Phase Noise Compensation Algorithm for Space-Borne Azimuth Multi-Channel SAR.

Azimuth multi-channel synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has always been an important technical means to achieve high-resolution wide-swath (HRWS) SAR imaging. However, in the space-borne azimuth multi-channel SAR system, random phase noise will be produced during the operation of each channel receiver. The phase noise of each channel is superimposed on the SAR echo signal of the corresponding channel, which will cause the phase imbalance between the channels and lead to the generation of false targets. In view of the above problems, this paper proposes a random phase noise compensation method for space-borne azimuth multi-channel SAR. This method performs feature decomposition by calculating the covariance matrix of the echo signal and converts the random phase noise estimation into the optimal solution of the cost function. Considering that the phase noise in the receiver has frequency-dependent and time-varying characteristics, this method calculates the phase noise estimation value corresponding to each range-frequency point in the range direction and obtains the phase noise estimation value by expectation in the azimuth direction. The proposed random phase noise compensation method can suppress false targets well and make the radar present a well-focused SAR image. Finally, the usefulness of the suggested method is verified by simulation experiments.

High-Resolution and Wide-Swath SAR Imaging with Space–Time Coding Array

To achieve high-resolution and wide-swath (HRWS) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, this paper focuses on resolving the problem of separating range-ambiguous echoes with the space–time coding (STC) array. At the modeling stage, the transmit elements and pulses of the STC array are configured with time delay and phase coding modulation, which introduces extra degrees of freedom (DOFs) in the transmit domain. To separate the echoes corresponding to different range-ambiguity regions, the equivalent transmit beamforming is performed in the two-dimensional space–frequency domain. Moreover, in order to compensate for the loss of range resolution during the beamforming progress, the frequency splicing method is proposed. At the analysis stage, the distributed target simulation is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of obtaining HRWS SAR images in the STC radar. Additionally, the performance of resolving range ambiguity is compared with the traditional radar in terms of the range-ambiguity-to-signal ratio (RASR).

High-Resolution and Wide-Swath SAR Imaging With Sub-Band Frequency Diverse Array

High-resolution and wide-swath imaging serves as an important task for synthetic aperture radar (SAR). However, the tradeoff between high azimuth resolution and wide unambiguous swath coverage has not been well optimized in traditional SAR system. Meanwhile, the ultrawideband signal is required to obtain ultrahigh range resolution imaging. It is not easy to increase the bandwidth directly due to the difficulty of system design. To this end, this article makes notable contribution on a sub-band frequency diverse array framework to realize range ambiguous echoes separation and wideband signal synthesis from narrowband signals. By introducing a small frequency increment across the elements within each subarray, the transmit steering vector within each subarray is range-angle-dependent, making it feasible to resolve range ambiguity in the spatial frequency. In addition, the transmitted waveforms of different subarrays occupy different frequency bands in range frequency domain, which play a pivotal role in achieving high-resolution imaging. With phase compensation and sub-band frequency spectrum splicing technique, the wideband signal can be obtained. Simulation results have verified the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Incidence Angle Normalization of Dual-Polarized Sentinel-1 Backscatter Data on Greenland Ice Sheet

The backscatter coefficients of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images that observe the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) are incidence angle dependent, which impedes subsequent applications, such as monitoring its surface melting. Therefore, backscatter intensities with varying incidence angles should be normalized. This study proposes an incidence angle normalization method for dual-polarized Sentinel-1 images for GrIS. A multiple linear regression model is trained using the ratio between the backscatter coefficient differences and the incidence angle differences of quasi-simultaneously observed ascending and descending image pairs. Regression factors include the geographical position and elevation. The precision evaluation to the ascending and descending images suggests better normalization results than the widely used cosine-square correction method for horizontal transmit and horizontal receive (HH) images and a slight improvement for horizontal transmit and vertical receive (HV) images. Another dataset of GrIS Sentinel-1 mosaics in four 6-day repeating periods in 2020 is also tested to evaluate the proposed method and yields similar results. For HH images, the proposed method performs better than the cosine-square method, reducing 0.34 dB RMSE on average. The overall accuracy of our proposed method is 0.77 and 0.75 dB for HH and HV images, respectively. The proposed incidence angle normalization method can benefit the application of wide-swath SAR images to the study of large-scale and long-period observation on GrIS.

