Reconstructing AGN X-ray spectral parameter distributions with Bayesian methods

X-ray spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGN) consist of several different emission and absorption components. To determine the spectral parameters, these components are often fitted manually with models chosen on a case-by-case basis. However, this approach has two problems. First, it becomes very hard for a survey with a large number of sources. Second, when the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) is low, there is a tendency to adopt an overly simplistic model, biasing the parameters and making their uncertainties unrealistic. We developed a Bayesian method for automatically fitting AGN X-ray spectra obtained by XMM-Newton with a consistent and physically motivated model. Our model includes all spectral components, even when the data quality is low. We used a physical model for the X-ray background and an empirical model for the non-X-ray background. Noninformative priors were applied on the parameters of interest, the photon index (Γ) and the hydrogen column density (NH), while informative priors obtained from deep surveys were used to marginalize over the parameter space of the nuisance parameters. To improve speed, we developed a specific spectral extraction and fitting procedure. We tested this method using a realistic sample of 5000 spectra, which was simulated based on our source model, reproducing typical population properties. Spectral parameters were randomly drawn from the priors, taking the luminosity function into account. Well-constrained or meaningful posterior probability density distributions (PDFs) were obtained for the most relevant spectral parameters, for instance, NH, Γ, and LX, even at low S/N, but in this case, we were unable to constrain the parameters of secondary components such as the reflection and soft excess. As a comparison, a maximum-likelihood approach with model selection among six models of different complexities was also applied to this sample. We find clear failures in the measurement of Γ in most cases, and of NH when the source is unabsorbed (NH < 1022 cm−2). The results can hardly be used to reconstruct the parent distributions of the spectral parameters, while our Bayesian method provides meaningful multidimensional posteriors that will be used in a subsequent paper to infer the population.

X-ray illuminated accretion discs and quasar microlensing disc sizes

Aims. We study the half-light radius versus black hole mass as well as the luminosity versus black hole mass relations in active galactic nuclei (AGN) when the disc is illuminated by the X-ray corona. Methods. We used KYNSED, a recently developed spectral model for studying broadband spectral energy distribution in AGN. We considered non-illuminated Novikov-Thorne discs and X-ray illuminated discs based on a Novikov-Thorne temperature radial profile. We also considered the case where the temperature profile is modified by a colour-correction factor. In the case of X-ray illumination, we assumed that the X-ray luminosity is equal to the accretion power that is dissipated to the disc below a transition radius and we computed the half-light radius and the disc luminosity for many black hole masses, as well as a wide range of accretion rates, black hole spins, X-ray luminosities and heights of the corona. Results. The half-light radius of X-ray illuminated radii can be up to ∼3.5 times greater than the radius of a standard disc, even for a non-spinning black hole, based on a wide range of model parameters – as long as the transition radius is larger than three times the radius of the innermost stable circular orbit and the coronal height is greater than ∼40 Rg. This result is due to the fact that the absorbed X-rays act as a secondary source of energy, increasing the disc temperature, and mainly at large radii. Non-illuminated discs are consistent with observations, but only at the 2.5σ level. On the other hand, X-ray illuminated discs can explain both the half-light radius-black hole mass as well as the luminosity-black hole mass relation in AGN, for a wide range of physical parameters. The range of the parameter space is broader in the case where we consider the colour-correction factor. X-ray illuminated discs can explain the data when we observe gravitationally lensed quasars mainly face-on, but also if the mean inclination angle is 60°. In addition, we show that the observed X-ray luminosity of the gravitationally lensed quasars is fully consistent with the X-ray luminosity that is necessary for heating the disc. Conclusions. X-ray disc illumination was proposed many years ago to explain various features that are commonly observed in the X-ray spectra of AGN. Recently, we showed that X-ray illumination of the accretion disc can also explain the observed UV/optical time-lags in AGN, while in this work, we show that the same model can also account for the quasar micro-lensing disc size problem. These results support the hypothesis of the disc X-ray illumination in AGN.

