Specialists in clinical psychology are increasingly leaving the public sector for the private sector, a situation causing concern for many. In this study we aimed to identify motives for this transition. A qualitative study using semi-structured interviews was conducted to answer our research question. Eight informants were selected, all specialists in clinical psychology who had left the public mental health sector to set up their own private practice. The findings from our analysis suggest that the informants had quite similar career-shifting motivations that included lack of trust, lack of workplace participation, insecurity and cross-pressures arising from conflicting demands. An overall interpretation of our data is that changes that have occurred in the public sector over time seem to have rendered the public sector less attractive than the private sector as a career option among specialists in clinical psychology.
