belts serve as excellent places for investigating geodynamic process and growth mechanism of the continental crust. As one of the largest collisional orogenic belts worldwide, the Tibetan Plateau is formed by the amalgamation of multiple tectonic terranes. However, the nature and composition of the crustal basement beneath the northern Lhasa Terrane, located in central Tibetan Plateau, is still a matter of debate. Here, we investigated a series of Early Cretaceous granites in the Beila and Dongga areas, northern Lhasa Terrane. Zircon U-Pb dating reveals that the Beila and Dongga granites were emplaced at ca. 118 Ma and 110 Ma, respectively. These granites are characterized by high SiO2 and K2O, low TiO2 and P2O5 contents and low Mg#. They exhibit enrichment in light rare earth elements, significant negative Eu anomalies, and depletion in Ba and Sr. These geochemical features suggest that they belong to highly fractionated I-type granites. Both the Beila and Dongga granites display similar and enriched whole-rock Sr-Nd and zircon Hf isotope compositions, implying a likely common ancient crustal origin. Given the temporal sequences and redox conditions during their formation, it is highly probable that the Beila and Dongga granites formed during the syn-collision stage between the Lhasa and Qiangtang Terranes and the breakoff of the Bangong-Nujiang oceanic slab, respectively. Integrated with coeval magmatism in the central Tibetan Plateau, our new data reveal the presence of a regionally preserved ancient basement beneath the northern Lhasa Terrane, analogous to the equivalent basement beneath the central Lhasa Terrane.

Copper skarn mineralization related to reduced monzodioritic magma at the Huanren deposit, northeastern China

Most known copper (Cu) skarns are associated with oxidized intrusions. In this contribution, we report a Cu skarn associated with a reduced monzodioritic intrusion at Huanren, northeastern China, which contains 0.41 Mt of Cu accompanied by economic concentrations of Zn, Pb, Fe, Mo, and Ag. Copper-polymetallic mineralization in the Huanren deposit is concentrated in skarns located between the contacts of the monzodiorite (SiO2 = 52−55 wt%) and the Cambrian carbonate rocks, with minor molybdenite-bearing veinlets/veins and dissimilated chalcopyrite mineralization hosted within the monzodiorite. Laser ablation−inductively coupled plasma−mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) U-Pb zircon geochronology indicates the monzodiorite crystallized at 125.4 ± 0.6 Ma (2σ). Isotope dilution (ID)-ICP-MS Re-Os molybdenite geochronology indicates mineralization at Huanren occurred at 125.3 ± 0.8 Ma (2σ). Whole-rock major- and trace-element and zircon Hf isotopic compositions suggest enriched (subduction metasomatized) lithospheric mantle−derived sources for the parental magma of the monzodiorite without significant crustal assimilation. Zircon trace-element and magmatic apatite major-element compositions indicate the reduced nature of the monzodiorite, as evidenced by low magmatic oxygen fugacity (fayalite-magnetite-quartz [FMQ] buffer = −1.09 ± 0.19) and negligible apatite SO3 contents (<0.05 wt%). A reduced magmatic-hydrothermal system at Huanren is also supported by the predominance of magmatic ilmenite over magnetite in the monzodiorite and by the presence of pyrrhotite and the absence of anhydrite and hematite in the ore. Chalcopyrite from the Huanren deposit has an average δ34S value of 4.34‰ ± 0.88‰ (1σ), which is clearly higher than values from most porphyry-skarn Cu ± Mo ± Au deposits. Accordingly, we suggest that interaction between (1) external oxidized fluids equilibrated with evaporites and (2) reduced Cl-bearing magmas and related exsolved fluids may have played a critical role in the formation of the Huanren Cu skarn by increasing the ability of fluids to scavenge Cu from the reduced magma and subsequently precipitate Cu in the carbonate rocks. This study defines a new type of Cu skarn and thereby opens new potential for Cu skarn exploration proximal to intrusive units previously deemed too reduced to be Cu fertile, especially in non-arc settings. Moreover, we conclude that the availability of Cl and S in magmatic-hydrothermal systems may be as critical as fO2 in facilitating the actual ore-forming event in Cu skarn systems.