X-ray simulations of polar gas in accreting supermassive black holes

ABSTRACT Recent observations have shown that a large portion of the mid-infrared (MIR) spectrum of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) stems from the polar regions. In this paper, we investigate the effects of this polar gas on the X-ray spectrum of AGNs using ray-tracing simulations. Two geometries for the polar gas are considered, (1) a hollow cone corresponding to the best-fitting MIR model and (2) a filled cone, both with varying column densities (ranging from 1021 to 1022.5 cm−2) along with a torus surrounding the central X-ray source. We find that the polar gas leads to an increase in the equivalent width of several fluorescence lines below ∼5 keV (e.g. O, Ne, Mg, Si). A filled geometry is unlikely for the polar component, as the X-ray spectra of many type 1 AGNs would show signatures of obscuration. We also consider extra emission from the narrow-line region such as a scattered power law with many photoionized lines from obscured AGNs, and different opening angles and matter compositions for the hollow cone. These simulations will provide a fundamental benchmark for current and future high spectral resolution X-ray instruments, such as those onboard XRISM and Athena.

BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey XXVII: scattered X-Ray radiation in obscured active galactic nuclei

ABSTRACT Accreting supermassive black holes (SMBHs), also known as active galactic nuclei (AGN), are generally surrounded by large amounts of gas and dust. This surrounding material reprocesses the primary X-ray emission produced close to the SMBH and gives rise to several components in the broadband X-ray spectra of AGN, including a power-law possibly associated with Thomson-scattered radiation. In this work, we study the properties of this scattered component for a sample of 386 hard-X-ray-selected, nearby ($z\sim0.03$) obscured AGN from the 70-month Swift/BAT catalogue. We investigate how the fraction of Thomson-scattered radiation correlates with different physical properties of AGN, such as line-of-sight column density, X-ray luminosity, black hole mass, and Eddington ratio. We find a significant negative correlation between the scattering fraction and the column density. Based on a large number of spectral simulations, we exclude the possibility that this anticorrelation is due to degeneracies between the parameters. The negative correlation also persists when considering different ranges of luminosity, black hole mass, and Eddington ratio. We discuss how this correlation might be either due to the angle dependence of the Thomson cross-section or to more obscured sources having a higher covering factor of the torus. We also find a positive correlation between the scattering fraction and the ratio of [O iii] λ5007 to X-ray luminosity. This result is consistent with previous studies and suggests that the Thomson-scattered component is associated with the narrow-line region.

Sustaining a warm corona in active galactic nucleus accretion discs

ABSTRACT Warm coronae, thick (τT = 10–20, where τT is the Thomson depth) Comptonizing regions with temperatures of ∼1 keV, are proposed to exist at the surfaces of accretion discs in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). By combining with the reflection spectrum, warm coronae may be responsible for producing the smooth soft excess seen in AGN X-ray spectra. This paper studies how a warm corona must adjust in order to sustain the soft excess through large changes in the AGN flux. Spectra from one-dimensional constant density and hydrostatic warm corona models are calculated assuming that the illuminating hard X-ray power law, gas density, Thomson depth, and coronal heating strength vary in response to changes in the accretion rate. We identify models that produce warm coronae with temperatures between 0.3 and 1.1 keV, and measure the photon indices and emitted fluxes in the 0.5–2 and 2–10 keV bands. Correlations and anticorrelations between these quantities depend on the evolution and structure of the warm corona. Tracing the path that an AGN follows through these correlations will constrain how warm coronae are heated and connected to the accretion disc. Variations in the density structure and coronal heating strength of warm coronae will lead to a variety of soft excess strengths and shapes in AGNs. A larger accretion rate will, on average, lead to a warm corona that produces a stronger soft excess, consistent with observations of local Seyfert galaxies.