Channel Phase Calibration for High-Resolution and Wide-Swath SAR Imaging with Doppler Spectrum Sharpness Optimization

Channel phase calibration is a crucial issue in high resolution and wide swath (HRWS) imagery with azimuth multi-channel synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems. Precise phase calibration is definitely required in reconstructing the full Doppler spectrum for precise HRWS imagery without high-level ambiguities. In this paper, we propose a novel calibration for HRWS SAR imagery by optimizing the reconstructed unambiguous Doppler spectrum. The sharpness of the reconstructed Doppler spectrum is applied as the metric to measure the unambiguity quality, which is maximized to retrieve the element phase error caused by channel imbalance. Real data experiments demonstrate the performance of the proposed calibration for ambiguity suppression in HRWS SAR imagery.

Multi-Layer Overlapped Subaperture Algorithm for Extremely-High-Squint High-Resolution Wide-Swath SAR Imaging with Continuously Time-Varying Radar Parameters

Extremely-high-squint (EHS) geometry of the traditional constant-parameter synthetic aperture radar (SAR) induces non-orthogonal wavenumber spectrum and hence the distortion of point spread function (PSF) in focused images. The method invented to overcome this problem is referred to as new-concept parameter-adjusting SAR. It corrects the PSF distortion by adjusting radar parameters, such as carrier frequency and chirp rate, based on instant data acquisition geometry. In this case, the characteristic of signal is quite different from the constant-parameter SAR and therefore, the traditional imaging algorithms cannot be directly applied for parameter-adjusting SAR imaging. However, the existing imaging algorithm for EHS parameter-adjusting SAR suffers from insufficient accuracy if a high-resolution wide-swath (HRWS) performance is required. Thus, this paper proposes a multi-layer overlapped subaperture algorithm (ML-OSA) for EHS HRWS parameter-adjusting SAR imaging with three main contributions: First, a more accurate signal model with time-varying radar parameters in high-squint geometry is derived. Second, phase errors are compensated with much higher accuracy by implementing multiple layers of coarse-to-fine spatially variant filters. Third, the analytical swath limit of the ML-OSA is derived by considering both the residual errors of signal model and phase compensations. The presented approach is validated via both the point- and extended-target computer simulations.

Design and Performance Analysis of Sparse TOPS SAR Mode

Terrain observation by progressive scans (TOPS) is a novel and promising wide-swath synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging mode, which overcomes the scalloping effect existing in ScanSAR. Traditional imaging algorithms are computationally efficient in raw data processing of TOPS, but the problems from clutter and sidelobes suppression have not been effectively solved. Sparse SAR imaging not only effectively solves these problems, but also has great potential in improving system performance, <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">e.g.</i> , lower requirement of pulse repetition frequency (PRF), higher swath coverage, less data amount, and lower system complexity. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel sparse TOPS SAR imaging mode. The proposed mode combines advantages of sparse imaging system and TOPS mode to achieve high-quality and wide-swath SAR imaging. In this mode, we first design the beam position by timing diagram. Then the basic parameters of the mode are calculated according to the radar equation, and the properties such as grating lobes are analyzed. Finally, an <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$L_{2,1}$</tex-math></inline-formula> -norm regularization based sparse TOPS SAR imaging algorithm is introduced to achieve the high-quality sparse scene recovery. Experimental results show that compared with conventional TOPS imaging mode, the proposed mode can obtain wide swath with lower PRF and effectively solve the effect on distributed target ambiguity ratio (DTAR). Compared with matched filtering (MF) based TOPS imaging algorithm, the sparse method can achieve unambiguous reconstruction of the considered scene from down-sampled data, and obtain the image with less artifacts.

Method of High Signal-to-Noise Ratio and Wide Swath SAR Imaging Based on Continuous Pulse Coding

In synthetic aperture radar (SAR), increasing the pulsewidth of signal is an effective way to achieve high signal-to-noise ratio (HSNR) imaging. However, when the pulse repetition frequency (PRF) is fixed, increasing the pulsewidth will reduce the maximum unambiguous swath width of SAR. In order to solve this contradiction, a method based on continuous pulse coding (CPC) which increases the average transmit power by multiple pulses with varying high PRF is proposed in this article. Due to the small interval between pulses, the echo will have range ambiguity and occlusion problems. To obtain the complete echo, we first use the form of CPC signal and the swath width of radar to construct a linear equation set to model the ambiguous echo of each receiving window. Next, the established linear equations are split according to the distribution law of receiving window. Finally, the echo energy accumulation of multiple pulses is accomplished by solving the split sublinear equations. Therefore, the echo with both swath width corresponding to narrow pulse and HSNR corresponding to wide pulse is obtained to realize HSNR and wide swath SAR imaging. The experimental results have confirmed the effectiveness of the method proposed in this article.

