The paper presents the results of long-term, continuous observations of the Cherenkov light at the Yakutsk array. The Cherenkov light measurements allow one to reconstruct the longitudinal development of the shower, which is associated with both the model of hadron interactions and the mass composition of cosmic rays. The paper also provides a review of the results that are important for the physics of air showers and the astrophysics of cosmic rays, obtained over a long period of time at the Yakutsk array.