A Broadband X-Ray Study of a Sample of AGNs with [O iii] Measured Inclinations

Abstract In modeling the X-ray spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), the inclination angle is a parameter that can play an important role in analyzing the X-ray spectra of AGNs, but it has never been studied in detail. We present a broadband X-ray spectral analysis of the joint Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array-XMM-Newton observations of 13 sources with [O iii] measured inclinations determined by Fischer et al. By freezing the inclination angles at the [O iii] measured values when modeling the observations, the spectra are well fitted, and the geometrical properties of the obscuring structure of the AGNs are slightly better constrained than those fitted when the inclination angles are left free to vary. We also test if one could freeze the inclinations at other specific angles in fitting the AGN X-ray spectra as has been commonly done in the literature. We find that one should always let the inclination angle be free to vary in modeling the X-ray spectra of AGNs, while fixing the inclination angle at [O iii] measured values and fixing the inclination angle at 60° also present correct fits of the sources in our sample. Correlations between the covering factor and the average column density of the obscuring torus with respect to the Eddington ratio are also measured, suggesting that the distribution of the material in the obscuring torus is regulated by the Eddington ratio, which is in agreement with previous studies. In addition, no geometrical correlation is found between the narrow line region of the AGN and the obscuring torus, suggesting that the geometry might be more complex than what is assumed in the simplistic unified model.

X-ray spectroscopy of the candidate AGNs in Henize 2–10 and NGC 4178: likely supernova remnants

Black holes in dwarf/bulgeless galaxies play a crucial role in studying the co-evolution of galaxies and their central black holes. Identifying massive black holes in dwarf galaxies suggests that the growth of black holes could precede that of galaxies. However, some of the most intriguing candidate active galactic nuclei (AGN) in small galaxies have such low luminosities that the sample is vulnerable to contamination by other sources, such as supernova remnants. We re-analysed Chandra X-ray Observatory observations of candidate AGN in Henize 2-10 and NGC 4178, considering the potential signals of emission lines in the minimally-binned X-ray spectra. We find that hot plasma models, which are typical of supernova remnants, explain the observed spectra much better than simple power-law models, which are appropriate for AGN. We identify clear signals of X-ray lines in the faint X-ray source identified with the radio source in Henize 2-10 by Reines et al. 2016. Combining our work with the MUSE measurement of the ionization parameter in this region by Cresci et al. 2017 indicates that this radio and X-ray source is more likely a supernova remnant than an AGN. A similar analysis of the low-count X-ray spectrum of a candidate AGN in NGC 4178 shows that a hot plasma model is about seventeen times more probable than a simple power-law model. Our results indicate that investigation of X-ray spectra, even in a low-count regime, can be a crucial tool to identify thermally-dominated supernova remnants among AGN candidates.

XZ: Deriving redshifts from X-ray spectra of obscured AGN

Context. Redshifts are fundamental for our understanding of extragalactic X-ray sources. Ambiguous counterpart associations, expensive optical spectroscopy, and/or multimission multiwavelength coverage to resolve degeneracies often make estimation difficult in practice. Aims. We attempt to constrain redshifts of obscured active galactic nuclei (AGN) using only low-resolution X-ray spectra. Methods. Our method for determining redshifts from the X-ray spectrum (XZ) fits AGN X-ray spectra with a moderately complex spectral model incorporating a corona, a torus obscurer, and a warm mirror. Using the Bayesian X-ray Astronomy (BXA) package, we constrain redshift, column density, photon index, and luminosity simultaneously. The redshift information primarily comes from absorption edges in Compton-thin AGN, and from the Fe Kα fluorescent line in heavily obscured AGN. A new generic background fitting method allows us to extract more information from limited numbers of source counts. Results. We derive redshift constraints for 74/321 hard-band detected sources in the Chandra deep field South. Comparing with spectroscopic redshifts, we find an outlier fraction of 8%, indicating that our model assumptions are valid. For three Chandra deep fields, we release our XZ redshift estimates. Conclusions. The independent XZ estimate is easy to apply and effective for a large fraction of obscured AGN in today’s deep surveys without the need for any additional data. Compared to different redshift estimation methods, XZ can resolve degeneracies in photometric redshifts, help detect potential association problems, and confirm uncertain single-line spectroscopic redshifts. With high spectral resolution and a large collecting area, this technique will be highly effective for Athena/WFI observations.

