Determinants of household decision making autonomy among rural married women based on Ethiopian demography health survey: a multilevel analysis

IntroductionDecisions made at the household level have great impact on the welfare of the individual, the local community, as well as the welfare of the nation. Women’s independent decision on reproductive health increases women’s access to health information and utilization of reproductive services. This has great impact on maternal and child health outcomes. However, women in developing or low-income countries often have limited autonomy and control over their household decisions. Therefore the main purpose of this research project is to investigate the potential determinants of rural women’s household decision making autonomy.MethodsA multi level analysis was performed using the fourth Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey (EDHS) 2016 data set. A weighted sample of 8,565 married rural women was included in the final analysis. Women were considered to be autonomous if they made decisions alone or jointly with their husband in all three household decision components. It was dichotomized as yes = 1 and no = 0. Multico linearity and chi-square tests were checked and variables which did not fulfill the assumptions were excluded from the analysis. Four models were fitted. Variables with p-value ≤ 0.25 in the bi-variable multilevel logistic regression were included in the multivariable multilevel logistic regression. The Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) with a 95% confidence interval (95% CI) was computed. Variables with a P-value of less than 0.05 in the multi-variable multilevel logistic regression were declared as statistically significant predictors.ResultA total of 8,565 weighted participants involved. From the total respondents, 68.55% (CI: 67.5%, 69.5%) of women had decision making autonomy. wealth index (poor: AOR: 0.84; 95% CI: 0.72, 0.97 and middle: AOR: 0.85; 95% CI 0.73, 0.98), literacy (illiterate: AOR: 0.75; 95% CI: 0.66, 0.86), respondents working status (Not working; AOR 0.68; 95% CI; 0.60, 0.76) ,who decides on marriage (parents: AOR 0.76; 95% CI; 0.67, 0.87), and proportion of early marriage in the community (high proportion of early marriage AOR: 1.35; 95% CI; 1.10, 1.72).ConclusionWomen decision making autonomy was significantly determined by women economic participation (their wealth and their working status), women’s literacy, proportion of early marriage in the community and women’s involvement in decision of their marriage. Improving women’s economic participation and enhancing women’s participation to decide on their marriage will enhance women’s decision making autonomy.

Pengaruh Jumlah Penduduk, Proporsi Perempuan dan Pertumbuhan Ekonomi Terhadap Pengangguran di Provinsi Sumatera Utara

The study aims to analyze the impact of the population, the proportion of women, and economic growth on the unemployment rates in the province of North Sumatra during 2018–2021. The research data used secondary data from the Central Statistical Authority (BPS) of North Sumatra. The research method used the best model selection estimate test and processed the fixed-effect model (FEM), and the analysis technique used the regression analysis of panel data. The results show that the variable of the proportion of women has a negative influence on the number of dismissals. The results of this study can provide a basis for supporting policies that encourage women's economic participation. This may involve efforts to improve access to education and training for women and create better employment opportunities, while the population and economic growth have no influence on the unemployment rate in the province of North Sumatra in 2018–2021. The research can make a positive contribution to addressing the unemployment problem in the Province of North Sumatra and fostering sustainable development.

Pollution, governance, and women's work: Examining African female labour force participation in the face of environmental pollution and governance quality puzzles

In a rapidly changing world marked by environmental degradation and governance disparities, understanding their impact on African women's participation in the labour force remains a critical puzzle. This research seeks to unveil the intricate connections between pollution, governance quality, and women's economic engagement in Africa, shedding light on vital pathways to empower women, mitigate pollution's impact, and drive sustainable development in the region. Specifically, this study evaluates the impacts of governance quality and environmental pollution on gender economic outcomes in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) using data from 28 nations spanning 1996 to 2020. The study employs the dynamic panel threshold model. The key results reveal a negative and significant influence of ecological footprint on female economic participation. Furthermore, the dynamic threshold analysis reveals that environmental degradation undermines female labour engagement irrespective of the threshold level. The study also showed that below the threshold level, the interaction between governance quality variables and the ecological footprint exacerbates the negative impact of the ecological footprint on women's economic participation. Above the threshold level, the interaction between governance quality variables and the ecological footprint mitigates the negative impact. Overall, key recommendations like improved pollution control measures, inclusive governance, and effecting targeted policies and programs to empower women economically, among others, are proffered to contribute to the improvement in governance, environmental sustainability, and gender economic outcomes in SSA.