Petrogenesis of high heat producing granites and their contribution to geothermal resource in the Huangshadong geothermal field, South China

The Huangshadong geothermal field (HGF), situated in the contact zone between Mesozoic granites and NE-striking dominant faults in South China, has great geothermal potential. Petrogenesis of reservoir rock plays an important role in understandings its genetic mechanism and assessing geothermal potential. However, due to the lack of rock sample at depth collected from the geothermal reservoir, the petrogenesis of granites in the geothermal reservoirs of the HGF, remains an enigma. This study elucidated the petrogenetic characteristics of these granites sampled directly from geothermal reservoir at the depth of ∼3,000 km and their geothermal implications through zircon U-Pb dating, geochemical analysis, and Hf isotopic analysis. The zircon U-Pb ages indicate that the magmatism evolution of HGF contains three eras, namely, Cretaceous (135 ± 4 to 143.6 ± 2.8 Ma), Jurassic (152.7 ± 2.7 to 176.7 ± 1.8 Ma), and Permian granites (251 ± 9.1 to 251 ± 5 Ma) from the youngest to oldest. The reservoir granites were emplaced during the latest stage of Cretaceous intrusion, as indicated by the zircon U-Pb ages (135 ± 4 Ma and 135.3 ± 2.4 Ma) of rock samples from the deep part of well HR-1. These Cretaceous rocks are highly fractionated I-type granites, featuring high SiO2, K2O, and Na2O contents, high Rb/Sr ratios, low Zr/Hf, Nb/Ta, and Th/U ratios, and A/CNK values of 1.05–1.13. Compared to other Cretaceous granites outcropping on the margin of the HGF, these granites have undergone the strongest fractional differentiation. The Cretaceous granites in the HGF are high-heat-producing rocks (>5 μW/m3), with an average heat production rate of 6.63 μW/m3. Notably, the Cretaceous reservoir granites (as reservoir rocks) serve as an important heat source for the formation of geothermal resources in the HGF. In addition, the zircon Hf isotopic composition indicates that the reservoir Cretaceous granites originated from Meso-to Paleo-Proterozoic lower crustal materials (TDM2: 1,385 to 1907 Ma).

Late Tonian (ca. 780–750 Ma) bimodal magmatism in the Ogcheon Metamorphic Belt, Korea, at the eastern margin of North China Craton

Neoproterozoic rift-related rocks of the North China Craton (NCC), including the Korean Peninsula, provide crucial information for global supercontinent reconstruction during the Rodinia breakup and Gondwana assembly. Here, we report not only zircon and baddeleyite U-Pb ages but also zircon Hf isotopic and bulk rock compositions of amphibolites in the Ogcheon Metamorphic Belt (OMB), Korea. Zircon occurs as either primary phase or secondary one replacing igneous baddeleyite. Primary zircons analyzed from three amphibolites yielded the weighted mean 206Pb/238U ages of 755 ± 5 Ma (n = 19), 772 ± 3 Ma (n = 9), and 779 ± 13 Ma (n = 12), respectively; this result is corroborated by the baddeleyite age of ∼760–745 Ma. Secondary zircons define discordia lines with lower intercepts corresponding to the Jurassic or Cretaceous age of granites emplaced adjacent to the amphibolite. In conjunction with the occurrence of coeval (ca. 762–745 Ma) metatrachytes, our result suggests that late Tonian bimodal magmatism has lasted for ∼30 m.yr. in the OMB. Moreover, positive εHf(t) values (4.9–21.4) of zircon in amphibolites indicate a depleted mantle source of mafic magma, whereas trace element compositions attest to an intraplate setting for the crystallization. A compilation of Nb-Th and Zr–Zr/Y data suggests that the intraplate setting is also pertinent to ca. 950–750 Ma mafic rocks from the Gyeonggi Marginal Belt, Korea, as well as the NCC. Such a tectonomagmatic correlation is corroborated by detrital zircon age spectra of metasedimentary rocks in the OMB equivalent to those of early Tonian rocks in the NCC. In marked contrast to tectonic scenarios conjecturing a linkage between the OMB and the Nanhua rift, South China Craton (SCC), we conclude that the Ogcheon Belt provides rare geologic-geochronologic evidence for late Tonian breakup of the Rodinia supercontinent at the eastern NCC margin.

