Overcoming challenges into miraculous motherhood: successful pregnancy outcomes in patients with SLE: A case series

Systemic lupus erythematosus is a multisystem autoimmune disorder associated with multiple positive antibodies. Reproductive age group women have been found to develop SLE more commonly so than males, and pregnancy is associated with an increased rate of flare ups. The rate of pregnancy loss has decreased from 43% to 17% in recent years due to optimization of treatment and management during pre-pregnancy period. Recent studies have reported that both maternal and foetal outcome are favourable if SLE has been quiescent for at least 6 months prior to pregnancy. The effects of SLE over pregnancy and impact of pregnancy over SLE patients can be managed by optimization of pre-pregnancy treatment and management in antenatal period and follow-up. A multi-disciplinary team approach by an obstetrician, medical specialist and paediatrician for a successful management. Management of SLE to be continued in post-partum period and risk of flares and thrombotic events can be avoided by optimization of treatment in post-partum period till 6 weeks after delivery. Comprehensive maternal and new-born care has improved survival and quality of life outcomes in pregnant patients with SLE. Here, we present a series of three cases of SLE in pregnancy that had successful obstetric outcomes with an interdisciplinary management plan.

Determinants of pre-conception care awareness among young and middle-aged women in the Morena district of Madhya Pradesh

Pre-conception care pertains to any preventive, promotive, and curative interventions for improving the health outcomes of women. Contrary to the growing burden of intergenerational transmission of chronic diseases, women lacked awareness and access to services for pre-conception care. Considering this, we conducted a cross-sectional study to assess the awareness, perceptions, and practices of pre-conception care among women from young and middle-aged groups in the Morena district of Madhya Pradesh. It was a cross-sectional study conducted with 383 women of reproductive age group (15-40 years) using a structured and pre-validated quantitative questionnaire. Out of 383 women, 171 belonged to the younger age group (15-24 years) and 212 to the middle-aged group (25-40 years). More than 50% of women had not heard of pre-conception care, and more than 90% of women in both groups had low dietary diversity. Middle-aged women had higher pre-conception care compared to younger women (βeta coefficient (95% Confidence Interval); p-value: 0.49 (0.03, 0.95); 0.03).

Determinants of birth preparedness and complication readiness practice among reproductive-age women in Africa a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Safe motherhood programs must include both readiness for complications and childbirth. Birth preparedness and complication readiness (BPCR) is a comprehensive approach that helps resolve delays in deciding to seek care for obstetric problems. To identify the determinants of BPCR practice among reproductive age group women in Africa. Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) were followed and databases such as MEDLINE, PubMed, Scopus, Hinari, Google Scholar, and Web of Science were used to find the available studies. Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) with 95% Confidence Interval (CI) was used to identify associated factors. I2 statistics, funnel plot, and Egger test were used to assess the studies' heterogeneity and publication bias. In this review, a total of 32 studies with 17,787 sample sizes were included. Knowledge of BPCR (AOR = 2.12, 95% CI: 1.44, 3.13), knowledge of danger signs during pregnancy (AOR = 1.60; 95% CI: 1.37, 1.88), Knowledge of labor and delivery danger signs (AOR = 1.44; 95% CI: 1.28, 1.62), Knowledge of postpartum danger signs (AOR = 1.40; 95% CI: 1.21, 1.63), urban residency (AOR = 1.32; 95% CI: 1.03, 1.70), Antenatal Care follow-up (AOR = AOR = 1.52;95% CI:1.42, 1.63), history of stillbirth (AOR = 1.59; 95% CI: 1.36, 1.86), parity (AOR = 1.76; 95% CI: 1.16, 2.66) and secondary or higher educational status (AOR = 1.51: 95% CI: 1.35, 1.68) were the determinants of BPCR practice. BPCR practice among African women of reproductive age has been greatly affected by antenatal care visits, urban residency, knowledge of danger during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum, history of stillbirth, primiparity, and secondary or higher education. Focused interventions that address the identified factors may enhance BPCR practices and maternal health outcomes in Africa.

