Black Hole Activity Imprints on the Internal Plateau and the Subsequent Sharp Decay

A stellar-mass black hole (BH) or a millisecond magnetar is believed to be born as the central engine of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). The presence of plateaus in the X-ray extended emission or afterglow of GRBs is widely accepted as an indicator of a magnetar central engine, particularly those with a sharp decay (faster than t −3), the so-called internal plateau. However, an alternative model, by taking the evolution of the magnetic flux at the BH horizon into account, suggests that an internal plateau can also arise from a jet powered by the Blandford–Znajek (BZ) mechanism (hereafter, a BZ jet). In this study, we propose that a precessional BZ jet would manifest a quasiperiodic oscillation (QPO) signature on the internal plateau and the subsequent sharp decay. Such lightcurves cannot be readily explained by the activity of a short-lived, supermassive magnetar, thus favoring a Kerr BH as the central engine. The X-ray afterglow of GRB 050904, comprising nine flares, is characterized by a QPO-modulated plateau and sharp decay, which can be well reproduced by a precessional BZ jet model. Therefore, one potential clue for distinguishing between these two engines lies in whether the QPO signature is present throughout the entire plateau and the subsequent sharp decay, as the magnetar scenario suggests a collapse at the end of the plateau.

Inferring the Redshift of More than 150 GRBs with a Machine-learning Ensemble Model

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), due to their high luminosities, are detected up to a redshift of 10, and thus have the potential to be vital cosmological probes of early processes in the Universe. Fulfilling this potential requires a large sample of GRBs with known redshifts, but due to observational limitations, only 11% have known redshifts (z). There have been numerous attempts to estimate redshifts via correlation studies, most of which have led to inaccurate predictions. To overcome this, we estimated GRB redshift via an ensemble-supervised machine-learning (ML) model that uses X-ray afterglows of long-duration GRBs observed by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. The estimated redshifts are strongly correlated (a Pearson coefficient of 0.93) and have an rms error, namely, the square root of the average squared error 〈Δz 2〉, of 0.46 with the observed redshifts showing the reliability of this method. The addition of GRB afterglow parameters improves the predictions considerably by 63% compared to previous results in peer-reviewed literature. Finally, we use our ML model to infer the redshifts of 154 GRBs, which increase the known redshifts of long GRBs with plateaus by 94%, a significant milestone for enhancing GRB population studies that require large samples with redshift.

Absorption of Gamma-Ray Burst X-Ray Afterglows by the Missing Baryons: Confronting Observations with Cosmological Simulations

A large fraction of the baryons at low redshift are undetected and likely reside in the tenuous, hot intergalactic medium (IGM). One way to probe the missing baryons is through their absorption of bright sources. The anomalous absorption excess in the X-ray afterglows of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) has been suggested to result from the missing baryons. In order to test this hypothesis, the present paper employs IllustrisTNG simulations to compute the X-ray absorption effect on cosmological distances. The simulation shows that ionization of H and He in the IGM leaves the metals responsible for >60% of the X-ray opacity of high-z sources. The high-z asymptotic optical depth at 0.5 keV in the simulation reaches 0.15 ± 0.07, while the GRB afterglow values tend to ≈0.4, implying that the missing baryons can account for a significant fraction of the observed opacity. The remaining discrepancy is ascribed mainly to the low average metallicity in the simulation, which drops from 0.06 solar at z = 0 to 0.01 at z = 3, and which is below previously measured values.

Pseudo-redshifts of Gamma-Ray Bursts Derived from the L–T–E Correlation

The X-ray afterglow of many gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) exhibits a plateau phase before the normal power-law decay stage, which may be related to continued activities of the central engine. Tang et al. collected 174 such GRBs and confirmed the so-called L–T–E correlation which involves three key parameters, i.e., the isotropic γ-ray energy E γ,iso of the prompt phase, the end time T a of the plateau phase, and the corresponding X-ray luminosity L X. In this study, the L–T–E correlation is confirmed and updated as with a large sample consisting of 210 plateau GRBs with known redshifts. The tight correlation is then applied to derive the pseudo-redshift of other 130 plateau GRBs whose redshifts are not directly measured. Statistical analysis is also carried out on this pseudo-redshift sample.