Early Triassic S-Type Granitoids in the Qinzhou Bay Area, South China: Petrogenesis and Tectonic Implications

The influence of the paleo-Tethys or paleo-Pacific oceanic plate subduction on Early Triassic South China has long been debated. We have studied the zircon U-Th-Hf isotopes, trace elements, and whole-rock geochemistry of Early Triassic peraluminous granitoids in the Qinzhou Bay area, South China Block. LA–ICP–MS zircon U–Pb dating has revealed the Jiuzhou granodiorites and Dasi-Taima granite porphyries formed between 248.32 ± 0.98 and 246.6 ± 1.1 Ma. These rocks are characterized by high K2O and Al2O3, and low MgO, CaO, and P2O5 contents with A/CNK = 1.06–1.17, showing high-K calc-alkaline S-type affinities. The Early Triassic intrusive rocks and adjacent silicic volcanic rocks in the Qinzhou Bay area were found to be comagmatic and derived from a common magma pool, detached in an undifferentiated melt instead of indicating remarkable crystal—melt separation. Although the analyzed granitoids have highly enriched zircon Hf isotopic compositions (εHf(t) = −23.9 to −7.8), they cannot originate solely from metasedimentary protoliths. Source discrimination indicators have revealed enriched lithospheric mantle-derived magma was also an endmember component of the S-type silicic magma, which provided a heat source for the crustal anatectic melting as well. We inferred the studied Early Triassic granitoids formed under the paleo-Tethys tectonic regime before the collision of South China and Indochina blocks, as the oceanic plate subduction would have created an extensional setting which further caused the mantle-derived upwelling and volcanic eruption.

Early Paleozoic tectonic affinity of the Lesser Xing'an–Zhangguangcai Range, NE China: A continental arc along the western margin of the Jiamusi Block

The Lesser Xing'an–Zhangguangcai Range (LXZGCR) in NE China was traditionally interpreted to be the eastern part of the Songliao–Xilinhot Accretionary Terrane, separated from the Jiamusi–Khanka Block to the east by the Heilongjiang Complex. However, recent studies have shown that the Heilongjiang Complex formed in the late Paleozoic–early Mesozoic. Therefore, the tectonic affinity of the LXZGCR during the early Paleozoic remains unclear. To constrain this key issue, we present new zircon UPb ages, Hf isotopic compositions, and whole-rock geochemical data for early Paleozoic igneous rocks in the LXZGCR. The new ages, along with previously published data, suggest that the early Paleozoic magmatism in the LXZGCR can be divided into four stages: Middle–Late Cambrian (523–486 Ma), Early Ordovician (485–469 Ma), Late Ordovician (464–443 Ma), and Late Silurian (433–423 Ma). Middle–Late Cambrian igneous rocks are dominated by calc-alkaline I-type granitoids and high-Mg andesite–dacite–rhyolite association. Early Ordovician igneous rocks consist of a suite of calc-alkaline diorites, granodiorites, monzogranites, alkali-feldspar granites, and rhyolites, with I-type affinities. Late Ordovician igneous rocks consist mainly of I-type granitoids with minor A-type granitoids and rhyolites. Late Silurian igneous rocks are composed of calc-alkaline I-type granitoids with minor dacites. The early Paleozoic granitoids and felsic volcanic rocks originated from partial melting of dominantly Paleoproterozoic–Mesoproterozoic lower crust, whereas the Late Cambrian high-Mg andesite–dacite–rhyolite association was probably derived from partial melting of a depleted mantle wedge metasomatized by subduction-related fluids. The rock associations and geochemical characteristics suggest that these early Paleozoic igneous rocks formed in active continental margin and back-arc extension settings. Comparing the early Paleozoic magmatism, zircon Hf isotopic compositions, Nd model ages, and Precambrian basement features of the LXZGCR and the Jiamusi Block suggest that the LXZGCR was part of the same tectonic unit as the Jiamusi Block during the early Paleozoic. We argue that the formation of the early Paleozoic igneous rocks in the LXZGCR was related to the eastward subduction of a branch ocean of the Paleo-Asian Ocean beneath the Jiamusi–Khanka Block.