Peculiarities of the course of gestation in women with a history of reproductive loss

Aim. Тo assess the frequency of extragenital pathology, features of obstetric and gynecological history and the course of pregnancy in women with a history of reproductive loss. Materials and methods. The study was conducted on the basis of the Municipal non-profit enterprise “Maternity house No. 9” of the Zaporizhzhia City Council with the involvement of 75 pregnant women with one reproductive loss in history. The control group consisted of 30 women without a history of reproductive loss. Women who had reproductive losses were divided into 2 groups. Group I (main group) includes 38 pregnant women who registered for pregnancy and began their participation in this study after the start of a full-scale war on the territory of Ukraine. II (comparison) group included 37 women who were registered for pregnancy before the start of the full-scale war. It should be noted that 17 pregnant women (44.7 %) had the status of an internally displaced person. The average age of women in group I was 30.10 ± 5.86 years, in group II – 28.80 ± 6.07 years, and 26.50 ± 4.95 years in the control group. The anamnesis data and features of the course of gestation were studied in all patients. Management of pregnancy and childbirth of women was carried out in accordance with the current Orders of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. Variational and statistical processing of the results was carried out using the Statistica 13 program. Results. According to the results of the study, it was established that the frequency of extragenital pathology in women with one reproductive loss was higher, compared to women who had no such experience. Diseases of the cardiovascular and urinary systems occupy a leading place in this category of women. According to obstetric and gynecological anamnesis, a significant predominance among women of I and II groups of diseases of the reproductive system, compared to women of the control group, was established. Also, in the corresponding groups, a high frequency of miscarriage was established both in the period up to 12 weeks (28.95 % in the I group, 43.2 % in the II group against 6.67 % in the control group), and in the period of 12–22 weeks (34.20 % in the I group, 29.73 % in the II group vs. 13.33 % in the control group). Conclusions. Based on the conducted analysis, a high frequency of pregnancy complications was established for pregnant women who had a history of one reproductive loss. This contingent of women also has a high frequency of extragenital and gynecological concomitant pathology. Such results make it possible to assume a connection between the presence of one reproductive loss in women in the anamnesis and gestational complications of the next pregnancy.

Neuroendocrine tumours and pregnancy: Real-world data from an European Neuroendocrine Tumour Centre of Excellence.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) arise from the diffuse endocrine system and have been considered to be rare. However, the incidence and prevalence of these tumours have increased in recent years, and they are being seen in younger patients including women in the reproductive age group. Due to the paucity of data, diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in managing such tumours during pregnancy can be challenging to both treating physicians and patients. This article describes the experience and outcomes of managing pregnant women with NEN at a European Neuroendocrine Tumour Society (ENETS) Centre of Excellence. In this retrospective analysis, we evaluated a total of 22 pregnancies in 18 pregnant women with concurrent diagnoses of NENs who were managed at Royal Free Hospital ENETS Centre of Excellence throughout their pregnancy. These were identified from our tumour registry of 3500 NEN patients between 2015 and 2023. Cross-sectional imaging (computed tomography (CT)/magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)), pre- and post-pregnancy, for each patient was reviewed by an experienced radiologist. Tumour growth rate (TGR) was calculated using the formula: TGR = 100 × [exp (TG) - 1]; TG. [3 × log (D2/D1)]/time (months), where D1 is the tumour size at date 1; D2 is the tumour size at date 2; and time (months) = (Date 2 - Date 1 + 1)/30.44. Tumour growth rate pre-conception (TGRpc) and tumour growth rate post-partum (TGRpp) were calculated for each patient. In a sub-group of patients, positivity for oestrogen and progesterone receptors were analysed on the tumour tissue to evaluate whether the presence of these receptors affected tumour progression during the pregnancy. We also reviewed the pregnancy outcome in patients treated with somatostatin analogues during pregnancy. We analysed the data of a total 22 pregnancy encounters in 18 women: 15 pregnancies (68%) preceded the diagnosis of the NEN, whereas the diagnosis of NEN was made during pregnancy or in the post-partum period in 5 (23%) and 2 (9%) pregnancies respectively. Eight patients (44%) had a diagnosis of a pancreatic NEN, whereas 5 (28%) were diagnosed with mid-gut NENs, and a further 5 at other sites. The majority of the patients (n = 12, 67%) had evidence of metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis. Most pregnancies had a successful outcome (n = 19, 86%), whereas 3 patients (14%) had miscarriages in the 1st trimester. Five patients in total of 6 pregnancies were treated with somatostatin analogues as monotherapy during the pregnancy, and all of them had stable disease after pregnancy. All of them delivered healthy babies without any side effects or complications due to therapy. The average TGRpc was -0.8% (n = 5) and the average TGRpp was +0.96% (n = 6); 2 patients who did not have suitable targets for calculation of TGRpc developed new lesions suggesting disease progression. Moreover, 2 of the 4 patients who have had both pre-conception and post-pregnancy scans showed an increase in TGRpp compared to TGRpc. The management of NENs during pregnancy should be multidisciplinary with an individualised approach to each patient. Somatostatin analogues appear to be safe during pregnancy, though further robust studies are needed. Pregnancy per se may accelerate tumour progression, and patients should be counselled regarding this possibility.