Role of Microfinance and Self Help Groups in Rural Women Empowerment – A Study of Two Sub district under Mahisagar District, Gujarat

Being the most important program in the SHG movement in India, NABARD started the pilot phase of SHG Bank Linkage Program in February 1992. This was the first example of a viable SHG financed directly by a commercial bank. Informal saving and borrowing groups of the poor were recognized as bankable customers. Soon after the SHG-bank linkage was in place, RBI advised commercial banks to consider lending to SHGs as part of their rural credit operations. Linking SHGs with the financial sector was good for both sides. Because banks were able to enter the money lending market, borrowers were lower income families, household costs were lower, and repayment rates were higher. By joining SHGs they were able to expand their operations with more credit and they had productive surplus funds for more credit. (Reddy and Maneck, 2005). This research paper attempts to examine the impact of microfinance in the context of poverty alleviation and socio-economic empowerment of women. Help empower women through microfinance by supporting women's economic participation, thus promoting gender equality and improving household welfare. To study the role of microfinance and self-help groups (SHGs) in women empowerment, Santrampur and Virpur sub district of Mahisagar district have been selected, for the present study a total of 20 SHG organizations have been selected from these two sub district and Out of these 20 SHGs, 150 respondents have been selected for the research. has been selected to start the job. An examination of willingness to participate and willingness to pay for a universal school food program in the Canadian context.

To examine parents'/caregivers' willingness to participate and willingness to pay (WTP) for a cost-shared school food program (SFP) and its associated factors. A quantitative survey design was used where WTP for a hypothetical SFP was elicited using a double-bounded dichotomous choice elicitation method. We used a double hurdle (logistic and truncated regression) model to examine WTP and positively or negatively associated factors. Saskatoon Public School Division elementary schools situated in high-, mid- or low-median-income neighbourhoods. Parents or caregivers of children attending grades 1 to grade 8 in the Saskatoon Public School Division elementary schools. 94 % respondents were willing to participate in a SFP while less than two-thirds of participants were willing to pay for such a program. Over 90 % respondents from all the socio-economic groups were willing to participate. Multiple household income earners, higher household income, higher number of children, household food security status and higher academic attainment of parents'/caregivers predicted greater willingness to pay. Mean willingness to pay was $4·68 (CAN), and households reporting moderate or severe food insecurity were likely to be willing to pay significantly less for a SFP. A cost-shared program might be financially sustainable in Canada if community characteristics such as household food insecurity status, economic participation of women and average household size are kept in mind while determining the price of the program.

Patriarchal Anxieties and Masculine Sexual Privilege in Contemporary Urban Mali

The neoliberal transformation of Mali's burgeoning capital city, Bamako, has undermined men's capacity to provide for their households and dependents even as it has boosted women's economic participation, leading senior males to express mounting anxieties over their declining economic power. As more men find themselves unable to assure economic stability for the women and children under their charge, many double down in their bid to exercise authority over women, particularly their wives. Some men use polygynous marriage as a means of performing certain masculine ideals, acquiring social prestige despite their diminished roles as breadwinners. Others find maintaining multiple female partners outside marriage similarly useful for offsetting their economic disadvantages. Based on ethnographic fieldwork and interviews with men and women in Bamako, this paper examines the extent to which modern masculinity in the city remains predicated on the control of women and their bodies.

