An Effective Clutter Suppression Approach Based on Null-Space Technique for the Space-Borne Multichannel in Azimuth High-Resolution and Wide-Swath SAR System

In this article, an effective clutter suppression algorithm is presented for the space-borne azimuth multiantenna high-resolution and wide-swath (HRWS) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system, which is based on the null-space technique. First, the echo of bistatic geosynchronous-low earth orbit (GEO-LEO) azimuth multiantenna HRWS SAR-ground moving target indication (GMTI) system is utilized to deduce the coarse-focused image of moving targets and clutter, where the Chirp Fourier transform (CFT) in azimuth is involved. Then, the matrix form can be utilized to describe the coarse-focused image of the multiantenna SAR system and the corresponding covariance matrix can be estimated. After that, the null-space is constructed using the covariance matrix corresponding to clutter, where at least a redundant channel freedom is required. Since the null-space vector is orthogonal to signal-space vector, it can be used to suppress the clutter. As an equivalent phase is brought by the slant velocity, the moving targets’ echo can be preserved during clutter suppression. Then, the optimization and suboptimization vectors for clutter suppression are introduced. It is worth noting that the proposed clutter suppression algorithm is robust for the antenna mismatch, that is, the antenna mismatch in phase and the corresponding position error. Finally, the theoretical investigations are validated using some simulation experiments, where the experiments for bistatic GEO-LEO and single-platform azimuth multiantenna HRWS SAR-GMTI system are both included. In addition, the real measured single-platform azimuth multiantenna HRWS SAR data experiments are also performed.

GMTI processing for multi-channel high-resolution wide-swath SAR systems

ABSTRACTGround moving target indication (GMTI) is an important application of future multi-channel high-resolution wide-swath (MC-HRWS) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system. This paper improves the extended displaced-phase-center antenna (EDPCA) method for efficient GMTI with a MC-HRWS SAR System. This processing method called improved EDPCA is derived in this paper and is applied to simulated data and real data in order to validate the theory. Compared with EDPCA, the improved EDPCA can decrease the degrees of freedom (DOFs) required by GMTI processing and the false alarm rate induced by the ambiguous image of moving target. In addition, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) loss of moving target caused by linear range cell migration (RCM) can be avoided without a priori knowledge of the radial velocity.

A Moving Target Imaging Algorithm for HRWS SAR/GMTI Systems

For a target illuminated by a high-resolution and wide-swath synthetic aperture radar system, the velocity is estimated based on sparse direction-of-arrival estimation. Then, the space-time adaptive processing algorithm is utilized to suppress the clutter and reconstruct the spectra of the target, followed by the traditional target imaging. The performance of the proposed algorithm is analyzed in detail. The proposed algorithm can retain the power of the moving target, and is free of searching.

Ground Moving Target Indication for High-Resolution Wide-Swath Synthetic Aperture Radar Systems

This letter presents a new scheme for ground moving target indication in high-resolution wide-swath (HRWS)-synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems. The asymmetry of the Doppler spectra is measured to extract the range bins with moving targets. To improve the computational efficiency, only the extracted range bins are used to restore the unambiguous Doppler spectra. The two-look processing technique is then applied to generate two looks and moving targets are indicated by comparing the difference between the two looks. In this detection scheme, the configuration of the conventional HRWS-SAR system remains unchanged and no additional receiving channels are needed. The experimental results show the effectiveness of this detection scheme.

Simultaneous Stationary Scene Imaging and Ground Moving Target Indication for High-Resolution Wide-Swath SAR System

In synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, moving targets are usually smeared and/or imaged at incorrect positions due to the target motions during the SAR integration time. Moreover, since a high-resolution wide-swath SAR system is operated with a rather low pulse repetition frequency, a moving target will cause multiple ghost targets in the reconstructed SAR image. A new space–time adaptive processing framework is proposed in this paper for removing moving target artifacts in SAR images. In this new framework, the dynamic steering vector concept is proposed. In addition, this paper develops a moving target processing scheme for clutter suppression and moving target imaging and location for a high-resolution wide-swath SAR system. Finally, we locate the well-focused moving targets at the stationary scene image without any disturbing artifacts. The simulated and real data are used to validate the effectiveness of our proposed method.

Errata: Digital Beamforming on Receive: Techniques and Optimization Strategies for High-Resolution Wide-Swath SAR Imaging

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is a well-proven imaging technique for remote sensing of the Earth. However, conventional SAR systems are not capable of fulfilling the increasing demands for improved spatial resolution and wider swath coverage. To overcome these inherent limitations, several innovative techniques have been suggested which employ multiple receive-apertures to gather additional information along the synthetic aperture. These digital beamforming (DBF) on receive techniques are reviewed with particular emphasis on the multi-aperture signal processing in azimuth and a multi-aperture reconstruction algorithm is presented that allows for the unambiguous recovery of the Doppler spectrum. The impact of Doppler aliasing is investigated and an analytic expression for the residual azimuth ambiguities is derived. Further, the influence of the processing on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is analyzed, resulting in a pulse repetition frequency (PRF) dependent factor describing the SNR scaling of the multi-aperture beamforming network. The focus is then turned to a complete high-resolution wide-swath SAR system design example which demonstrates the intricate connection between multi-aperture azimuth processing and the system architecture. In this regard, alternative processing approaches are compared with the multi-aperture reconstruction algorithm. In a next step, optimization strategies are discussed as pattern tapering, prebeamshaping-on-receive, and modified processing algorithms. In this context, the analytic expressions for both the residual ambiguities and the SNR scaling factor are generalized to cascaded beamforming networks. The suggested techniques can moreover be extended in many ways. Examples discussed are a combination with ScanSAR burst mode operation and the transfer to multistatic sparse array configurations.