Low-frequency Gravitational-wave Memories from Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglows with Energy Injections

Ultrarelativistic gamma-ray burst (GRB) jets are strong gravitational-wave (GW) sources with memory-type signals. The plateau (or shallow decay) phases driven by the energy injection may appear in the early X-ray afterglows of GRBs. In this paper, we investigate GW signals as well as X-ray afterglow emissions in the framework of GRB jets with energy injections, and both short- and long-duration GRBs are considered. We find that, regardless of the case, and because of the antibeaming and time delay effects, a rising slope that emerges in the waveform of the GW signal, due to the energy injection, lags far behind the energy ejection, and the typical frequencies of the characteristic amplitudes fall within a low-frequency region of ∼10−4–10−6 Hz; we also consider that the GW memories triggered by the GRB jets with energy injection have previously not been accounted for and that nearby GRBs with strong energy injections may disturb the measurement of the stochastic GW background. Such GW memory detection would provide a direct test for models of energy injection in the scenario of GRB jets.

The Spectral Evolution Patterns and Implications of Gamma-Ray Burst X-Ray Flares

We present a time-resolved spectral analysis of bright X-ray flares observed by Swift X-ray telescope from 2004 December to 2021 December. We selected 58 bright flares from 56 gamma-ray burst X-ray afterglows to perform time-resolved spectral analysis. We find that there is a strong spectral evolution in X-ray flares. Spectral evolution exists in all the X-ray flares. We have not found flares without spectral evolutions in our samples. The spectrum of an X-ray afterglow is dominated by the flare when it exists. Four spectral evolution patterns were found, i.e., hard-to-soft, intensity tracking, soft-to-hard, and anti-intensity tracking. Most of the flares (46 flares, 79.3%) show a spectral evolution from hard to soft. Five (8.6%) flares are intensity tracking. Two (3.5%) flares show soft-to-hard. Five (8.6%) flares show anti-intensity tracking. Therefore, hard-to-soft spectral evolution patterns dominate the spectral evolutions of X-ray flares. In other words, the hard-to-soft spectral evolution pattern is the main evolution pattern of X-ray flares. Hard-to-soft, intensity tracking, and soft-to-hard spectral evolution patterns are the same as prompt emission spectral evolutions, indicating that the origin of flares should be the same as prompt emissions and the flares are the lower energy band emissions of the prompt emissions. The spectral evolution intensities are independent of the peak time and FWHM of the flares. In other words, the spectral evolution intensity is irrelevant to the flare occurrence time and its duration but related to the peak fluxes of flares. This means that the more luminous the flares, the stronger the spectral evolutions.

Flares in gamma-ray burst X-ray afterglows as prompt emission from slightly misaligned structured jets

ABSTRACT We develop a model to explain the flaring activity in gamma-ray burst X-ray afterglows within the framework of slightly misaligned observers to structured jets. We suggest that flares could be the manifestation of prompt dissipation within the core of the jet, appearing to a misaligned observer in the X-ray band because of less favourable Doppler boosting. These flares appear during the afterglow phase because of core–observer light travel delays. In this picture, the prompt emission recorded by this observer comes from material along their line of sight, in the lateral structure of the jet, outside the jet’s core. We start by laying down the basic analytical framework to determine the flares characteristics as a function of those of the gamma-ray pulse an aligned observer would see. We show that there is viable parameter space to explain flares with typical observing times and luminosities. We then analytically explore this model, showing that it naturally produces flares with small aspect ratios, as observed. We perform fits of our model to two Swift/XRT flares representing two different types of morphology, to show that our model can capture both. The ejection time of the core jet material responsible of the flare is a critical parameter. While it always remains small compared to the observed time of the flare, confirming that our model does not require very late central engine activity, late ejection times are strongly favoured, sometimes larger than the observed duration of the parent gamma-ray burst’s prompt emission as measured by T90.

Energy Injection Driven by Precessing Jets in Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglows

Abstract Jet precession is considered to universally exist in different-scale astronomical phenomena, including gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). For the long-lived GRB central engine, the relativistic precessing jets will periodically inject kinetic energy into the external shocks, then significantly modulate the shapes of the light curves (LCs) in GRB afterglows. In this paper, we adopt the standard external shock model to investigate the effects of jet precession on GRB X-ray afterglows in cases with different parameters, i.e., the steady or time-dependent jet powers, precession periods, precession angles, and viewing angles. In the case where the jet powers are in steady or slow decay and the jet can sweep across the line of sight, shallow decay (or plateau) segments should appear; otherwise, a giant bump will emerge in the GRB afterglow LCs. We show that jet precession is a new plausible mechanism of the energy injection in GRBs. Moreover, some observed X-ray transients without GRB associations might be powered by the precessing jets.