A Cross-Country Examination of Internet Penetration and the Economic Participation of Women: The Influence of Social Capital and Gender Equality

One of the most widespread types of digital technology is the Internet which more than 5 billion people or 63.1% of the world’s population use as of April 2022. Previous studies have established that the relationship between digital technologies, such as the Internet, and labour market participation is worth investigating. While it is widely accepted that digital technologies help in women’s social and economic inclusion, the female labour participation force observed across countries remains slow and varied. There remains a limited investigation into the influence of internet penetration on the changes in the labour market outcomes for women. There is also scope for research on how the Internet affects women’s economic participation from a social and gender perspective. Prior research shows that social capital has been linked to labour allocation. Studies also show that variations in ideas on gender roles are significant for women’s decisions to find employment. We, therefore, investigate how widespread penetration of the Internet has influenced the economic participation of women in this study. We also investigate how social capital and gender equality play a role in the above relationship across countries. Our study uses archival data to conduct a panel analysis of 66 countries from 2014 to 2021. The study’s results show that the penetration of internet and the economic participation of women are positively associated. This study also found that the link between the penetration of internet and the economic participation of women is mediated by social capital. Gender equality was also found to moderate the above relationship, such that social capital had a stronger mediation influence on the association between internet penetration and women’s economic engagement in nations with comparatively lower levels of gender equality.

The association between women's economic participation and physical and/or sexual domestic violence against women: A case study for Turkey.

We test in how far women's economic participation can be associated with physical and/or sexual domestic violence against women in Turkey, by mobilizing the Survey "National Research on Domestic Violence against Women in Turkey" (wave 2014). Several studies found that economically active women have a similar, if not a higher risk of experiencing domestic violence than inactive women in Turkey, as well as in other emerging countries. We challenge these findings for Turkey by distinguishing between formal and informal labor market activities as well as between women who do not work because their partner does not allow them to and women who are inactive for other reasons. To increase the control for endogeneity in this cross-sectional setting, we apply an IV-approach based on cluster averages. We find that, while overall employment for women cannot be associated with a lower risk of experiencing domestic violence for women in Turkey, those women who participate in the formal labor market and those women who contribute at least the same as their partner to household income are less exposed to physical and/or sexual domestic violence than their counterparts. Distinguishing between formal and informal employment is thus important when it comes to investigate the association between women's economic activity and domestic violence. This is especially the case in a country like Turkey, which currently undergoes important socio-economic changes and where women in formal and informal employment have therefore very different socioeconomic backgrounds.

Associations between wives' and husbands' attitudes towards women's economic participation and depressive symptoms, poor subjective health, and unemployment status in married women: A Korean longitudinal study (2014–2020)

IntroductionPrevious research has investigated the relationship between an individuals' gender role attitudes (GRAs) and their psychological health. We hypothesized that holding traditional GRAs or having a husband who holds traditional GRAs may adversely affect a woman's health. MethodsData were obtained from a nationally representative longitudinal survey. Women's negative attitudes towards women's economic participation and husbands' negative attitudes towards their wives' economic participation were measured. The associations between the two and depressive symptoms, poor subjective health, and unemployment status in married women was estimated using a generalised estimating equation. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. ResultsWomen's negative attitudes towards women's economic participation was associated with depressive symptoms (OR [95% CI]: 1.19 [1.09–1.31]), poor subjective health (1.14 [1.04–1.25]) and unemployment status (1.10 [1.05–1.15]) in married women. In addition, there were significant associations between husbands' negative attitudes towards their wives working and depressive symptoms (1.41 [1.23–1.60]), poor subjective health (1.69 [1.48–1.92]), and unemployment (1.80 [1.69–1.92]) in their wives. The effect was strongest when both wives and their husbands have negative attitudes. In addition, the models considering cumulative years of negative attitudes showed that wives holding negative attitudes towards women's economic participation for 3 years or more was associated with depressive symptoms (1.70 [1.42–2.04]), poor subjective health (1.28 [1.04–1.57]), and unemployment status (1.39 [1.22–1.58]). Similarly, husbands' holding 3 years or more of negative attitudes towards their wives' economic participation was associated with depressive symptoms (1.32 [1.02–1.72])), poor subjective health (1.81 [1.40–2.35]), and unemployment status (9.02 [7.97–10.21]) in their wives. ConclusionsOur results show that one's own or one's husband's attitude towards women's economic participation affects not only the employment status of married women but also their mental and subjective health. Policymakers should implement policies that encourage positive attitudes towards women's economic activities.