New Spectral Model for Constraining Torus Covering Factors from Broadband X-Ray Spectra of Active Galactic Nuclei

Abstract The basic unified model of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) invokes an anisotropic obscuring structure, usually referred to as a torus, to explain AGN obscuration as an angle-dependent effect. We present a new grid of X-ray spectral templates based on radiative transfer calculations in neutral gas in an approximately toroidal geometry, appropriate for CCD-resolution X-ray spectra (FWHM ≥ 130 eV). Fitting the templates to broadband X-ray spectra of AGNs provides constraints on two important geometrical parameters of the gas distribution around the supermassive black hole: the average column density and the covering factor. Compared to the currently available spectral templates, our model is more flexible, and capable of providing constraints on the main torus parameters in a wider range of AGNs. We demonstrate the application of this model using hard X-ray spectra from NuSTAR (3–79 keV) for four AGNs covering a variety of classifications: 3C 390.3, NGC 2110, IC 5063, and NGC 7582. This small set of examples was chosen to illustrate the range of possible torus configurations, from disk-like to sphere-like geometries with column densities below, as well as above, the Compton-thick threshold. This diversity of torus properties challenges the simple assumption of a standard geometrically and optically thick toroidal structure commonly invoked in the basic form of the unified model of AGNs. Finding broad consistency between our constraints and those from infrared modeling, we discuss how the approach from the X-ray band complements similar measurements of AGN structures at other wavelengths.

Properties of AGN coronae in the NuSTAR era – II. Hybrid plasma

The corona, a hot cloud of electrons close to the centre of the accretion disc, produces the hard X-ray power-law continuum commonly seen in luminous Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). The continuum has a high-energy turnover, typically in the range of one to several 100 keV and is suggestive of Comptonization by thermal electrons. We are studying hard X-ray spectra of AGN obtained with NuSTAR after correction for X-ray reflection and under the assumption that coronae are compact, being only a few gravitational radii in size as indicated by reflection and reverberation modelling. Compact coronae raise the possibility that the temperature is limited and indeed controlled by electron-positron pair production, as explored earlier (Paper I). Here we examine hybrid plasmas in which a mixture of thermal and nonthermal particles is present. Pair production from the nonthermal component reduces the temperature leading to a wider temperature range more consistent with observations.

Suzaku follow-up of heavily obscured active galactic nuclei detected in Swift/BAT survey: NGC 1106, UGC 03752, and NGC 2788A

Abstract We present the broad-band (0.5–100 keV) spectra of three heavily obscured active galactic nuclei (AGNs), NGC 1106, UGC 03752, and NGC 2788A, observed with Suzaku and the Swift/Burst Alert Telescope (BAT). The targets are selected from the Swift/BAT 70-month catalog on the basis of their high hardness ratio between above and below 10 keV, and their X-ray spectra are reported here for the first time. We apply three models: a conventional model utilizing an analytic reflection code, and two Monte Carlo based torus models with a doughnut-like geometry (MYTorus: Murphy & Yaqoob, 2009, MNRAS, 397, 1549) and with a nearly spherical geometry (Ikeda torus: Ikeda et al., 2009, ApJ, 692, 608). The three models can successfully reproduce the spectra, and the Ikeda torus model gives a better description than the MYTorus model in all targets. We identify NGC 1106 and NGC 2788A as Compton-thick AGNs. We point out that the common presence of unabsorbed reflection components below 7.1 keV in obscured AGNs, as observed from UGC 03752, is evidence for clumpy tori. This implies that detailed studies utilizing clumpy torus models are required to reach correct interpretation of the X-ray spectra of AGNs.