Determinants of self-reported sexually transmitted infections among reproductive age women in Senegal: evidenced by Senegal demographic and health survey.

Globally, access to sexual and reproductive health is a significant public health issue for women of the reproductive age group. Senegal is a low-income country with limited access to reproductive health services, such as in the prevention and treatment of STIs. The prevention and treatment of STIs is one of the goals set by the government to decrease reproductive health-related morbidity and mortality among women. So, the main objective of this research was to evaluate the prevalence's and determinant of self-reported sexually transmitted infections among reproductive-age women. Data from the 2023 Senegal Demographic and Health Survey datasets were used for secondary data analysis. A total of 16,583 women of reproductive age participated in the study. Bivariate analysis was employed in order to select the factors for multivariate analysis. In the multivariate analysis, variables with p < 0.05 significance levels were considered to be significant predictors of sexually transmitted infections among reproductive-age women. Finally, the percentage and odd ratio, together with their 95% confidence intervals, were reported. The prevalence of sexually transmitted infection among women was 3.21% with a 95 CI. [2.95-3.49] in the last 12 months. Being between the age range of 20 and 44 years old; attending higher education [AOR: 2.70, 95% CI (1.74, 4.19); P = 0.0001]; women who were never in union [AOR: 0.09, 95% CI (0.046, 0.17); P = 0.001] were positively associated with sexually transmitted infections among women. In contrast to this, living in Louga [AOR: 0.41, 95% CI (0.23,0.69); P = 0.001]; Fatick [AOR: 0.33, 95% CI (0.18,0.61); P = 0.0001]; Kolda [AOR: 0.23, 95% CI (0.11,0.49); P = 0.0001]; Kedougou [AOR: 0.34, 95% CI (0.17,0.68); P = 0.002]; and Sedhiou [AOR: 0.43, 95% CI (0.23,0.79); P = 0.007] and women who had history terminated pregnancy [AOR: 1.27, 95% CI (1.03,1.58); P = 0.023] were negatively associated with sexually transmitted infections among women. Women's sexually transmitted infection has been associated with sociodemographic and geographic determinants such as the age of the woman, region, educational status, marital status, and history of terminated pregnancy. Therefore, to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted infections among women, the governments of Senegal and other concerned stakeholders should give special attention to women by addressing sociodemographic and geographic determinants.

Analysis of anticipatory and compensatory postural adjustment in women of different age groups using surface electromyography.

