Toleration of ambiguity is demanded in the extreme for wrestling with issues at the borders of rationale suicide, physician-assisted suicide, and humane care. Where does compassionate management of individuals with terminal or severely life-restricting illness become assisting in suicide? James L. Werth, a research associate in the law and psychology program at the University of Nebraska, has created an interesting forum for experts from many disciplines with views pro and con on issues surrounding rational suicide.The presentation of opposing views begins with the book's two forewords. The first is by Derek Humphry, founder of the Hemlock Society, and the second is by Rita L. Marker, executive director of the International Anti-Euthanasia Task Force. These discussions set the pace and establish the format of subsequent chapters written from varying professional perspectives and by special-interest advocates.The first two chapters are contributed by philosopher-ethicists with opposing views: Margaret P. Battin, professor of philosophy at the University of Utah (pro), and Daniel Callahan, former president of the Hastings Center (con). Subsequent chapters juxtapose pro and con views of individuals of comparable stature and experience in the fields of religion, sociology, law, medicine, nursing, psychiatry, psychology, social work, gerontology, grief counseling, death education, and disability rights advocacy.The final two chapters are written by survivors with opposing views: Patty Rosen, a primary spokesperson for Oregon's Death With Dignity ballot measure (pro), and Adina Wrobleski, a recognized expert on suicide grief (con). Charlotte P. Ross, past executive director of the suicide prevention center of San Mateo County, California, and current executive director of the Death With Dignity National Center, supplies the concluding remarks. It is hard to conceive of a more illustrious group of contributors to provide material for meaningful consideration of the subject.Werth specifically distinguishes rational suicide from aid in dying, and he offers several different definitions of rational suicide. In essence, they seem to reflect Jerome Motto's criteria for a rational suicide: the act must be based on a realistic assessment of the person's life situation, and the degree of ambivalence about it must be minimal. Rational suicide could occur with or without the assistance of a physician.The ability to prolong life in the face of many terminal illnesses has led to public concern about the process of dying, the method of dying, and the degree to which a person may have control over how he or she lives and dies. Contemporary Perspectives on Rational Suicide raises many questions and provides some answers. In the end, however, any of us who have worked with patients know that the answers are never simple. We live and we die with personal histories and values, in a social context, amid political and economic realities. Intensity of pain and severity of disability alone do not determine the decision to live or to die. Organizing American dermatology and the founding of the American Academy of Dermatology

Born in the miasmatic mists of antiquity, growing up through centuries of complexity, and maturing in Europe, dermatology was brought to America in the early nineteenth century, and by the 1900s it became a vital part of the world's medical community. Fifty years ago American dermatologists formed an organization to bind the profession together through education and communication, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). Tyronic American dermatology began with Henry Bulkley in 1836/ who became the first American physician to study dermatology at the H6pital Saint-Louis in Paris before his return to New York to direct the Broome Street Infirmary for Diseases of the Skin. 2 He was the first to teach and practice dermatology in America? In 1869 with three colleagues, Bulkley founded and became President of the New York Dermatology Society, the first society dedicated to the study of skin diseases in the world? Dermatology was burgeoning in the United States, each year seemed to spawn new American dermatologic centers and masters and to see the publication of American treatises and textbooks about skin diseases, 5 but still most American dermatologists studied in Vienna, London, or Paris. In 1871 James White 6 was the first American professor of dermatology, an honor awarded by the prestigious Harvard Medical School. Henry Piffard 7 was the first to give postgraduate lectures in dermatology in 1875 at the New York University Medical College, and the opening of the New York Skin and Cancer Hospital in 1882, 3 and the development of formal dermatologic departments at medical centers in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Boston gave Americans the chance for dermatologic study at home. However, most training included European tutorials. Dermatology was a stepchild to organized medicine in the United States. Opportunities and funding for research were meager. Despite these impediments, dermatology forged ahead in the United States during the early twentieth century. The late 1920s brought changes to American medicine) Fleeing the Nazis and the instability of prewar Europe, thousands of scientists emigrated to the United States. Old World training, didacticism, skills, and energy, mixed with American ideals, tenacity, pragmatism, and occasional pugnation, began a renaissance in dermatology. Residency programs and American-trained dermatologists vaulted in quantity and quality. By early 1937 two national organizations represented dermatologists, the American Dermatological Association (ADA) and the American Medical Association (AMA). In 1876 six dermatologists sent letters proposing a national dermatologic society, and 16 men attended the organizational meeting at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia of the ADA. Twenty-nine of the approximately 50 dermatologists in America at that time joined the ADA. 9 The AMA was founded in 1847, and its Section on Dermatology and Syphilology was established in 1887 in Chicago. For decades after its beginning, the Section on Dermatology was a political arena, whose meetings were not attended by many of the extant dermatologic leaders and whose minutes were not even recorded. '~ In 1932 the ADA and the Section of Dermatology and Syphilology of the AMA cosponsored the formation of the American Board of Dermatology.

E. William Abramowitz, M.D. 1885-1949.

Dr. E. William Abramowitz died June 13, 1949, at his home after a lingering illness. He was 63 years old. At the time of his death he was clinical professor at the New York PostGraduate Medical School and Hospital of the New York University-Bellevue Medical Center. He had been connected with the former and its affiliate, the New York Skin and Cancer Hospital, since 1927. He was also attending dermatologist and syphilologist of the Israel-Zion Division of the Maimonides Hospital in Brooklyn and director of dermatology and syphilology at Gouverneur Hospital and the Jewish Memorial Hospital, New York city. Born in Jassy, Rumania, he was brought to New York as an infant. After studying engineering at Cooper Union he entered the New York University and Bellevue Medical College, from which he received his M.D. degree in 1907. He was an extern at Mount Sinai Hospital in 1908 and served as assistant house surgeon at the New York Lying-in Hospital that year and as house physician and surgeon at Har Moriah Hospital in 1909. In 1910 he began general practice in New York, and the following year he started to study diseases of the skin at Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was an assistant in the skin clinic for several years. In 1914 he joined the staff of the skin department of Vanderbilt Clinic, Columbia University, rising to the position of attending dermatologist. He was a member of the American Dermatological Association, a founder, past president and an honary member of the Brooklyn Dermatological Society, a former vice president of the Society for Investigative Dermatology, a former chairman of the skin section of the New York State Medical Society and a member of the New York County Medical Society and the American Medical Association. Dr. Abramowitz was a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine and a former chairman of its section on dermatology and syphilology. He was also a former chairman of the Manhattan Dermatological Society ; a member of the American Academy of Dermatology and Syphilology and a former corresponding member of the French Society of Dermatology. He was certified as a specialist by the American Board of Dermatology and Syphilology in 1933. He belonged to the Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity. He was the author of more than 50 papers on skin diseases and related subjects. He was an ardent teacher and investigator. He lectured on pharmacol¬ ogy and drug eruptions at the New York Post-Graduate Medical School, and his work on dermatitis medicamentosa survives as an outstanding contribution. Dr. Abramowitz was a very modest and quiet man, loyal and very likable. He made friends easily and retained them. Early in his medical career he cultivated music as a hobby, became an excellent violinist and for many years entertained his friends with performance of the classic works for this instrument.