Powerful Outflows and Feedback from Active Galactic Nuclei

Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) represent the growth phases of the supermassive black holes in the center of almost every galaxy. Powerful, highly ionized winds, with velocities ∼0.1–0.2c, are a common feature in X-ray spectra of luminous AGNs, offering a plausible physical origin for the well-known connections between the hole and properties of its host. Observability constraints suggest that the winds must be episodic and detectable only for a few percent of their lifetimes. The most powerful wind feedback, establishing the M−σ relation, is probably not directly observable at all. The M−σ relation signals a global change in the nature of AGN feedback. At black hole masses below M−σ, feedback is confined to the immediate vicinity of the hole. At the M−σ mass, it becomes much more energetic and widespread and can drive away much of the bulge gas as a fast molecular outflow.

Relativistic reflection in the average X-ray spectrum of active galactic nuclei in the Véron-Cetty and Véron catalogue

The X-ray spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGN) unveil properties of matter around the super massive black hole (SMBH). We investigate the X-ray spectra of AGN focusing on Compton reflection and fluorescence, important processes of interaction between primary radiation and circum-nuclear material. Unresolved emission lines (most notably the Fe line) in the X-ray spectra of AGN indicate that this material is located far away from the SMBH. Contributions from the inner accretion disk, affected by relativistic effects, have also been detected in several cases. We studied the average X-ray spectrum of a sample of 263 X-ray unabsorbed AGN that yield 419023 counts in the 2-12 keV rest-frame band distributed among 388 XMM-Newton spectra. We fitted the average spectrum using a (basically) unabsorbed power law (primary radiation). From second model that represents the interaction of the primary radiation with matter located far away from the SMBH, we found that it was very significantly detected. Finally, we added a contribution from interaction with neutral material in the accretion disk close to the central SMBH, which is therefore smeared by relativistic effects, which improved the fit at 6 sigma. The reflection factors are 0.65 for the accretion disk and 0.25 for the torus. Replacing the neutral disk-reflection with low-ionisation disk reflection, also relativistically smeared, fits the data equally well, suggesting that we do not find evidence for a significant ionisation of the accretion disk. We detect distant neutral reflection in the average spectrum of unabsorbed AGN with z=0.8. Adding the disk-reflection component associated with a relativistic Fe line improves the data description at 6 sigma confidence level, suggesting that both reflection components are present. The disk-reflection component accounts for about 70 % of the total reflected flux.

THE HARD X-RAY SPECTRUM OF NGC 1365: SCATTERED LIGHT, NOT BLACK HOLE SPIN

Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) show excess X-ray emission above 10 keV compared with extrapolation of spectra from lower energies. Risaliti et al. have recently attempted to model the hard X-ray excess in the type 1.8 AGN NGC 1365, concluding that the hard excess most likely arises from Compton-scattered reflection of X-rays from an inner accretion disk close to the black hole. Their analysis disfavored a model in which the hard excess arises from a high column density of circumnuclear gas partially covering a primary X-ray source, despite such components being required in the NGC 1365 data below 10 keV. Using a Monte Carlo radiative transfer approach, we demonstrate that this conclusion is invalidated by (i) use of slab absorption models, which have unrealistic transmission spectra for partial covering gas, (ii) neglect of the effect of Compton scattering on transmitted spectra and (iii) inadequate modeling of the spectrum of scattered X-rays. The scattered spectrum is geometry dependent and, for high global covering factors, may dominate above 10 keV. We further show that, in models of circumnuclear gas, the suppression of the observed hard X-ray flux by reprocessing may be no larger than required by the `light bending' model invoked for inner disk reflection, and the expected emission line strengths lie within the observed range. We conclude that the time-invariant `red wing' in AGN X-ray spectra is probably caused by continuum transmitted through and scattered from circumnuclear gas, not by highly redshifted line emission, and that measurement of black hole spin is not possible.