An Efficient Radio Frequency Interference Mitigation Algorithm in Real Synthetic Aperture Radar Data

As a wideband radar system, a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) may conflict with several electromagnetic systems, such as frequency modulation (FM), TV, and other communication systems. These signals, termed as radio frequency interference (RFI), may severely interfere SAR systems from generating a high-resolution image. Numerous previous researches focused on the RFI suppression problem, among which the semiparametric methods have been verified to have the state-of-the-art performance. However, most of the semiparametric methods are computationally expensive and can hardly be used on wide-swath SAR imaging processing. In this article, an efficient semiparametric algorithm is proposed to suppress RFIs via alternating projections. It has comparable performance as the other methods but significantly improves the computational efficiency a lot. It is able to remove both narrowband and wideband RFIs and can be used directly on the Level-1 SAR data. Finally, multiple real SAR data are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

High-Resolution and Wide-Swath SAR Imaging Mode Using Frequency Diverse Planar Array

The challenging problem to realize high-resolution and wide-swath (HRWS) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging is the ambiguity suppression in the azimuth and range directions. According to the spatial angle difference of each ambiguity component, the current technical approach is to design the spatial filter for achieving the ambiguity suppression based on the 2-D multichannel system. Along with the increasing of HRWS imaging requirements, the number of system channels also gradually increase and further result in the complex structure design of the phased array antenna system. Meanwhile, the traditional phased array antenna cannot effectively control the direction of the transmit beampattern in range. Unlike the traditional phased array, frequency diverse array (FDA) employs a small-frequency increment across the whole array elements and forms the range-angle-dependent S-shaped transmit beampattern, which can be utilized to separate the different range ambiguous region. Considering the above-mentioned characteristics and the range periodicity problem of transmit beampattern, this letter devises a scheme for spaceborne SAR HRWS imaging mode in the view of transmit beampattern utilizing 2-D planar array, i.e., the FDA in azimuth for removing the range nonperiodicity ambiguity and the conventional phased array in elevation for removing the range periodicity ambiguity. Simulation results have been presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

The Space-Time Variation of Phase Imbalance for GF-3 Azimuth Multichannel Mode

Azimuth multichannel (AMC) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is an advanced technology that can prevent the minimum antenna area constraint and provide high-resolution and wide-swath SAR images. The calibration of phase imbalance is an important topic in the AMC SAR signal processing since it has a significant impact on the image quality. For one SAR image, the phase imbalance is usually considered as a constant. However, because of the attitude errors, antenna position errors, target elevation, target motion, and phase mismatch of the antenna pattern, the actual phase imbalance is time-varying in azimuth and space-varying in range. Although the space-time variation of phase imbalances is too tiny to make a little effect on the product quality, it is still meaning to study the variation. On the one hand, it is possible to quickly estimate the phase imbalance of the whole observing operation and eliminate the influences of target motion, on the phase imbalance. On the other hand, some parameters, such as motion, can be retrieved by the phase imbalance. This article first establishes the signal models between phase imbalances and attitude errors, antennal position errors, and target elevation. Then, the signal model is verified by some simulations based on the parameters of Gaofen-3 (GF-3). In addition, the phase imbalance of the real data acquired by GF-3 is processed. Finally, based on the procession results of GF-3 real data, this article makes some discussions and points out the direction for the future work.

A novel range ambiguity resolving approach for high-resolution and wide-swath SAR imaging utilizing space-pulse phase coding

High-resolution and wide-swath (HRWS) imaging is highly desired in future synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems. However, it is a contradictory requirement between high azimuth resolution and wide unambiguous swath coverage in a traditional SAR system. This paper proposes a novel solution to realize HRWS imaging by resolving the range ambiguity through a phase coding technique. The phase coding is employed in both spatial channels and slow time pulses. By properly designing the coding scheme, it is possible to separate the echoes from multiple ambiguous range regions from each other in the spatial domain. For each particular range region, the corresponding optimized receive beampattern can be used to extract the desired echoes from the presumed range region and suppress the undesired echoes from other range-ambiguous regions. The residual range-ambiguous echoes are also addressed. Specifically, it is capable of further mitigating the residual range-ambiguous echoes by optimally designing the coding scheme and the transmit beampattern. In the final, a bank of imaging processors can be implemented to obtain the high-resolution images of these range regions, which can be synthesized into a whole HRWS SAR image of the scene of interest. Simulation results have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method.