Neurovascular disease in Switzerland: 10-year trends show non-traditional risk factors on the rise and higher exposure inwomen.

Background and purposeEffective risk factor modification is the prerequisite to prevent neurovascular disease such as stroke or vascular dementia. Non‐traditional vascular risk factors (nt‐vrfs) including stress significantly add to the risk of neurovascular disease arising from traditional vascular risk factors (t‐vrfs). In order to discover sex‐specific changes that may underlie previously reported inclines in the prevalence of neurovascular and cardiovascular disease in women, 10‐year trends in the prevalence of vrfs in Switzerland were assessed.MethodsAnonymized data from 22,134 participants (51% women) of the governmental Swiss Health Survey, performed every 5 years (2007, 2012 and 2017), were obtained. Epidemiological parameters, t‐vrfs and nt‐vrfs were analyzed in a cross‐sectional study design.ResultsOver the observation period, the number of women having full‐time jobs increased considerably (2007 38%, 2012 39%, 2017 44%). This was accompanied by a substantial rise in the prevalence of nt‐vrfs in women and men including stress at work (2007, not available; 2012 women/men 58%/60%; 2017 women/men 66%/65%), low locus of control (women/men: 2007 21%/19%, 2012 22%/19%, 2017 25%/22%) and sleep disorders (women/men: 2007 30%/22%, 2012 28%/20%, 2017 32%/26%). Amongst t‐vrfs, only the prevalence of obesity and hypercholesterolemia increased over time in both sexes, whilst other t‐vrfs remained stable (hypertension [27%], diabetes [5%]) or decreased (smoking [9.4 cigarettes/day]).ConclusionsA rise in women's economic participation alongside a higher affection with nt‐vrfs in the female Swiss population emphasizes the need to improve vascular risk stratification and implement effective preventive measures for neurovascular and cardiovascular disease.

GENDER AND EQUALITY IN LATIN AMERICA-CARIBBEAN; EVOLUTION 2006-2021. STRATEGIC RECOMMENDATIONS.

Gender economic equality in Latin America-Caribbean is behind Sub-Saharan region, limiting regional competitiveness and social justice. We found a negative regional correlation between women political empowerment and economic participation, being this associated to economic growth, democracy index and wage equality. We recommend authorities to focus on women economic participation, potentiate fiscal redistribution policies, improve democracy, governance and competitiveness, changing from one sex (women) to gender (social) policies for equality, reduction of voluntary education segregation with early age education intervention and support family and care to alleviate the social charges associates to being woman.

Contribution of Education in Women's Participation in Social Sectors A Study

Women are the backbone of the family. Our all-round development depends on their progress. Educated women not only improve the family but also help in making the society cultured and progressive. Progress of women's education is essential for this society and nation. Today's women are being able to change the fate of the country. Today women are filled with the spirit of new consciousness and she is contributing as much as possible in every area of the society.Women's education discharges the most important illiteracy in the socio-economic and political empowerment of women. It has been seen that educated and financially self-sufficient women act as the deciding factor in building the size and economic status of the family. Through education, women become a better housewife on the one hand and a better economic agent on the other. Unfortunately, in India's rural and semi-urban environment and low social levels, women's education, resulting in economic empowerment, is found to be of very low level. The present paper makes a simple analysis of the role of women in women's education, women's economic participation and family size in a semi-urban environment. Based on the size of the information obtained by the survey, it has been concluded that the condition of women's education in the studied semi-urban environment is remarkable. Lack of education limits women's economic power, and there is a direct relationship between education and family size.

From "nobody's clapping for us" to "bad moms": COVID-19 and the circle of childcare in Canada.