X-ray and multiwavelength insights into the inner structure of high-luminosity disc-like emitters

We present X-ray and multiwavelength studies of a sample of eight high-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with disc-like H\beta emission-line profiles selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7. These sources have higher redshift (z~0.6) than the majority of the known disc-like emitters, and they occupy a largely unexplored space in the luminosity-redshift plane. Seven sources have typical AGN X-ray spectra with power-law photon indices of \Gamma~1.4-2.0; two of them show some X-ray absorption (column density N_H~10^{21}-10^{22} cm^{-2}$ for neutral gas). The other source, J0850+4451, has only three hard X-ray photons detected and is probably heavily obscured (N_H>3x10^{23} cm^{-2}). This object is also identified as a low-ionization broad absorption line (BAL) quasar based on Mg II \lambda2799 absorption; it is the first disc-like emitter reported that is also a BAL quasar. The IR-to-UV spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of these eight sources are similar to the mean SEDs of typical quasars with a UV "bump", suggestive of standard accretion discs radiating with high efficiency, which differs from low-luminosity disc-like emitters. Studies of the X-ray-to-optical power-law slope parameters (\alpha_{OX}) indicate that there is no significant excess X-ray emission in these high-luminosity disc-like emitters. Energy budget analysis suggests that for disc-like emitters in general, the inner disc must illuminate and ionize the outer disc efficiently (~15% of the nuclear ionizing radiation is required on average) via direct illumination and/or scattering. Warped accretion discs are probably needed for direct illumination to work in high-luminosity objects, as their geometrically thin inner discs decrease the amount of direct illumination possible for a flat disc.

Averaging the AGN X-ray spectra from deepChandrafields

The X-ray spectra of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) carry the signatures of the emission from the central region, close to the Super Massive Black Hole (SMBH). For this reason, the study of deep X-ray spectra is a powerful instrument to investigate the origin of their emission. The emission line most often observed in the X-ray spectra of AGN is Fe K. It is known that it can be broadened and deformed by relativistic effects if emitted close enough to the central SMBH. In recent statistical studies of the X-ray spectra of AGN samples, it is found that a narrow Fe line is ubiquitous, while whether the broad features are as common is still uncertain. We present here the results of an investigation on the characteristics of the Fe line in the average X-ray spectra of AGN in deep Chandra fields. The average spectrum of the AGN is computed using Chandra spectra with more than 200 net counts from the AEGIS, Chandra Deep Field North and Chandra Deep Field South surveys. The sample spans a broader range of X-ray luminosities than other samples studied with stacking methods up to z=3.5. We analyze the average spectra of this sample using our own averaging method, checking the results against extensive simulations. Subsamples defined in terms of column density of the local absorber, luminosity and z are also investigated. We found a very significant Fe line with a narrow profile in all our samples and in almost all the subsamples that we constructed. The equivalent width (EW) of the narrow line estimated in the average spectrum of the full sample is 74 eV. The broad line component is significantly detected in the subsample of AGN with L<1.43 1E44 cgs and z<0.76, with EW=108 eV. We concluded that the narrow Fe line is an ubiquitous feature of the X-ray spectra of the AGN up to z=3.5.The broad line component is significant in the X-ray spectra of the AGN with low luminosity and low z.

Relativistic reflection X-ray spectra of accretion disks

We have calculated the relativistic reflection component of the X-ray spectra of accretion disks in active galactic nuclei (AGN). Our calculations have shown that the spectra can be significantly modified by the motion of the accretion flow, and the gravity and rotation of the central black hole. The absorption edges in the spectra suffer severe energy shifts and smearing, and the degree of distortion depends on the system parameters, in particular, the inner radius of the accretion disk and the disk viewing inclination angles. The effects are significant. Fluorescent X-ray emission lines from the inner accretion disk could be a powerful diagnostic of space-time distortion and dynamical relativistic effects near the event horizons of accreting black holes. However, improper treatment of the reflection component in fitting the X-ray continuum could give rise to spurious line-like features. These features mimic the true fluorescent emission lines and may mask their relativistic signatures. Fully relativistic models for reflection continua together with the emission lines are needed in order to extract black-hole parameters from the AGN X-ray spectra.