High-Resolution and Wide-Swath SAR Imaging via Poisson Disk Sampling and Iterative Shrinkage Thresholding

Since the width of range swath of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is restricted by the pulse repetition frequency, there exists a tradeoff between the azimuth resolution and the range swath width. As a result, conventional SAR imaging methods based on the Nyquist sampling theorem can hardly achieve the high resolution and wide swath simultaneously. In this paper, we propose an algorithm of high-resolution and wide-swath SAR imaging based on the combination of Poisson disk sampling and iterative shrinkage thresholding. Poisson disk sampling adopted in the azimuth direction can ensure that the interval between any two adjacent pulses is longer than the Nyquist sampling interval, which provides the potential to widen SAR imaging swath in the range direction. The imaging formation is carried out by performing the inverse operator of the chirp scaling algorithm and the shrinkage thresholding in an iterative fashion. Compared with the existing SAR imaging methods, the proposed method can realize high-resolution and wide-swath SAR imaging simultaneously with affordable computational cost. Simulations and experiments on real SAR data demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Channel Imbalances and Along-Track Baseline Estimation for the GF-3 Azimuth Multichannel Mode

Azimuth multichannel (AMC) synthetic aperture radar (SAR), which contains multiple receiving antennas along the azimuth, can prevent the minimum antenna area constraint and provide high-resolution and wide-swath (HRWS) SAR images. Channel calibration and along-track baseline estimation are important topics in an AMC SAR system, since they have a great impact on image quality. Based on the signal model for stationary target of AMC SAR, this paper first analyses the influence of the along-track baseline and channel imbalances on SAR images by simulation. Then, a novel method to simultaneously estimate the along-track baseline, phase imbalance and range sample time imbalance (RSTI) based on the azimuth cross-correlation in the two-dimensional frequency domain is addressed. In addition, with the help of simulations and real data acquired by Gaofen-3 (GF-3), the effectiveness of this method is verified by comparing with some existing methods. Finally, this paper analyzes the estimation accuracy of this method under different scenarios and signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), and points out the direction for future research.

AN ADAPTIVE SHIP DETECTION ALGORITHM FOR HRWS SAR IMAGES UNDER COMPLEX BACKGROUND: APPLICATION TO SENTINEL1A DATA

Abstract. Real-time ship detection using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) plays a vital role in disaster emergency and marine security. Especially the high resolution and wide swath (HRWS) SAR images, provides the advantages of high resolution and wide swath synchronously, significantly promotes the wide area ocean surveillance performance. In this study, a novel method is developed for ship target detection by using the HRWS SAR images. Firstly, an adaptive sliding window is developed to propose the suspected ship target areas, based upon the analysis of SAR backscattering intensity images. Then, backscattering intensity and texture features extracted from the training samples of manually selected ship and non-ship slice images, are used to train a support vector machine (SVM) to classify the proposed ship slice images. The approach is verified by using the Sentinl1A data working in interferometric wide swath mode. The results demonstrate the improvement performance of the proposed method over the constant false alarm rate (CFAR) method, where the classification accuracy improved from 88.5 % to 96.4 % and the false alarm rate mitigated from 11.5 % to 3.6 % compared with CFAR respectively.

Multichannel High Resolution Wide Swath SAR Imaging for Hypersonic Air Vehicle with Curved Trajectory.

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) equipped on the hypersonic air vehicle in near space has many advantages over the conventional airborne SAR. However, its high-speed maneuvering characteristics with curved trajectory result in serious range migration, and exacerbate the contradiction between the high resolution and wide swath. To solve this problem, this paper establishes the imaging geometrical model matched with the flight trajectory of the hypersonic platform and the multichannel azimuth sampling model based on the displaced phase center antenna (DPCA) technology. Furthermore, based on the multichannel signal reconstruction theory, a more efficient spectrum reconstruction model using discrete Fourier transform is proposed to obtain the azimuth uniform sampling data. Due to the high complexity of the slant range model, it is difficult to deduce the processing algorithm for SAR imaging. Thus, an approximate range model is derived based on the minimax criterion, and the optimal second-order approximate coefficients of cosine function are obtained using the two-population coevolutionary algorithm. On this basis, aiming at the problem that the traditional Omega-K algorithm cannot compensate the residual phase with the difficulty of Stolt mapping along the range frequency axis, this paper proposes an Exact Transfer Function (ETF) algorithm for SAR imaging, and presents a method of range division to achieve wide swath imaging. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the ETF imaging algorithm.

