Using mesh topology in building a wireless home automation network

Currently, with the advent of smart devices, our life has become more convenient – it is now easier to do household chores, track the movement of goods, etc. The development of smart devices with the advent of new wireless communication standards helped to give impulse to the unification of smart gadgets into a network, which is often used in smart homes. With this approach, there are some security problems, such as unauthorized access to devices by third parties, interference with the operation of devices, failure of routers, limiting the radius of data transfer between devices, reducing the bandwidth of devices with increasing distance between the gadget and the router, etc. This article talks about IoT technology and how I use it for home automation. The modern view of building wireless home automation networks, which allows you to solve some of these problems, involves a decentralized approach, for example, the usage of mesh-network. This article describes how mesh networking works, and lists the benefits of using it in home automation. When using mesh networking technologies such as Z-Wave or Zigbee, it is possible to link multiple devices into a «seamless» network using Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. The authors reviewed the most popular technologies that use mesh network topology for home automation. These technologies increase the throughput of devices several times. It also allows you to protect devices from third-party intrusion into the system by assigning unique private keys to each device of the network, which decrypts only those packets that are intended for this device.

An Interference Aware Heuristic Routing Protocol for Wireless Home Automation Networks

Wireless Home Automation Networks consist of battery powered sensors and actuators that communicate with each other over wireless channels. The sensor nodes collect environmental information such as temperature, light intensity, humidity, and pressure to provide context-aware services and to facilitate smart home control. However, resource limitations, unpredictable topology changes, and interference introduce a number of challenges to the design of home automation protocols. One of the challenging tasks is developing energy efficient routing protocols to prolong the network lifetime. This paper proposes an interference aware heuristic routing protocol which determines the forwarding path between sensors and the base station using a heuristic function and a heuristic search algorithm. On the basis of local and global distance, longevity factor (LF), and link quality (LQ), the heuristic function generates a heuristic value for each node and this value is used in A_ search algorithm to determine the efficient route. Simulation results show that the proposed routing scheme outperforms GAHR and AODVjr protocols in terms of network lifetime, energy consumption, and message throughput. Furthermore, it achieves up to 15% increase in packet delivery ratio over GAHR protocol in a noisy environment

An Efficient Secure Multichannel Traffic Management Scheme in 2.4 GHz Home Automation Network with IoT Functions

A home automation system integrates electrical devices in a house with each other. In this paper, an efficient secure multichannel traffic management scheme for wireless home automation networks with IoT (Internet of Things) functions is proposed. The mechanism includes a channel resource optimization scheme by the centralized channel assignment algorithms and an intrusion detection scheme for security enhancement with the traffic management. We evaluated the performance of the mechanism by using the wireless data measured on real wireless home networks. The simulation results show that the scheme can effectively manage the multi-channel status of the networks and detect the intrusion attacks, which improve the overall network performance.

A holistic approach to ZigBee performance enhancement for home automation networks.

Wireless home automation networks are gaining importance for smart homes. In this ambit, ZigBee networks play an important role. The ZigBee specification defines a default set of protocol stack parameters and mechanisms that is further refined by the ZigBee Home Automation application profile. In a holistic approach, we analyze how the network performance is affected with the tuning of parameters and mechanisms across multiple layers of the ZigBee protocol stack and investigate possible performance gains by implementing and testing alternative settings. The evaluations are carried out in a testbed of 57 TelosB motes. The results show that considerable performance improvements can be achieved by using alternative protocol stack configurations. From these results, we derive two improved protocol stack configurations for ZigBee wireless home automation networks that are validated in various network scenarios. In our experiments, these improved configurations yield a relative packet delivery ratio increase of up to 33.6%, a delay decrease of up to 66.6% and an improvement of the energy efficiency for battery powered devices of up to 48.7%, obtainable without incurring any overhead to the network.

Wireless home automation networks for indoor surveillance: technologies and experiments

Abstract The use of wireless technologies for critical surveillance and home automation introduces a number of opportunities as well as technological challenges. New emerging technologies give the opportunity to exploit the full potential of the internet of things paradigm by augmenting existing wired installations with smart wireless architectures. This work gives an overview of requirements, characteristics, and challenges of wireless home automation networks with special focus on intrusion detection systems. The proposed wireless network is based on several sensors that are deployed over a monitored area for detecting possible risky situations and triggering appropriate actions in response. The network needs to support critical traffic patterns with different characteristics and quality constraints. Namely, it should provide a periodic low-power monitoring service and, in case of intrusion detection, a real-time alarm propagation mechanism over inherently unreliable wireless links subject to fluctuations of the signal power. Following the guidelines introduced by recent standardization, this paper proposes the design of a wireless network prototype at 868 MHz which is able to satisfy the specifications of typical intrusion detection applications. A proprietary medium access control is developed based on the low-power SimpliciTI radio stack (Texas Instruments Incorporated, San Diego, CA, USA). Network performance is assessed by experimental measurements using a test-bed in an indoor office environment with severe multipath and nonline-of-sight propagation conditions. The measurement campaigns highlight the potential of the sub-GHz technology for cable replacing.

WHAN's primary goal is to maintain user comfort and efficient home management. Conventional WHAN lacks "intelligence" in terms of managing compound human comfort, and it deals with multitude of human comfort factors individually instead of collectively. This paper presents wireless sensor networks-based Human Comfort Ambient Intelligence system. A fuzzy-rule-based system for the measurement of human comfort index in a living space is presented. The system is evaluated and tested with simulated and empirical data. It explores the complex relationship between multiple comfort factors. The comfort factors considered here include thermal comfort, visual comfort, indoor air comfort and acoustical comfort.

WHANs Based Smart Home System Designing in Intelligent Buildings

This paper presents a new and competitive smart home system in intelligent buildings based on wireless home automation networks (WHANs). Our designed system has three layers: ultimate controller, data transmission network, and wireless sensor networks. The merits of our system include two folds: 1) it is easy to be adopted in our home without any changing our existing electronic devices; 2) unlike other independent subsystem, the whole-sale functions of smart system are integrated into our system, it can perform well from many anticipant applications. The efficacy of our designed system is proven by practical application environment.

An Intrusion Detection Scheme for Home Wireless Sensor Networks

In this paper, we propose an intrusion detection framework through multi-agents scheme for wireless home automation networks. Our mechanisms include the wireless sensor network intrusion detection architecture and an intrusion detection scheme for security enhancement. For the performance evaluation of our mechanism, we use the wireless data measured on the real wireless home networks. The simulation results show that the security manager detect the intrusion attack to improve the whole performance of the system, and can prolong the lifetime of the network.

Conventional WHAN lacks higher “intelligence” in term of managing compound human comfort where as it deals with multitude of human comfort factors individually instead of collectively. This paper presents wireless sensor networks (WSN) based Human Comfort Ambient Intelligence (HCAmI) system. The design of a Fuzzy Rule Based System (FRBS) for the measurement of Human Comfort Index (HCI) in a living space is presented. The design of FRBS is described and the system is evaluated and tested by using combined simulated and empirical data. It explores the complex relationship between multiple comfort factors in human comfort provisioning. The comfort factors considered here include thermal comfort, visual comfort, indoor air comfort and acoustical comfort.

Wireless home automation networks: A survey of architectures and technologies

Wireless home automation networks comprise wireless embedded sensors and actuators that enable monitoring and control applications for home user comfort and efficient home management. This article surveys the main current and emerging solutions that are suitable for WHANs, including ZigBee, Z-Wave, INSTEON, Wavenis, and IP-based technology.