Petrogenesis of the early Permian Hongliujing granite complex in the Chinese Eastern Tianshan orogen: Evidence for crustal growth in the Central Tianshan microcontinent

The generation and modification of silicic magma systems are essential processes in resolving the differentiation of continental crust. This understanding motivated the geochronological and geochemical study of the early Permian Hongliujing granite complex, consisting of quartz monzonite, granite, and leucogranite in the Central Tianshan microcontinent of the southern Central Asian Orogenic Belt. Laser ablation−inductively coupled plasma−mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) zircon U-Pb dating of the Hongliujing complex rock units revealed almost identical ages (279 ± 2 Ma to 270 ± 2 Ma). The high-silica leucogranite and granite are characterized by positive Rb and negative Eu anomalies and Ba, Sr, P, and Ti depletions. The zircon trace elements are characterized by relatively low Ti and Th/U and high Yb/Gd. In contrast, the quartz monzonite and its mafic microgranular enclaves display minor negative Ba, Sr, P, Ti, and Eu anomalies, while the zircon trace elements are characterized by relatively high Ti and Th/U and low Yb/Gd. The complex has similar zircon Hf and whole-rock Nd isotopic compositions, with Hf and Nd model ages younger than 1.4 Ga, suggesting that their magmas were derived from an isotopically depleted mantle, with some contributions from crustal melts. The leucogranites further showed relatively large variations of εHf(t) and lower εNd(t) values, implying that their magma was affected by higher amounts of crustal contamination. We suggest that crystal-melt segregation was the major mechanism responsible for the evolution of the magmatic system, and that the early Permian magmatism represents a crust-forming episode triggered by slab rollback of the subducting South Tianshan oceanic plate beneath the eastern Central Tianshan microcontinent. Thus, our study reveals that microcontinents with Precambrian crustal basement were major sites of juvenile continental growth during the accretionary evolution of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt.

Early Triassic Silicic Volcanic Rocks of South China: Petrogenesis and Constraints on the Geodynamic Evolution of the Paleo‐Tethys Ocean Region

AbstractThe only occurrence of early Triassic silicic volcanic rocks within the South China Block is in the Qinzhou Bay area of Guangxi Province. LA–ICP–MS zircon U–Pb dating reveals that volcanic rocks of the Beisi and Banba Fms. formed between 248.8 ± 1.6 and 246.5 ± 1.3 Ma, coeval with peraluminous granites of the Qinzhou Bay Granitic Complex. The studied rhyolites and dacites are characterized by high SiO2, K2O, and Al2O3, and low MgO, CaO, and P2O5 contents and are classified as high‐K calc‐alkaline S‐type rocks, with A/CNK = 0.98–1.19. The volcanic rocks are depleted in high field strength elements (e.g., Nb, Ta, Ti, and P) and enriched in large ion lithophile elements (e.g., Rb, K, Sr, and Ba). Although the analyzed volcanic rocks have extremely enriched zircon Hf isotopic compositions (ɛHf(t) = −29.1 to −6.9), source discrimination indicators and high calculated Ti‐in‐zircon temperatures (798–835°C) reveal that magma derived from enriched lithospheric mantle not only provided a heat source for anatectic melting of the metasedimentary protoliths but was also an endmember component of the S‐type silicic magma. The studied early Triassic volcanic rocks are inferred to have formed immediately before closure of the paleo‐Tethys Ocean, as the associated subduction would have generated an extensional setting in which the mantle‐derived upwelling and volcanic activity occurred.

Late Jurassic Haobugao granites from the southern Great Xing’an Range, NE China: Implications for postcollision extension of the Mongol–Okhotsk Ocean