Dynamics and Emission of Wind-powered Afterglows of Gamma-Ray Bursts: Flares, Plateaus, and Steep Decays

Abstract We have developed a model of early X-ray afterglows of gamma-ray bursts originating from the reverse shock (RS) propagating through ultrarelativistic, highly magnetized pulsar-like winds produced by long-lasting central engines. We first performed fluid and magnetohydrodynamic numerical simulations of relativistic double explosions. We demonstrate that even for constant properties of the wind a variety of temporal behaviors can be produced, depending on the energy of the initial explosion and the wind power, the delay time for the switch-on of the wind, and the magnetization of the wind. X-ray emission of the highly magnetized RS occurs in the fast-cooling regime—this ensures high radiative efficiency and allows fast intensity variations. We demonstrate that (i) RS emission naturally produces light curves, showing power-law temporal evolution with various temporal indices; (ii) mild wind power, of the order of ∼1046 erg s−1 (equivalent isotropic), can reproduce the afterglows’ plateau phase; (iii) termination of the wind can produce sudden steep decays; and (iv) short-duration afterglow flares are due to mild variations in the wind luminosity, with small total injected energy.

Interpreting the X-ray afterglows of gamma-ray bursts with radiative losses and millisecond magnetars

ABSTRACT The spin-down energy of millisecond magnetars has been invoked to explain X-ray afterglow observations of a significant fraction of short and long gamma-ray bursts. Here, we extend models previously introduced in the literature, incorporating radiative losses with the spin-down of a magnetar central engine through an arbitrary braking index. Combining this with a model for the tail of the prompt emission, we show that our model can better explain the data than millisecond-magnetar models without radiative losses or those that invoke spin-down solely through vacuum dipole radiation. We find that our model predicts a subset of X-ray flares seen in some gamma-ray bursts. We can further explain the diversity of X-ray plateaus by altering the radiative efficiency and measure the braking index of newly born millisecond magnetars. We measure the braking index of GRB061121 as $n=4.85^{+0.11}_{-0.15}$ suggesting the millisecond-magnetar born in this gamma-ray burst spins down predominantly through gravitational-wave emission.

Detection capabilities of the Athena X-IFU for the warm-hot intergalactic medium using gamma-ray burst X-ray afterglows

At low redshifts, the observed baryonic density falls far short of the total number of baryons predicted. Cosmological simulations suggest that these baryons reside in filamentary gas structures, known as the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM). As a result of the high temperatures of these filaments, the matter is highly ionised such that it absorbs and emits far-UV and soft X-ray photons. Athena, the proposed European Space Agency X-ray observatory, aims to detect the “missing” baryons in the WHIM up to redshifts of z = 1 through absorption in active galactic nuclei and gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglow spectra, allowing for the study of the evolution of these large-scale structures of the Universe. This work simulates WHIM filaments in the spectra of GRB X-ray afterglows with Athena using the SImulation of X-ray TElescopes framework. We investigate the feasibility of their detection with the X-IFU instrument, through O VII (E = 573 eV) and O VIII (E = 674 eV) absorption features, for a range of equivalent widths imprinted onto GRB afterglow spectra of observed starting fluxes ranging between 10−12 and 10−10 erg cm−2 s−1, in the 0.3−10 keV energy band. The analyses of X-IFU spectra by blind line search show that Athena will be able to detect O VII−O VIII absorption pairs with EWO VII > 0.13 eV and EWO VIII > 0.09 eV for afterglows with F > 2 × 10−11 erg cm−2 s−1. This allows for the detection of ≈ 45−137 O VII−O VIII absorbers during the four-year mission lifetime. The work shows that to obtain an O VII−O VIII detection of high statistical significance, the local hydrogen column density should be limited at NH < 8 × 1020 cm−2.

Late X-ray flares from the interaction of a reverse shock with a stratified ejecta in GRB afterglows: simulations on a moving mesh

ABSTRACT Late activity of the central engine is often invoked in order to explain the flares observed in the early X-ray afterglow of gamma-ray bursts, either in the form of an active neutron star remnant or (fall-back) accretion on to a black hole. However, these scenarios are not always plausible, in particular when flares are delayed to very late times after the burst. Recently, a new scenario was proposed that suggests X-ray flares can be the result of the passing of a long-lived reverse shock through a stratified ejecta, with the advantage that it does not require late-time engine activity. In this work, we numerically demonstrate this scenario to be physically plausible, by performing one-dimensional simulations of ejecta dynamics and emission using our novel moving-mesh relativistic hydrodynamics code. Improved efficiency and precision over previous work enables the exploration of a broader range of set-ups. We can introduce a more physically realistic description of the circumburst medium mass density. We can also locally trace the cooling of electrons when computing the broad-band emission from these set-ups. We show that the synchrotron cooling time-scale can dominate the flare decay time if the stratification in the ejecta is constrained to a localized angular region inside the jet, with size corresponding to the relativistic causal connection angle, and that it corresponds to values reported in observations. We demonstrate that this scenario can produce a large range of observed flare times, suggesting a connection between flares and initial ejection dynamics rather than with late-time remnant activity.

