Mentoring Faculty Women in Statistics: Exploring Challenges and Opportunities for Leadership Development

ABSTRACTThe problems for faculty women in statistics (FWIS) in the United States are complex and call for programs that aim to develop inclusive leadership competencies among both FWIS and faculty men in statistics (FMIS) regardless of whether they currently hold, or aspire to, administrative positions. Data indicate that, among faculty in doctorate-granting departments of statistics and biostatistics, there is a disparity between genders in numbers of role models or exemplars. Yet we note that there have been some innovative national initiatives over the years in mentoring, networking, or leadership that have been instrumental in advancing FWIS. Given current understandings of the role of implicit bias in sustaining a differential status for FWIS, this discussion emphasizes a new approach as a way to further advance FWIS: one that involves the development of inclusive leadership among both men and women toward promoting inclusive faculty cultures in statistics.

Improving student in-depth understanding of statistics

When striving to improve student in-depth understanding of statistics, one of the most important challenges instructors face is overcoming the negative student attitude towards statistics. This paper focuses on one approach that has been very effective, namely the inclusion of historical insights into statistics courses. Possibilities of doing that are numerous and range from simple exercises (e.g. assigning a face to the name, or discussing examples of famous past statistical achievements and blunders) to well-rounded lectures (e.g., on socio-economic context of past developments in statistics and methodology, or the role of women in statistics). In the paper, the advantages and disadvantages of this approach are discussed in detail along with several excellent resources that can aid instructors in their endeavours to give statistics a more human face in the eyes of their students.

Women in the Statistics Profession: A Status Report

Summary The mandate of the International Statistical Institute (ISI) is to foster international statistical work and interchange among statisticians and countries. However, women are under-represented in the ISI and this situation is a cause for concern in the Institute and its membership and particularly the ISI Committee on Women in Statistics (CWS). This paper analyses the representation of women in the ISI and in the statistics profession which is low in virtually every country, a pattern of generations. It looks at the diverse realities among countries and regions, and the broader context of women working in the scientific professions.

Women in Statistics in Academe: Mentors Matter

Federal and state agencies, private industry and professional societies are developing programs to encourage women to enter the education "pipeline" for careers in science and technology. To reverse female students' underrepresentation in science and to retain incoming women in these fields, especially those entering academia, requires the active support of women and men faculty as mentors. The focus of the present manuscript addresses this issue. Here, we give a profile of women in statistics and, more broadly, in the sciences, and we outline the elements of a good mentor. Statistics are presented in support of our argument, but case studies form the basis for the recommendations.