Abstract The Mongolia-Okhotsk tectonic regime had a significant impact on the tectonic evolution of Northeastern (NE) China. However, there is no consensus on the role of this regime in the geological evolution of the Xing’an Massif during the late Mesozoic. This article presents the results of zircon U–Pb geochronology, whole-rock major and trace-element geochemistry, and zircon Hf isotopic compositions for granites in the Haobugao area of the southern Great Xing’an Range, NE China, to determine their petrogenesis, source, and tectonic setting. The zircon U–Pb ages indicate that the granites crystallized at 152.7 ± 0.5 Ma. The granites exhibit high SiO2 (70.75–73.19 wt%) and K2O + Na2O (8.00–8.65 wt%) contents and extremely low MgO (0.40–0.59 wt%) and TiO2 (0.24–0.33 wt%) contents. They belong to the metaluminous, high-K calc-alkaline, and ferroan series, with mostly right-inclined REE curves, flat heavy rare earth element patterns, high 10,000 Ga/Al ratios, and intensely negative Eu anomalies. The Zr/Hf ratios are 24.2–27.7, Nb/Ta ratios are 6.4–8.9, and Y/NbN ratios are >1.2. These characteristics suggest an A2-type granite affinity. The zircon εHf values of the rocks range from +5.62 to +9.12, corresponding to T DM2 values of 621–906 Ma, indicating that juvenile materials in the Neoproterozoic may be a source of these granites. Geochemically, these Late Jurassic A2-type granites are similar to those from post-collision extension settings. The primary magma was likely derived from the partial melting of a delaminated region of the lower crust.

Detrital zircons of the vast Triassic Snadd and De Geerdalen formations, Barents Shelf, reveal temporal changes in sediment source

Studies of detrital-zircon age distributions from Triassic sedimentary rock successions on the Arctic Barents Shelf have resulted in different provenance interpretations. Here, we provide new U–Pb/Hf detrital-zircon data from eleven samples of the Snadd and De Geerdalen formations, covering the Barents Shelf in a north–south transect, that help refine the provenance of these sedimentary rocks and show how stratigraphic variations reflect changing source regions. The sample locations cover different stratigraphic levels and geographic locations within the formations. The detrital-zircon age spectra in the lower part (lowest Ladinian and lower Carnian) are dominated by two age peaks at 300 and 540 Ma, whereas the zircon distributions in the stratigraphically younger deposits (latest Carnian and early Norian) are dominated by a 235 Ma age peak and two minor peaks at 300 and 425 Ma. The apparent relative contribution of detritus of different ages changes gradually from lower to higher stratigraphic levels, marked by an increase in both the 235 and 425 Ma age peaks, a decrease in the 300 Ma component and a progressive loss of the 540 Ma age peak. The zircon Hf-isotopic compositions display predominantly juvenile zircon populations, except for a mixed juvenile and evolved signature in the youngest Permo-Triassic grains. A regional comparison of detrital-zircon age spectra in latest Carnian/early Norian deposits extends the depositional system into the Sverdrup Basin, supporting a much larger depositional system than hitherto known. The gradual change in detrital-zircon age spectra likely represents a gradual shift in zircon provenance. We interpret these variations to reflect an early source region in the north Urals, gradually changing to a dominant source region in the Taimyr Peninsula region.

New evidence for the presence of the Inner Tauride Ocean: Lithological, geochronological and P-T correlations with the Tavşanlı and Afyon zones of Central Anatolia (Türkiye)

The Tavşanlı and Afyon zones, which are well defined in western Türkiye, represent high pressure-low temperature (HP-LT) metamorphic rocks formed in a subduction zone. The Korumaz and Hınzır mountains (northeast of Kayseri) between the Central Anatolian Crystalline Complex and the Eastern Tauride Belt are represented by a HP-LT metamorphic sequence, which is thought to have formed between the Carboniferous and the Cretaceous. Here we present 40Ar/39Ar data from white micas within the Lower-Middle Triassic calc-phyllites from Korumaz Mountain, which yielded an age of 87 ± 2 Ma. Therefore, based on new mineralogical and geochronological data we suggest that this low-grade (HP-LT) metasedimentary sequence correlates with the Afyon Zone. Tectonically emplaced on-top of the HP-LT metasedimentary units of the Korumaz and Hınzır mountains is a meta-accretionary complex consisting of serpentinite, listvenite, marble, phyllite, calc-phyllite, metabasite, and meta-plagiogranite. Petrographic and mineral chemical studies show that the meta-accretionary complex was subjected to metamorphism under the HP-LT conditions that are similar to those of the Tavşanlı Zone in western Türkiye. Zircon Hf isotopic compositions from the meta-plagiogranite in the Korumaz and Hınzır mountains exhibit a depleted mantle signature with positive epsilon Hf(t) values of +5.6 to +13.1, and yielded a U-Pb crystallization age of 101.14 ± 0.84 Ma, which is the oldest age determined in oceanic crustal rocks of the ophiolites from the Tauride Belt. Geochemically, the metabasites and meta-plagiogranites from the meta-accretionary complex show subduction-related characteristics. White micas from phyllites and listvenite, which dominate the matrix of the meta-accretionary complex, yielded 40Ar/39Ar metamorphic ages ranging from 78 to 60 Ma. Our new geological and geochronological data suggest that metamorphic units of the Korumaz and Hınzır mountains are the eastern continuation of the Afyon and Tavşanlı zones. This indicates that the Inner Tauride Ocean, the existence of which has been controversial in the literature, was indeed present between the Central Anatolian Crystalline Complex and the Eastern Tauride Belt.