Magnetar as Central Engine of Gamma-Ray Bursts: Quasi-universal Jet, Event Rate, and X-Ray Luminosity Function of Dipole Radiations

Abstract Early shallow-decaying X-ray afterglows of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) may be attributed to the dipole radiations of newly born magnetars. Assuming that the GRB jets powered by magnetars are quasi-universal, we find that the jet structure can be parameterized as a uniform jet with a luminosity of (1σ) and an opening angle (50% confidence level), surrounding by a power-law decay component with an index of (1σ). The inferred local GRB rate is ρ = 9.6 Gpc−3 yr−1 by including both the typical GRBs and LL-GRBs as the same population. The typical viewing angle is 3.3°, and may be 20° ∼ 30° for LL-GRBs. The X-ray luminosity function of the dipole radiation wind can be empirically described by a broken power-law function with indices and broken at . In the case where the wind outflow is collimated and coaxial with the GRB jet, we find that the wind structure is similar to the GRB jet, i.e., , , and . The observed correlation between the prompt gamma-ray luminosity and X-ray luminosity of the wind may result from the viewing angle effect in such a jet–wind system. A discussion on surveys using the X-ray instruments on board the Einstein Probe mission in the soft X-ray band for the jet and wind emission is also presented.

Less noticeable shallow decay phase in early X-ray afterglows of GeV/TeV-detected gamma-ray bursts

ABSTRACT The nature of the shallow decay phase in the X-ray afterglow of the gamma-ray burst (GRB) is not yet clarified. We analyse the data of early X-ray afterglows of 26 GRBs triggered by Burst Alert Telescope onboard Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory and subsequently detected by Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) and/or Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes. It is found that nine events (including two out of three very-high-energy gamma-ray events) have no shallow decay phase and that their X-ray afterglow light curves are well described by single power-law model except for the jet break at later epoch. The rest are fitted by double power-law model and have a break in the early epoch (around ks), however, eight events (including a very-high-energy gamma-ray event) have the pre-break decay index larger than 0.7. We also analyse the data of well-sampled X-ray afterglows of GRBs without LAT detection and compare their decay properties with those of high-energy and very-high-energy gamma-ray events. It is found that for the GeV/TeV bursts, the fraction of events whose X-ray afterglows are described by single power law is significantly larger than those for non-GeV/TeV GRBs. Even if the GeV/TeV GRBs have shallow decay phase, their decay slope tends to be steeper than non-GeV/TeV bursts, that is, they have less noticeable shallow decay phase in the early X-ray afterglow. A possible interpretation along with the energy injection model is briefly discussed.

X-ray plateaus in gamma-ray bursts’ light curves from jets viewed slightly off-axis

ABSTRACT Using multiple observational arguments, recent work has shown that cosmological gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are typically viewed at angles within, or close to the cores of their relativistic jets. One of those arguments relied on the lack of tens-of-days-long periods of very shallow evolution that would be seen in the afterglow light curves of GRBs viewed at large angles. Motivated by these results, we consider that GRBs efficiently produce γ-rays only within a narrow region around the core. We show that, on these near-core lines of sight, structured jets naturally produce shallow phases in the X-ray afterglow of GRBs. These plateaus would be seen by a large fraction of observers and would last between 102–105 s. They naturally reproduce the observed distributions of time-scales and luminosities as well as the intercorrelations between plateau duration, plateau luminosity, and prompt γ-ray energy. An advantage of this interpretation is that it involves no late-time energy injection which would be both challenging from the point of view of the central engine and, as we show here, less natural given the observed correlations between plateau and prompt properties.

The Shallow Decay Segment of GRB X-Ray Afterglow Revisited

Abstract Based on the early-year observations from Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, Liang et al. performed a systematic analysis for the shallow decay component of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) X-ray afterglow, in order to explore its physical origin. Here we revisit the analysis with an updated sample (with Swift/XRT GRBs between 2004 February and 2017 July). We find that with a larger sample, (1) the distributions of the characteristic properties of the shallow decay phase (e.g., t b , S X, ΓX,1, and α X,1) still accord with normal or lognormal distribution; (2) ΓX,1 and Γ γ still show no correlation, but the tentative correlations of durations, energy fluences, and isotropic energies between the gamma-ray and X-ray phases still exist; (3) for most GRBs, there is no significant spectral evolution between the shallow decay segment and its follow-up segment, and the latter is usually consistent with the external-shock models; (4) assuming that the central engine has a power-law luminosity release history as , we find that the value q is mainly distributed between −0.5 and 0.5, with an average value of 0.16 ± 0.12; (5) the tentative correlation between and disappears, so that the global three-parameter correlation ( ) becomes less significant; (6) the anticorrelation between L X and and the three-parameter correlation ( ) indeed exist with a high confidence level. Overall, our results are generally consistent with Liang et al., confirming their suggestion that the shallow decay segment in most bursts is consistent with an external forward shock origin, probably due to a continuous energy injection from a long-lived central engine.