The COVID‐19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of childcare to national economies in general and women's economic participation in particular, spurring renewed interest in childcare policy in many countries that have implemented lockdowns. This paper adopts a circle of care framework to analyzes how COVID‐19 has affected paid childcare, unpaid childcare and other paid work, and the relationship between these sectors. Analysis is grounded in the lived experiences of parents and childcare educators, documented through 16 semi‐structured interviews during the initial lockdown (March–June 2020) in British Columbia, Canada. Experiences from educators suggest their safety was not prioritized, and that their contributions were undervalued and went unrecognized. Mothers, who provided the majority of unpaid care, not only lost income due to care demands, but struggled to access necessities, with some reporting increased personal insecurity. Those attempting to work from home also experienced feelings of guilt and distress as they tried to manage the triple burden. Similarities of experiences across the circle of care suggest the COVID‐19 childcare policy response in BC Canada downloaded care responsibilities on to women without corresponding recognition or support, causing women to absorb the costs of care work, with potential long‐term negative effects on women's careers and well‐being, as well as on the resilience of the circle of care. Pandemic recovery and preparedness policies that aim to promote gender equality must consider all sectors of the circle of care and the relationships between them.

GENDER EQUALITY IN TUNISIA: CURRENT TRENDS

Tunisia has come a long way towards achieving gender equality and remains a prominent example to other Arab countries in this experience. Meanwhile, Tunisia still takes only modest positions in international rankings on various indexes measuring gender gap. This work examines, with the help of a comparative-historical method, the formation of the women's movement in Tunisia and the development of legislation on gender equality. Then, through statistical data the author outlines the extent of women's economic, social, and political participation, and, finally, referring to the "concept of representation" by Hanna F. Pitkin (1967), the author looks at the pre-election programs of political parties that won the 2019 parliamentary elections, in order to assess the perception of the problem of women's emancipation in Tunisian society on the whole. As a result of the research, the author comes to the conclusion that, despite progressive legislative framework guaranteeing women's rights, the mass consciousness of Tunisians maintains a set of ideas and norms on gender inequality generated by Islamic tradition and fostering the discrepancy, first in the existing legislation and the objective reality, and secondly, between the rules of family law containing elements of Sharia, and the provisions of the Constitution, as well as the accepted international obligations.

Investigating the economic visibility and contribution of UK women in agriculture through a systematic review of international literature

The agricultural sector in developed countries has been experiencing a growth in the percentage of women, yet very little economic research documents the role and contribution of farm women across these countries. Through an interdisciplinary systematic literature review of 184 international peer-reviewed, English-language studies between 1970 and 2020 we investigate the economic contribution and visibility of women working in the agricultural sector in the United Kingdom (UK). Differences within farm women as a group are explored and used to develop a framework characterising the different economic classifications of farm women across a spectrum of economic contribution and visibility. A comparison of the economic contributions of farm men and women also reveals key differences between farming practices and outcomes. As such, the study reveals key barriers to women's economic participation and visibility in agriculture to be associated with access to land, education and organisations. These factors are evaluated in the context of wider policy. The outcomes of this study increase understanding of factors shaping women's economic contribution and visibility in UK agriculture and will inform further research investigating female participation in agricultural business management and decision making. As the UK formulates its own domestic agricultural acts, UK-wide research will be needed to inform policy and overcome barriers facing women in farming.

Women economic participation in novel Tentang Kamu by Tere Liye

The issue of the women’s role in the public sphere has been widely carried out in literary research. However, research on women's participation specifically on economic issues by looking at its theoretical and empirical aspects is still something that is very rarely carried out in literary research. The purpose of this study is to explore in more detail about women's participation in the economy. By using the lens of women's thinking and their participation in the economic field in the concept of women economic participation from Jacqui True, this research focuses on this issue. The method used is analyzing the content of the story that has been done by collecting data by collecting words, sentences, paragraphs related to women's participation in the economy. Furthermore, the data that have been found are analyzed using descriptive analysis methods. The descriptive method of analysis was carried out in several stages. The first stage is data collection which is done by collecting the aspects of women's participation in the economy in general in the data table. From the data table, it is classified according to the economic participation patterns found. The next stage is data analysis by dialogue data from the novel with the theory of women's participation in the economy. The results of this study indicate that women are able to get out of the crisis with their own efforts and hard work. Women also have an important role in the economic sector because they are able to create their own business opportunities so that they can improve their life.