Mid-Mesoproterozoic (ca. 1.37 Ga) anorogenic magmatism in the Dabie orogen, northern Yangtze Craton: Response to the breakup of Columbia

It is evident that the Yangtze Craton was involved in the formation and breakup of the Columbia supercontinent. However, due to the scarcity of Mesoproterozoic geological records and reliable paleomagnetic data, little is known about the timing, paleogeographic position, and geological processes of the Yangtze Craton. We conducted detailed geological mapping, petrographic, geochemical, and in situ zircon U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotopic investigations on newly recognized Mesoproterozoic quartz syenite and monzogranite in the Dabie orogen, northern Yangtze Craton. The results show that the quartz syenite and the monzogranite were emplaced at 1369 ± 12 Ma and 1372 ± 5 Ma, respectively. Both rocks are high in total alkali (K2O + Na2O) content and FeOt/(FeOt + MgO), with elevated diagnostic 10,000*Ga/Al ratios and Zr + Nb + Ce + Y concentrations, and enrichment in light rare earth elements. They are also depleted in heavy rare earth elements with significant negative Eu anomalies but remarkably low Sr, Cr, and Ni contents. These compositions define affinity to A1-type granite. In addition, the quartz syenite displays variable zircon Hf and homogeneous whole-rock Nd isotopic compositions with positive εHf(t) values of +0.7 to +5.7 (average +2.4) and εNd(t) values of −0.1 to +2.5 (average +1.0). In contrast, the monzogranite has homogeneous zircon Hf and whole-rock Nd isotopic compositions with negative εHf(t) values of −5.7 to −2.6 (average −4.8) and εNd(t) values of −3.5 to −1.5 (average −2.2). We propose that the quartz syenite was likely generated by the partial melting of juvenile, crust-derived melt with involvement of minor mantle-derived material, while the monzogranite was likely derived from the partial melting of ancient crust in an extensional tectonic regime (e.g., continental rift). Based on the newly recognized ca. 1.37 Ga granitic magmatism and previously reported magmatic events, we argue that the mid-Mesoproterozoic (ca. 1.37 Ga) magmatism in the Yangtze Craton occurred in response to the breakup of Columbia, and represents the separation of the Yangtze Craton from Columbia. Furthermore, according to comparable magmatic and sedimentary events, we propose that the Yangtze Craton, along with central Hainan Island, may have been linked to northwestern Laurentia, southwestern Siberia, and northeastern Australia during 1.6−1.4 Ga.

Building and reworking of Archean continental crust in the nucleus of the Yangtze Craton: Constraint from 3.4 Ga and 2.94 Ga granitoid gneisses in the Southern Kongling Complex