A method of estimating the velocity of moving targets for use in high-resolution wide-swath SAR imaging

ABSTRACTHigh-resolution wide-swath (HRWS) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems utilize multiple along-track channels to collect additional samples under relatively low pulse repetition frequency (PRF). This manuscript focuses on cross-track velocity estimation of a moving target in HRWS SAR, since this information is an important input parameter to HRWS non-uniform reconstruction and focusing of a moving target. However, velocity estimation in HRWS SAR would face the problems of the Doppler ambiguous image due to under-sampled data in the single channel. In this manuscript, the velocity of a moving target is modeled as phase offset vector. And then the problem of estimating velocity is transformed to find the optimal solution of the proposed cost function. The simulations are conducted to evaluate the performance and effectiveness under different along-track velocities, signal-to-noise ratios, and clutter models. The proposed method is also validated using airborne SAR data with four along-track channels.

A Novel Focus Approach for Squint Mode Multi-Channel in Azimuth High-Resolution and Wide-Swath SAR Imaging Processing

An imaging processing for the squint mode multi-channel in azimuth high-resolution and wide-swath (MC-HRWS) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system is presented in this paper. First, the linear range cell migration correction (RCMC) is employed to correct the skew Doppler spectrum for each channel echo. Then, a robust Doppler spectrum reconstruction method is proposed, which is based on the robust Capon beamforming and multi-Doppler-direction restriction technique. After the reconstruction, a two-step focus approach is utilized to focus the image, where the first step is utilized to deal with the azimuth-invariance components and the second addresses the azimuth-variance component introduced by the linear RCMC. Since the Doppler centroid estimation is crucial to squint mode SAR imaging, this paper also presents a robust entropy-based Doppler centroid estimation algorithm for an MC-HRWS SAR system, where the correlation function approach is employed to estimate the baseband Doppler centroid. More importantly, an entropy-based Doppler ambiguity number resolving approach is proposed and the bisection algorithm is utilized to accelerate the searching process. Some simulation experiments are conducted to verify our proposal. Besides, the results of some real MC-HRWS SAR data also show that the proposed method works well.

A novel Scan SAR imaging method for maritime surveillance via Lp regularization

ABSTRACTIn this article, a novel Scan mode synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging method for maritime surveillance is presented. Conventional Scan SAR is generally operated with severe azimuth resolution loss in order to cover a large area. The proposed imaging method changes the way Scan SAR illuminates sub-scenes and presents a new radar illuminating strategy based on ships’ spatial distribution in each sub-scene. To gain ships’ spatial distribution, a scene sensing algorithm based on radar range profiles together with a peak-seeking and clustering algorithm is introduced. After that, a Markov transfer-probability matrix is generated to make sure that radar illuminates each sub-scene randomly under the probability we calculated before. Finally, an imaging algorithm within the Lp (0 < p ≤ 1) regularization framework is utilized to reconstruct each sub-scene; the regularization problem is solved by an improved iterative thresholding algorithm. The whole wide swath image is joined by putting all the sub-scenes together. Experimental results support that the proposed imaging method can perform high-resolution wide swath SAR imaging effectively and efficiently without reducing the image resolution.

Fast channel phase error calibration algorithm for azimuth multichannel high-resolution and wide-swath synthetic aperture radar imaging system

The configuration of multiple uniformly spaced channels in azimuth can achieve high-resolution and wide-swath images for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems. The unambiguous Doppler spectrum can be reconstructed via digital beamforming (DBF) techniques in the azimuth multichannel SAR system. However, the performance of DBF deteriorates significantly because of the inevitable channel errors in practical applications. Since the SAR antennas are generally unweighted in azimuth, the power of the SAR signal is symmetrically distributed around the Doppler centroid in the azimuth frequency domain. Based on this observation, the covariance matrix of multichannel output in the range-Doppler domain can be regarded as a real matrix when there is no existence of channel errors and the correction of the baseband Doppler centroid is applied. Consequently, we propose a fast calibration algorithm to calculate channel phase errors. The proposed method can acquire the estimation of phase errors directly from the covariance matrix. Thus, the proposed method has the properties of high robustness and low computation load. Theoretical analysis and experiments validate the performance and the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.