The political implication of women and industrialisation in Africa

This study examines the effect of political implications of women on industrialisation in Africa. The results after controlling for cross-sectional dependency show that women political implication Granger causes industrialisation in Africa. Besides, the Fixed effect Driscoll/Kraay standard error estimator reveal that women political empowerment negatively affect industrialisation in Africa. These negative effects are nullified by high economic freedom and high female economic participation in the economy. The investment freedom thresholds require for the negative net effects to be nullified are 52.30469, 55.51639, 49.324895, and 55.594059 respectively for the women political empowerment index, women civil liberty, women political participation and women civil society participation interactions; while when women economic participation rates of 43.0777, 35.82, and 46.9 are attained for women political empowerment index, women civil liberty and women civil society participation respectively, complementary policies are needed for a positive effect on industrialisation. The study implores policy makers to improve on the economic freedom of the countries and to elaborate on policies that favour women economic inclusion, if policy towards political inclusion is foreseen in the industrialisation agenda.

This article assesses the link between the four pillars of gender equality and extreme poverty in sub-Saharan Africa. Accordingly, the objective of the paper is to empirically examine whether the four pillars of gender equality, namely women’s health, women education, political participation of women and economic participation facilitate extreme poverty alleviation in sub-Saharan Africa. Data were collected from the World Bank development indicators and World Economic Forum Global Gender Gap Index for 25 sub-Saharan African countries whose data appear on both indexes for three years into the SDGs era. Th e paper applied a quantitative approach with secondary data on poverty gap index drawn from the World Economic Forum Poverty Gap Index for sub-Saharan Africa. Data for twenty-fi ve sub-Saharan African countries were analysed using the fi xed-eff ect panel data regression approach using the Hauseman model selection test. Findings from the analysis indicate that, ceteris paribus, an increase in the threegender equity variables namely economic participation of women, education of women and political participation and leadership of women in sub-Saharan Africa has a signifi cant potential to reduce extreme poverty in sub-Saharan Africa within the sample of study. Since the fi ndings of this study have shown that extreme poverty can be reduced through increased women participation in economic activity, education and leadership, the SDG of poverty alleviation can be improved in sub-Saharan Africa through better government provision of economic, educational and leadership opportunities for women such as providing women with free-interest small business start-up funds, free education for women and supporting women to ascend and survive in political and leadership positions in sub-Saharan Africa through a balanced quota for female leadership positions. Given that the women’s health variable did not prove to be signifi cant on extreme poverty, further research is recommended to separate the health variable into rural health and urban health variables in order to examine the possibility that either of the health clusters might contribute signifi cantly to reducing extreme poverty. Th is paper contributes to existing literature by providing an empirical evidence to show that gender equality in sub-Saharan Africa is a viable policy strategy for achieving the SDGs 2030 Agenda of extreme poverty eradication in sub-Saharan Africa; the paper also provides empirical model for future study.

Does Gender Status Translate into Economic Participation of Women? Certain Evidence from Kerala

Many indicators of gender inclusiveness show that Kerala has been much ahead of other states in ensuring the welfare of females. It needs to be reiterated that in both education and health, women in Kerala stand quietly at the receiving ends as the beneficiaries rather than the agents of economic and social change. The women’s inclusive way of progress does not necessarily confine itself to the widening of education and health opportunities for women. Still, it largely and more positively depends on the effective participation of women in economic activities. It is disheartening that if we probe into the status of women from these yardsticks of ‘active’ economic participation, the picture of gender equality appears more discouraging in Kerala, which has been acclaimed as a ‘model’ for not only other states in the country but also for other countries in the world. A secular decline in the Work Participation Rate for women in the labor market clearly shows that education does not aid women to add themselves to the labor market. Economists and sociologists offer many plausible explanations for this absconding nature of educated and skilled women from the labor market. The real gender inclusion and women empowerment will be fulfilled only when women start actively engaging in productive fields using their knowledge and entitlements.