The TTG gneisses, a dominant lithological assemblage within Archean cratonic provinces, provide a window into the early evolution of the continental crust. The Kongling complex in South China preserves voluminous Archean granitoids, recording the early formation and evolution history of the Yangtze Craton. We present results of a comprehensive study involving field investigation, petrographic characterization, zircon U–Pb geochronology and Lu-Hf isotope tracing, and whole-rock geochemistry for the Archean granitoid gneisses from the Southern Kongling Complex. Igneous zircons from two granitic gneisses yielded weighted mean 207Pb/206Pb ages of 3399 ± 15 Ma (MSWD = 0.99, n = 24) and 3389 ± 12 Ma (MSWD = 1.02, n = 20). Zircons from the 3.4 Ga granitic gneiss also record a ca.3.0 Ga anatexis event which is contemporaneous with the widespread granitoid gneisses in the Kongling Complex. Geochemical and zircon Hf isotope data (εHf(t) values of − 3.41 to + 0.77 and two-stage Hf model ages of 3.65–3.80 Ga) for the granitic gneisses support a derivation from pre-existing Eoarchean (TDM2 = 3.73 Ga) crust. LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb dating yielded emplacement ages of 2948 ± 17 Ma for a migmatized trondhjemitic gneiss, and 2928 ± 14 Ma for a quartz monzonite gneiss. These two gneisses have similar zircon Hf model ages (TDM2 = 3.45 Ga) and both were emplaced during a major phase of mafic magma diapiric process that significantly reworked the old crust. The occurrences of 2.94 Ga trondhjemite and associated mafic blocks suggest intra-crustal differentiation by partial melting of low-K mafic rocks. We suggest that intra-crustal remelting and differentiation played a key role in the formation, evolution, and maturation of the micro-continents in Kongling during the Paleo- to Meso-Archean. The whole-rock geochemical and zircon Hf isotopic compositions of the different generations of granitoid gneisses from the Southern Kongling Complex are similar to those of the coeval gneisses (3.45 Ga and 2.95 Ga) from the northern part of the Kongling Complex, indicating a common tectono-magmatic history shared by both segments tracing back to as early as 3.4 Ga. The Archean granitoid gneisses from the Kongling Complex record remelting and differentiation of Eo- to Paleo-Archean crusts during the Paleo- to Meso-Archean, implying that Eoarchean crust is likely to have been preserved within the Kongling complex.

Zircon Hf isotopic compositions of the basement gneiss in Bayan Obo: Constraints on crustal evolution of the Yinshan Block in the North China Craton

Bayan Obo, located in the north margin of the Yinshan Block, North China Craton (NCC), contains the Archean to Paleoproterozoic basement rocks which may shed light on the early crustal evolution of the NCC. In this paper, to reveal the formation and modification of the basements, we report Hf isotope of zircons from the biotite plagiogneisses in Bayan Obo. Combined with the published U–Pb ages and Hf isotope compositions of the zircons from the Bayan Obo basement rocks, a comprehensive review was employed to provide new insights into the formation and modification of the basement in this area. The oldest formation age of the basement rocks was found to be approximately 2.6 Ga, with positive εHf(t) values indicating the contribution from the depleted mantle to the rocks. The age of ∼2.0 Ga marks the major formation period of the basement rocks. The varied εHf(t) values (−17.2 to +8.9) of the magmatic zircons suggest a mixture origin between the depleted mantle and crustal rocks for the gneiss. The basement went through extensive metamorphism during 1.95–1.9 Ga. In addition, zircon U–Pb–Hf isotope data of the Precambrian units in Guyang and Wuchuan, which are adjacent to Bayan Obo, were compiled for comparison. The comprehensive review on the data of the concordant magmatic zircons indicates the existence of 3.5 Ga crustal fragments in the Yinshan Block. The melting of the depleted mantle and the addition of juvenile materials into the crust at 2.6–2.9 Ga and 2.45–2.55 Ga were confirmed by the high positive εHf(t) values of the magmatic and inherited zircons. An increase in remelting of the crust at 2.0 Ga is deduced from the extremely unradiogenic Hf isotope of the magmatic zircons.

Strongly Peraluminous Highly Fractionated I-Type Granite from Bangong–Nujiang Metallogenic Belt, Tibet: Implications for Continental Evolution and Evaluation of Economic Potentiality

