Preud and the Americans: The Beginnings of Psychoanalysis in the United States, 1876-1917

Even those who disagree with Freud's doctrines recognize their profound influence on American thought. But when we talk about the influence of Freud, we are often rather ill informed on the state of psychological and psychiatric opinion prior to the introduction of his teachings. Now this ignorance can be relieved. In this book Hale presents a clear picture of the American climate of opinion, civilized morality, the somatic style of psychiatric thought, the various mind cures and mystical trends. Then he tells of the early introduction of some of Freud's ideas, leading to his being invited to lecture at Clark University in 1909.