Postural balance is crucial for daily activities, relying on the coordination of sensory systems. Balance impairment, common in the elderly, is a leading cause of mortality in this population. To analyze balance, methods like postural adjustment analysis using electromyography (EMG) have been developed. With age, women tend to experience reduced mobility and greater muscle loss compared to men. However, few studies have focused on postural adjustments in women of different ages using EMG of the lower limbs during laterolateral and anteroposterior movements. This gap could reveal a decrease in muscle activation time with aging, as activation time is vital for postural adjustments. This study aimed to analyze muscle activation times in women of different ages during postural adjustments. Thirty women were divided into two groups: young and older women. A controlled biaxial force platform was used for static and dynamic balance tests while recording lower limb muscle activity using EMG. Data analysis focused on identifying muscle activation points and analyzing postural adjustment times. Results showed significant differences in muscle activation times between the two groups across various muscles and platform tilt conditions. Younger women had longer muscle activation times than older women, particularly during laterolateral platform inclinations. In anteroposterior movements, older women exhibited longer activation times compared to their laterolateral performance, with fewer differences between the groups. Overall, older women had shorter muscle activation times than younger women, suggesting a potential indicator of imbalance and increased fall risk.

The importance of nutrition and overweight as a risk factor in family medicine

Improper nutrition leads to changes in the body that are not only an aesthetic problem, but also lead to chronic diseases. The goals of the research are to analyze knowledge, habits and attitudes about nutrition and knowledge about obesity, to determine the body mass index (BMI) of all respondents, to analyze the connection between nutrition, excess body weight and the frequency of chronic non-communicable diseases. The study was cross-sectional epidemiological, descriptive-analytical, was conducted on a sample of 200 respondents of patients Family medicine, Public Health Center of the Sarajevo Canton. The survey was conducted by interviewing respondents using a modified questionnaire, made up of 27 questions. Analyzing the results, it was determined that the respondents' knowledge of nutrition is satisfactory, but that the majority of respondents (121) have a BMI over 25. For men in the age group of 46-55 years, the average BMI is 29.3, and for women in the same age group, it is 27. 5, which shows that they do not apply their own knowledge about nutrition. The majority of respondents (32%) whose BMI is over 25 have one or more chronic non-communicable diseases. Most respondents stated that they get information about proper nutrition through the media, although many of them suffer from some chronic diseases, they do not get information at the health center. In the family doctor's clinic, it is very important to recognize excess body weight, bad eating habits of patients in time, plan a prevention strategy, and prevent the further development of chronic diseases with professional counseling.

Reasons for contraceptive discontinuation among women of reproductive age in Kano, Nigeria: A qualitative study

Women’s attempts to achieve their desired levels of fertility are hindered when they stop using contraceptives, which could lead to unwanted pregnancies. This study aimed to assess reasons for contraceptive discontinuation among women of reproductive age in urban and rural areas of Kano State, Nigeria. Qualitative data were collected in urban and rural communities of Kano State in February to May, 2022 from women of reproductive age group, their male partners, family planning service providers, and community and religious leaders. Focus group discussions (FGD), and key informant interviews (KII), using multi-stage sampling methods explored previous experience with contraceptive use, fertility consequences and reasons for contraceptive discontinuation. Following data collection, digitally recorded data were transcribed verbatim, translated, and coded using thematic analysis through an inductive approach. Study reported the high discontinuation rates and identified side effects as the primary reason for discontinuation, with injectable contraceptives being the most commonly discontinued method. Other reported reasons for contraceptive discontinuation by respondents in both urban and rural groups were: method failure, intention to get pregnant, health concerns, husband disapproval, methods not available, inconvenience to use and interference with body structure or functions. The high contraceptive discontinuation poses significant risks of unintended pregnancies and unsafe abortions, thereby increasing maternal morbidity and mortality rates in Kano State. These consequences emphasize the need for family planning interventions that incorporate quality of care in service provision to address contraceptive discontinuation. Engaging men and other social influencers in family planning programs and services will help gather support for contraception, rather than focusing exclusively on women.