X-ray absorption and reflection in active galactic nuclei

X-ray spectroscopy offers an opportunity to study the complex mixture of emitting and absorbing components in the circumnuclear regions of active galactic nuclei (AGN), and to learn about the accretion process that fuels AGN and the feedback of material to their host galaxies. We describe the spectral signatures that may be studied and review the X-ray spectra and spectral variability of active galaxies, concentrating on progress from recent Chandra, XMM-Newton and Suzaku data for local type 1 AGN. We describe the evidence for absorption covering a wide range of column densities, ionization and dynamics, and discuss the growing evidence for partial-covering absorption from data at energies ≳ 10 keV. Such absorption can also explain the observed X-ray spectral curvature and variability in AGN at lower energies and is likely an important factor in shaping the observed properties of this class of source. Consideration of self-consistent models for local AGN indicates that X-ray spectra likely comprise a combination of absorption and reflection effects from material originating within a few light days of the black hole as well as on larger scales. It is likely that AGN X-ray spectra may be strongly affected by the presence of disk-wind outflows that are expected in systems with high accretion rates, and we describe models that attempt to predict the effects of radiative transfer through such winds, and discuss the prospects for new data to test and address these ideas.

STUDY ON X-RAY SPECTRA OF OBSCURED ACTIVE GALACTIC NUCLEI BASED ON MONTE CARLO SIMULATION—AN INTERPRETATION OF OBSERVED WIDE-BAND SPECTRA

Monte Carlo simulation is one of the best tools to study the complex spectra of Compton-thick active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and to figure out the relation between their nuclear structures and X-ray spectra. We have simulated X-ray spectra of Compton-thick AGNs obscured by an accretion torus whose structure is characterized by a half-opening angle, an inclination angle of the torus relative to the observer, and a column density along the equatorial plane. We divided the simulated spectra into three components: one direct component, an absorbed reflection component, and an unabsorbed reflection component. We then deduced the dependences of these components on the parameters describing the structure of the torus. Our simulation results were applied to fit the wide-band spectrum of the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 3 obtained by Suzaku. The spectral analysis indicates that we observe the nucleus along a line of sight intercepting the torus near its edge, and the column density along the equatorial plane was estimated to be ~1024 cm–2. Using this model, we can estimate the luminosities of both the direct emission and the emission irradiating the surrounding matter. This is useful to find the time variability and time lag between the direct and reflected light.

A DEEPXMM-NEWTONOBSERVATION OF THE QUASAR 3C 287

We report on an XMM-Newton observation of the z=1.055 quasar and Giga-hertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) source 3C 287. Our 62.3 ksec observation provides an exceptional X-ray view of a prominent member of this important subclass of active galactic nuclei (AGN). The X-ray spectra of 3C 287 are consistent with a simple absorbed power-law with a spectral index of Gamma = 1.72 +/- 0.02. Our fits imply a bolometric luminosity of L = 5.8 +/- 0.2 E+45 erg/s over the 0.3-10.0 keV band; this gives a mass lower limit of M > 4.6 E+7 Msun, assuming X-rays contribute 10% of the bolometric luminosity and radiation at the Eddington limit. Iron emission lines are common in the X-ray spectra of many AGN, but the observed spectra appear to rule out strong emission lines in 3C 287. The simple power-law spectrum and absence of strong emission lines may support a picture where our line of sight intersects a relativistic jet. Milliarcsecond radio imaging of 3C 287 appears to support this interpretation. We discuss our results in the context of different AGN sub-classes and the possibility that GPS sources harbor newly-formed black hole jets.