The research on highly fractionated granite has significant implications for both the evolution and compositional maturation of the continental crust and metallogenic exploration. As a means of further understanding crustal evolution and promoting ore exploration in the Bangong–Nujiang metallogenic belt (BNMB), we present the petrography, zircon LA–ICP–MS U–Pb age, and Hf isotopic data, along with the whole-rock geochemical and Sr–Nd isotopic composition on Kese highly fractionated granite in the Baingoin area within the BNMB, central Tibet. The results show that Kese granite possesses a zircon U–Pb age of 127.8 ± 1.7 Ma and a relative enrichment in zircon Hf isotopic composition (−12.8~+0.3) with a two-stage Hf model age of 1.2~2.0 Ga. This granite belongs to the high-K calc-alkaline series, characterized by a strongly peraluminous feature, and is enriched in large-ion lithophile elements (LILEs) and Nd isotopes (−7.86~−7.74). The granite was likely to have been derived from the mixed melts derived from 40%~45% juvenile basaltic lower crust, 15%~20% ancient lower, and 40% middle–upper, following intense fractional crystallization processes involving amphibole, biotite, plagioclase, and some accessory minerals during the magma’s evolution. We infer that Kese highly fractionated granite can be formed from the continental collision of the Lhasa–Qiangtang terranes initiated before 128 Ma. The reworking of pre-existing juvenile and ancient crustal materials drove the composition of the northern Lhasa terrane to that of a mature continental crust. Moreover, the distinctive geochemical features have shown that the high degree of differentiation led to intense magmatic–hydrothermal interaction during the formation of Kese granite. A comparison of the geochemical characteristics of mineralized and barren granites suggests that the highly fractionated granites in Baingoin from the BNMB have a high economic potential and are suitable for preliminary exploration of Sn–W-(U) deposits.

Development of a back-arc basin from initial rifting to seafloor spreading: Constraints from Paleozoic basic rocks in the North Qinling accretionary orogen, central China

The progression from initial back-arc rifting to back-arc opening in ancient orogenic collages is important for reconstructing subduction histories, constraining tectonic switching, and understanding crustal growth and evolution. However, it is difficult to constrain this transition in ancient arcs. The Qinling-Dabie orogenic belt is one of the most important orogenic belts in eastern Asia, yet the history of Paleozoic accretionary processes in this belt remains equivocal, owing to a poor understanding of back-arc opening processes in the Erlangping unit. In this study, we present whole-rock geochemical analyses of mafic dikes in the Erlangping unit, along with U-Pb ages and Hf-O isotope compositions of zircon from these dikes. Zircon secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) dating of these mafic dikes yielded U-Pb ages of 453 ± 3 Ma. The mafic dikes are calc-alkaline and are characterized by high K2O contents (1.16−3.16 wt%). They have enriched ([La/Yb]N = 4.3−14.9) light rare earth elements (REEs) and relatively flat heavy REE ([Dy/Yb]N = 0.9−1.5) patterns, and they exhibit enrichment in large ion lithophile elements (LILEs) but depletion in high field strength elements (HFSEs), resembling arc-like magmatism. These mafic dikes are characterized by relatively enriched initial 87Sr/86Sr (0.7049−0.7059), chondritic to slightly radiogenic εNd(t) (−0.36 to 1.33), and radiogenic whole-rock and zircon εHf(t) (+7.2−7.6 and +7.5−7.8, respectively). The zircons have δ18O values (5.0‰ ± 0.1‰) similar to those of normal mantle zircon. Accordingly, we interpret that the mafic dikes were derived from an enriched lithospheric mantle source metasomatized by subducted Proto-Tethys (Shangdan) ocean material. In contrast, previously reported ca. 440 Ma gabbros from the Erlangping unit are tholeiitic and have lower incompatible trace-element concentrations with less enrichment in LILEs and less depletion in HFSEs than the mafic dikes presented here. Whole-rock Nd and zircon Hf isotopic compositions suggest that these Silurian gabbros were derived from partial melting of a more depleted mantle with the involvement of asthenosphere, and they have a close geochemical affinity with back-arc basin basalts. In addition, trace-element ratios and geochemical modeling suggest higher melting pressures for the mafic dikes than the gabbros. The geochemical differences show systematic variations from island-arc basalt into back-arc basin basalt types, which is consistent with the magma source evolution of the Mariana Trough. Thus, we interpret that the ca. 454 Ma mafic dikes were emplaced when the infant arc split, and they record initial back-arc rifting in the Erlangping unit, whereas the Silurian gabbros subsequently formed during the opening of the back-arc basin. Our study provides a paradigm for deciphering the evolution of back-arc basins through the study of spatiotemporal geological and geochemical variations of mafic intrusions in ancient accretionary orogens.