Determinants of willingness to vaccinate against HPV among adults: an Italian cross-sectional study

Abstract Background In Italy, heterosexual males over the age of 18 do not participate in the free-of-charge HPV vaccine offer, nor do women over the age of 26, with regional differences; however, they can vaccinate for a fee. This survey aims to assess the vaccination readiness of the 18-40 year old population group, their perceived need with respect to the vaccine, and the determinants of the vaccination choice. Methods A questionnaire-based cross-sectional study targeting the general population in the 18-40 age group has been ongoing since March 2024. Recruitment occurs through social media and flyers. Demographic characteristics, social determinants, deprivation index by area via HAZ (health action zone) method (SR: -15;25), risk factors, main barriers to vaccination are assessed. Our main outcome is HPV vaccination willingness. People already vaccinated were excluded from the analysis. Descriptive and logistic regression analyses were performed with Jamovi. Results Our preliminary results included 159 individuals of whom 57.2% would like to receive HPV vaccine. The main characteristics of the sample were: median age 30 years (IQR:26.5;34), 47.2% female gender, median deprivation index 3.7 (IQR:-0.2;7.1), 75% working, 11.9% from the LGBTQ+ community. Regarding barriers, 31.9% rated fatigue in accessing the vaccine as significant, 10.4% feared a risk in receiving the vaccine. Among the people who did not want to vaccinate or did not know, 75% would do so by paying less than the normal amount, 21.6% if free, and 3.4% would not vaccinate anyway. Vaccination willingness was positively associated with female gender (OR:3.1; p = 0.026) and belonging to the LGBTQ+ community (OR:10.0; p:0.050) and negatively associated with working status (OR:0.19; p = 0.013). Conclusions Socioeconomic barriers appeared to play a significant role in the choice to vaccinate. Policies to reduce economic barriers could increase vaccination in an uncovered but still potentially sexually active population. Key messages • Coverage of HPV vaccine is not yet at optimal thresholds, yet people excluded from free vaccination programs could benefit from vaccination incentive policies. • Vaccination intention among heterosexual men is significantly lower than among women in the same age group, a symptom that there would still be room for awareness-raising interventions on the issue.

Histopathological pattern in endometrial biopsies in reproductive age group and Post-menopausal women.

To identify and analyse the different types and frequencies of morphological pattern in endometrial biopsies along with their associated diagnoses across different age groups. The cross-sectional study was conducted at the Histopathology Section of the Dow Diagnostics Reference and Research Laboratory, Dow University Health Sciences, Karachi, from October 2022 to October 2023. Data was obtained from pre-existing medical record of samples of endometrial biopsies. Open Epi sample size calculator is used for the estimation of sample size. The patients were divided into two aged-based groups; reproductive age ≤45 years in group 1 and postmenopause age ≥46 years in group 2. The histological diagnosis was made by a consultant histopathologist. Of the 430 endometrial biopsies 222(51.6%) were in group 1 and 208(48.4%) were in group 2. In both groups, the most common finding was polyps 271(63%). Malignant changes were found in 12(5.7%) group 2 cases compared to 4(1.8%) group 1 cases. The most common endometrial lesion in both age groups was endometrial polyp. Malignant changes were seen more in postmenopausal women compared to those in the reproductive age group.

A study of Belarusian women’s perceptions of safety and its relationships with victimization and social gender

The differences between Belarusian women’s perceptions of safety, as well as the links between these perceptions with victimization and social gender have been analyzed. The purpose of the study is to identify the peculiarities of women’s perceptions of safety, considering its relationship with victimization and social gender. Methods used: analysis and synthesis, method of interview and psychological testing, results processing and generalization, tabular, etc. The psychological safety perceptions assessment has been studied with the help of N.E. Kharlamenkova’s psychological safety questionnaire and victimization with the help of V.P. Sheinov’s methodology, to determine gender-role peculiarities the masculinity-femininity scale from the Freiburg Personality Inventory (FPI) was used. The sample included 590 women aged 18 to 60 years old. Differences in perceptions of psychological safety among women of different age groups have been revealed. It has been shown that for women security is associated with such concepts as peace in their country, reliability, health, and control of the situation. Adult women also associate safety with compliance with norms and rules, possession of information, and a reliable companion. For young girls, security is also associated with a sense of comfort, trust, and lack of anxiety. Perceptions of safety differ between feminine and masculine women. It has been shown that feminine-type women associate safety with their qualities and abilities, and masculine-type women associate it with the attitude to solving personal safety problems with the help of psychological strength and orientation to independence.