Is Bremsstrahlung a Possible Mechanism to Explain the Thermal Feature in the GRB 130925A X-Ray Afterglow?

It has been reported that some X-ray spectra of gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows cannot be fitted by a simple power law. A blackbody component is added to precisely fit the thermal feature in these spectra. Alternatively, we propose that bremsstrahlung radiation can also be one possible mechanism to explain the thermal component of the GRB X-ray afterglow. In particular, we examine the X-ray afterglow of the ultra-long GRB 130925A in this paper. By our calculation, we find that the X-ray thermal component observed by both Swift-XRT and NuSTAR can be well explained by the bremsstrahlung radiation. Our results indicate that the GRBs with the bremsstrahlung emission in the X-ray afterglow could be born in a metal-rich and dusty environment.

Determining the Efficiency of Converting Magnetar Spindown Energy into Gamma-Ray Burst X-Ray Afterglow Emission and Its Possible Implications

Abstract Plateaus are common in X-ray afterglows of gamma-ray bursts. Among the few scenarios regarding their origin, the leading one is that there exists a magnetar inside and it persistently injects its spindown energy into an afterglow. In previous studies, the radiation efficiency of this process is assumed to be a constant at ≳0.1, which is quite simple and strong. In this work we obtain the efficiency from a physical point of view and find that this efficiency strongly depends on the injected luminosity. One implication of this result is that those X-ray afterglow light curves that show steeper temporal decay than t −2 after the plateau phase can be naturally understood now. Also, the braking indexes deduced from afterglow fitting are found to be larger than those in previous studies, which are more reasonable for newborn magnetars.

X-Ray Afterglows of Short Gamma-Ray Bursts: Magnetar or Fireball?

Abstract The origin of the X-ray afterglows of gamma-ray bursts has regularly been debated. We fit both the fireball-shock and millisecond-magnetar models of gamma-ray bursts to the X-ray data of GRB 130603B and 140903A. We use Bayesian model selection to answer the question of which model best explains the data. This is dependent on the maximum allowed non-rotating neutron star mass M TOV, which depends solely on the unknown nuclear equation of state. We show that the data for GRB 140903A favors the millisecond-magnetar model for all possible equations of state, while the data for GRB 130603B favors the millisecond-magnetar model if M TOV ≳ 2.3 M ⊙. If M TOV ≲ 2.3 M ⊙, the data for GRB 130603B supports the fireball-shock model. We discuss implications of this result in regards to the nuclear equation of state and the prospect of gravitational-wave emission from newly born millisecond magnetars.

On the Magnetar Origin of the GRBs Presenting X-Ray Afterglow Plateaus

Abstract The X-ray afterglow plateau emission observed in many gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) has been interpreted as being fueled either by fallback onto a newly formed black hole or by the spin-down luminosity of an ultra-magnetized millisecond neutron star. If the latter model is assumed, GRB X-ray afterglow light curves can be reproduced analytically. We fit a sample of GRB X-ray plateaus, interestingly yielding a distribution in the diagram of magnetic field versus spin period (B–P) consistent with B ∝ P 7/6, which is consistent with GRB expectations of the well-established physics of the spin-up line for accreting Galactic X-ray pulsars. The normalization of the relation that we obtain perfectly matches spin-up line predictions for typical neutron star masses (∼1 M ⊙) and radii (∼10 km), and for mass accretion rates typically expected in GRBs, . Short GRBs with extended emission (SEEs) appear toward the long-period end of the distribution, and long GRBs (LGRBs) toward the short-period end. This result is consistent with expectations from the spin-up limit, where the total accreted mass determines the position of the neutron star in the B–P diagram. The B–P distributions for LGRBs and SEEs are statistically different, further supporting the idea that the fundamental plane relation—a tri-dimensional correlation between the X-ray luminosity at the end of the plateau, the end time of the plateau, and the 1 s peak luminosity in the prompt emission—is a powerful discriminant among those populations. Our conclusions are robust against suppositions regarding the collimation angle of the GRB and the magnetar braking index, which shift the resulting properties of the magnetar parallel to the spin-up line, and strongly support a magnetar origin for GRBs presenting X-ray plateaus.
