Spin 12 from gluons

The theta vacuum in QCD is obtained from the standard vacuum, after twisting by the exponential of the Chern–Simons term. However, a question remains–what is the quantum operator [Formula: see text] for winding number 1? We construct this operator [Formula: see text] in this note. The Poincaré rotation generators commute with it only if they are augmented by the spin [Formula: see text] representation of the Lorentz group, coming from large gauge transformations. This result is analogous to the well-known “spin-isopin” mixing result due to Jackiw and Rebbi [Phys. Rev. Lett. 36, 1116 (1976)], and Hasenfratz and ’t Hooft [Phys. Rev. Lett. 36, 1119 (1976)]. There is a similar result in fuzzy physics literature of Balachandran, Kurkcuoglu and Vaidya [Lectures on Fuzzy and Fuzzy Susy Physics (World Scientific Publishing Company, 2007)]. This shows that states can drastically affect representations of observables. This fact is further shown by charged states dressed by infrared clouds. Following Mund, Rehren and Schroer [arXiv:hep-th/2109.10342], we find that Lorentz invariance is spontaneously broken in these sectors. This result has been extended earlier to QCD (Balachandran, Nair, Pinzul, Reyes-Lega and Vaidya [arXiv:2112.08631 [hep-th]], reference given in the Final Remarks) where even the global QCD group is shown to be broken. It is argued that the escort fields of Mund, Rehren and Schroer [arXiv:hep-th/2109.10342] are the Higgs fields for Lorentz and color breaking. They are string-localized fields where the strings live in a union of de Sitter spaces. Their oscillations and those of the infrared cloud can generate the associated Goldstone modes.

A remark on quantitative unique continuation from subsets of the boundary of positive measure

The question of uniqueness of harmonic functions in a domain Ω ⊂ R d \Omega \subset \mathbb {R}^d with boundary ∂ Ω \partial \Omega , satisfying Dirichlet boundary conditions and with normal derivatives vanishing on a subset of the boundary ω \omega of positive d − 1 d-1 dimensional measure has attracted a lot of attention (see e.g. V. Adolfsson and L. Escauriaza [Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 50 (1997), pp. 935–969]; F.-H. Lin [Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 44 (1991), pp. 287–308]; X. Tolsa [Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 76 (2023), pp. 305–336]). It is essentially a consequence of Carleman estimates when ω \omega contains an open subset of the boundary (uniqueness for second order elliptic operators across an hypersurface). The main open questions (about uniqueness) concern now Lipschitz domains and variable coefficients. Here, using results by Logunov and Malinnikova [Nodal sets of Laplace eigenfunctions: estimates of the Hausdorff measure in dimensions two and three, Birkhäuser/Springer, Cham, 2018, pp. 333-344; Proceedings of the International Congress of Mathematicians–Rio de Janeiro 2018, World Scientific Publishing, Hackensack, NJ, 2018, pp. 2391–2411], we consider the simpler case of W 2 , ∞ W^{2, \infty } domains but prove quantitative uniqueness both for Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. As an application, we deduce quantitative estimates for the Dirichlet and Neumann Laplace eigenfunctions on a W 2 , ∞ W^{2, \infty } domain with boundary.

Generalized Pohozhaev’s identity for radial solutions of p-Laplace equations

Abstract We derive a generalized Pohozhaev’s identity for radial solutions of p-Laplace equations, by using the approach in [P. Korman, Global Solution Curves for Semilinear Elliptic Equations, World Scientific Publishing, Hackensack, 2012], thus extending the work [H. Brézis and L. Nirenberg, Positive solutions of nonlinear elliptic equations involving critical Sobolev exponents, Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 36 1983, 4, 437–477], where this identity was implicitly used for the Laplace equation.

The Case Against Smooth Null Infinity I: Heuristics and Counter-Examples

This paper initiates a series of works dedicated to the rigorous study of the precise structure of gravitational radiation near infinity. We begin with a brief review of an argument due to Christodoulou (in: The Ninth Marcel Grossmann Meeting, World Scientific Publishing Company, Singapore, 2002) stating that Penrose’s proposal of smooth conformal compactification of spacetime (or smooth null infinity) fails to accurately capture the structure of gravitational radiation emitted by N infalling masses coming from past timelike infinity i^-. Modelling gravitational radiation by scalar radiation, we then take a first step towards a dynamical understanding of the non-smoothness of null infinity by constructing solutions to the spherically symmetric Einstein–Scalar field equations that arise from polynomially decaying boundary data, rphi sim t^{-1} as trightarrow -infty , on a timelike hypersurface (to be thought of as the surface of a star) and the no incoming radiation condition, rpartial _vphi =0, on past null infinity. We show that if the initial Hawking mass at i^- is nonzero, then, in accordance with the non-smoothness of {mathcal {I}}^+, the asymptotic expansion of partial _v(rphi ) near {mathcal {I}}^+ reads partial _v(rphi )=Cr^{-3}log r+{mathcal {O}}(r^{-3}) for some non-vanishing constant C. In fact, the same logarithmic terms appear already in the linear theory, i.e. when considering the spherically symmetric linear wave equation on a fixed Schwarzschild background. As a corollary, we can apply our results to the scattering problem on Schwarzschild: Putting compactly supported scattering data for the linear (or coupled) wave equation on {mathcal {I}}^- and on {mathcal {H}}^-, we find that the asymptotic expansion of partial _v(rphi ) near {mathcal {I}}^+ generically contains logarithmic terms at second order, i.e. at order r^{-4}log r.

BRINGING THE ETHICS OF CHEMISTRY TO THE CLASSROOM AND THE EXISTENCE OF A DOMAIN OF KNOWLEDGE
 Whoever has attempted to bring ethical discussions on chemistry to a student audience of chemistry and related fields knows of the problem: in contrast to the relatively robust bioethical literature, the literature of chemical ethics is poor, disconnected, and scattered all around the place even in rare cases that it exists. This is an interesting fact, especially if one considers the extended moral (and moralist) discussions over chemistry and its products, and that a great part of the bioethical challenges of the last forty years or so have been generated not by biology (or medicine) per se, but from their marriage to chemistry and its practices. The lack of ethics of chemistry literature dictates to the lecturer unprecedented levels of creativity and demands extra workload to be effective –and this, in times where ethics courses, in general, have become a necessity. It is this gap that the editors of this book (Schummer and Børsen, Ethics of Chemistry: From Poison Gas to Climate Engineering, World Scientific, 2021) have detected, and they strove to create a collection of case studies to cover it. In the introduction of the volume, the editors state teaching as the first aim of its existence –and add the establishment of the ethics of chemistry as an autonomous discipline in its own right.