Aortic Aneurysm with and without Dissection and Concomitant Atherosclerosis-Differences in a Retrospective Study.

Thoracic aortic aneurysm is a latent disease with a high risk of death. Today, as data are accumulating, an estimation of the differences in thoracic aneurysm in men and women of different age groups is required. The present study evaluated the type of atherosclerotic aortic lesions in males and females at different ages regarding the presence or absence of aortic dissection. A retrospective analysis of clinical and morphological data of 43 patients with thoracic aortic aneurysm was carried out. Patients were divided into groups based on the presence or absence of thoracic aneurysm dissection. Our results of a comparative analysis of the age of study participants showed that patients with aneurysm dissection were younger than patients without dissection. In the subgroup of patients with aortic dissection, the mean age was 50.6 years old, and in patients without aortic dissection, the mean age was 55.0 years old. When conducting a frequency analysis using Fisher's exact test, it was found that in men and women aneurysm dissection was not associated with atherosclerotic lesions of the aorta. In women and men, aneurysm dissection was not associated with stage of atherosclerotic lesions of the aorta regardless of age; no statistically significant differences were found between the groups with and without aneurysm dissection (p > 0.05). Dissection of the thoracic aneurysm developed in the absence of severe atherosclerosis of the thoracic aorta. Only 18.6% men and women possessed atherosclerotic plaques of types IV and V.

Running Plus Strength Training Positively Affects Muscle Strength and Quality in Both Younger (Below 50 Years Old) and Older (Above 50 Years Old) Women.

Sarcopenia is a muscular disease characterized by loss of muscular strength and function, affecting mainly women, and associated with increased mortality risk. The aim of this study was to compare active women with inactive women of different age groups regarding muscle mass, strength, and muscle quality. This study included 147 women (85 runners and 62 inactive), divided into <50 and ≥50 years old. Participants were evaluated for knee flexor and extensor peak torque (PT), body composition, and training habits. For knee extensor muscles, there was an age group effect (F(2.146) = 40.5; p < 0.001) on absolute PT (Nm); an age group effect (F(2.146) = 44.1; p < 0.001) and a physical activity group effect (F(2.146) = 113.0; p < 0.001) on PT adjusted by body mass (Nm/kg); and an age group effect (F(2.146) = 36.9; p < 0.001) and a physical activity group effect (F(2.146) = 6.1; p = 0.014) on PT adjusted by lean mass (Nm/kgLM). There was no interaction effect. In both age groups, active women had greater strength and higher muscle quality than inactive women, but the difference in strength, muscle mass, and muscle quality between younger and older women were the same among runners and inactive women.

Exploring the Socio-personal Factors Associated with the Prevalence of Symptoms of Reproductive Tract Infections among Sexually Active Married Women in Ernakulam District of Kerala, India

Abstract Background: Reproductive Tract Infections (RTIs)/Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are the main cause of maternal mortality and morbidity in India. The prevalence of the symptoms of RTIs was found to be very high in community-based studies. However only a few studies have explored the factors associated with it. This study aims to determine the socio-personal factors associated with the prevalence of symptoms of RTIs among sexually active married women in Ernakulam district of Kerala. Material and Methods: The study adopted a cross-sectional approach and was conducted among 640 married women in the reproductive age group. Results: The prevalence of the symptoms of RTIs was found to be 56.9% and about 60.16% of them had experienced multiple symptoms. Multivariate analysis showed that those women living in the urban areas (OR: 0.49, 95% CI: 0.334, 0.719), having no previous history of obstetric/gynecological risk factors (OR: 1.89, 95% CI: 1.119, 3.19) and using both clothes and sanitary pads interchangeably during menstruation (OR: 0.46, 95% CI: 0.282, 0.734) were found to be at less risk of contracting RTIs. Conclusion: The use of sanitary pads along with cloth pads can be enhanced rather than only using reusable cloths during menstruation. Also, efforts to improve the reproductive health of the women and reduce the obstetric/gynaecological risk factors should be devised to curtail the peak of RTIs.

Underreporting of violence against women: an analysis of two data sources.

This article aims to estimate the underreporting of violence against women (VAW) in the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN), based on data from the National Survey of Health (NSH), in Brazil and subnational units (SU). This work was an ecological study using SINAN and NSH, both from 2019. In SINAN, reports of sexual, physical, and psychological VAW, aged 18 years or older, were selected. In the NSH, women of the same age group who reported psychological, physical, or sexual violence, and who had sought health care due to consequences of the violence were selected. SINAN underreporting was calculated in reference to the NSH's estimated population, for Brazil and each SU. Underreporting of VAW in Brazil was 98.5%, 75.9%, and 89.4% for psychological, physical, and sexual violence, respectively. The North and Northeast states presented the lowest reporting rates among the states. VAW in Brazil is highly underreported by the health sector, showing the need for adequate training of health professionals to recognize situations of violence and raise awareness of the importance of reporting.

Knowledge, Attitude And Practice Of Antenatal Care Among Pregnant Women Of Angu Wan Rogo Sokoto State, Nigeria

Background: Antenatal care is a medical and general care that is provided to pregnant women during pregnancy. In Nigeria as well as in the world maternal mortality is high.The aim of this study is to access the level of knowledge, attitude and practice toward antenatal care service among women of Unguwar Rogo Sokoto. Materials and Method: The study design was cross sectional descriptive design and study population among married women of reproductive age group of Unguwar Rogo area Sokoto. A total of 250 women were selected based on systematic random sampling technique after estimating number of women (650). Interviewed administered questionnaire was the instrument used and data collected was entered into SPSS version 20 and analysed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard division and chi-square Result: Majority 232 (92.8%) of women knew about antenatal care and the rest 18 (7.2%) did not know about antenatal care. About ( 94%) of the respondents wanted to follow antenatal care while (6.0% ) women do not want to follow antenatal care if they get pregnant due to negative attitude.Home delivery was found to be 42.5%. Also, about 94% of women practiced antennal care follow up during their pregnancy time. The chisquare of mother knowledge and mother practice X 2 = 160.4622 and p-value = 0.000 show that there is statistically significant association between mother knowledge and practice of ANC. Conclusion and Recommendation: Both knowledge and practice of antenatal care service were found to be good among the study respondent but hospital delivery is low. The study further recommend the need to educate both women and husband to know the important of hospital delivery.

Uterine Artery Doppler as Predictive Measure for Fetal Growth Restriction in Chronic Hypertensive Patients

Background: Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is when the fetal weight is less than tenth centile for the given gestational age. Chronic hypertension is one of the risk factors of FGR. Growth restricted fetuses are at risk of intrauterine death and many comorbidities later in life. Detection of those fetuses at risk of developing FGR can help in timely intervention and better outcome.Objective: To evaluate uterine artery Doppler for prediction of FGR in patients with chronic hypertension.Methods: One hundred and sixty four women having chronic hypertension at 24 weeks of gestation were included in the study. Women with multiple pregnancy and comorbidities other than hypertension were excluded. Doppler USG of uterine arteries was done at 24 weeks of gestation by radiologist and absence or presence of diastolic uterine artery notch was observed. Patients were divided into 2 groups A and B depending upon the presence or absence of notch respectively. These women were followed till they delivered and by taking birth weight as an outcome measure, frequency of fetal growth restriction (FGR) was found in both groups by the researchers themselves.Results: The mean age of women in group A was 26.76± 3.89 and in group B was 26.21 ± 3.57 years. Major portion of women was multipara 58% (96 women). Forty (24.39%) patients developed fetal growth restriction while 124 patients (75.61%) fetuses were of normal weight. Among the patients who had growth retarded foetuses 35.37% patients were in group A and 13.41% were in group B with p-value of 0.001.Conclusion: Uterine artery doppler diastolic notch at 24 weeks of gestation has significant association with development of FGR in patients with chronic hypertension.
