Identifying a Leading Predictor of Arctic Stratospheric Ozone for April Precipitation in Eastern North America

An analysis of the relationship between changes in Arctic stratospheric ozone (ASO) and precipitation in eastern North America (38°–54°N, 65°–87°W; PENA) was performed using observational and reanalysis data coupled with the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model version 4 (WACCM4). We found that March ASO exhibits a strong correlation with PENA in April, indicating that the one-month leading ASO exerts a potentially strong impact on April PENA. Changes in tropospheric circulation over the North Pacific and North America can be influenced by ASO anomalies via stratosphere–troposphere interactions. Increased ASO typically results in the transport of drier, colder air from northwest to eastern North America and suppresses local convective activity by enhancing regional downwelling. These conditions lead to a decrease in regional atmospheric water vapor content (1000–600 hPa). Abnormally high ASO may therefore suppress precipitation, whereas abnormally low ASO serves to enhance precipitation, and the finding is supported by WACCM4 simulations incorporating these ASO anomaly signals. We also present an ASO-based statistical linear model for predicting April PENA. Results confirm that the linear model reproduces April PENA for both training and testing periods, based on March ASO, demonstrating the reliability and stability of this linear model. This study verifies that ASO is a viable predictor for projecting April PENA and thus improving forecasts of regional seasonal precipitation.

Enhanced upward motion through the troposphere over the tropical western Pacific and its implications for the transport of trace gases from the troposphere to the stratosphere

Abstract. The tropical western Pacific (TWP) is a preferential area of air uplifting from the surface to the upper troposphere. A significantly intensified upward motion through the troposphere over the TWP in the boreal wintertime (November to March of the following year, NDJFM) has been detected using multiple reanalysis datasets. The upward motion over the TWP is intensified at rates of 8.0 ± 3.1 % per decade and 3.6 ± 3.3 % per decade in NDJFM at 150 hPa from 1958 to 2017, using JRA55 and ERA5 reanalysis datasets, while the MERRA-2 reanalysis data show a 7.5 ± 7.1 % per decade intensified upward motion for the period 1980–2017. Model simulations using the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model, version 4 (WACCM4), suggest that warming global sea surface temperatures (SSTs), particularly SSTs over the eastern maritime continent and tropical western Pacific, play a dominant role in the intensification of the upward motion by strengthening the Pacific Walker circulation and enhancing the deep convection over the TWP. Using CO as a tropospheric tracer, the WACCM4 simulations show that an increase in CO at a rate of 0.4 ppbv (parts per billion by volume) per decade at the layer 150–70 hPa in the tropics is mainly resulted from the global SST warming and the subsequent enhanced upward motion over the TWP in the troposphere and strengthened tropical upwelling of Brewer–Dobson (BD) circulation in the lower stratosphere. This implies that more tropospheric trace gases and aerosols from both natural maritime sources and outflow from polluted air from South Asia may enter the stratosphere through the TWP region and affect the stratospheric chemistry and climate.

IMK/IAA MIPAS temperature retrieval version 8: nominal measurements

Abstract. A new global set of atmospheric temperature profiles is retrieved from recalibrated radiance spectra recorded with the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS). Changes with respect to previous data versions include a new radiometric calibration considering the time dependency of the detector nonlinearity and a more robust frequency calibration scheme. Temperature is retrieved using a smoothing constraint, while tangent altitude pointing information is constrained using optimal estimation. ECMWF ERA-Interim is used as a priori temperature below 43 km. Above, a priori data are based on data from the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model Version 4 (WACCM4). Bias-corrected fields from specified dynamics runs, sampled at the MIPAS times and locations, are used, blended with ERA-Interim between 43 and 53 km. Horizontal variability of temperature is considered by scaling an a priori 3D temperature field in the orbit plane in a way that the horizontal structure is provided by the a priori while the vertical structure comes from the measurements. Additional microwindows with better sensitivity at higher altitudes are used. The background continuum is jointly fitted with the target parameters up to 58 km altitude. The radiance offset correction is strongly regularized towards an empirically determined vertical offset profile. In order to avoid the propagation of uncertainties of O3 and H2O a priori assumptions, the abundances of these species are retrieved jointly with temperature. The retrieval is based on HITRAN 2016 spectroscopic data, with a few amendments. Temperature-adjusted climatologies of vibrational populations of CO2 states emitting in the 15 µm region are used in the radiative transfer modeling in order to account for non-local thermodynamic equilibrium. Numerical integration in the radiative transfer model is now performed at higher accuracy. The random component of the temperature uncertainty typically varies between 0.4 and 1 K, with occasional excursions up to 1.3 K above 60 km altitude. The leading sources of the random component of the temperature error are measurement noise, gain calibration uncertainty, spectral shift, and uncertain CO2 mixing ratios. The systematic error is caused by uncertainties in spectroscopic data and line shape uncertainties. It ranges from 0.2 K at 20 km altitude for northern midlatitude summer conditions to 2.3 K at 12 km for tropical conditions. The estimated total uncertainty amounts to values between 0.6 K at 20 km for midlatitude summer conditions to 2.5 K at 12–15 km for tropical conditions. The vertical resolution varies around 3 km for altitudes below 50 km. The long-term drift encountered in the previous temperature product has been largely reduced. The consistency between high spectral resolution results from 2002 to 2004 and the reduced spectral resolution results from 2005 to 2012 has been largely improved. As expected, most pronounced temperature differences between version 8 and previous data versions are found in elevated stratopause situations. The fact that the phase of temperature waves seen by MIPAS is not locked to the wave phase found in ECMWF analyses demonstrates that our retrieval provides independent information and does not merely reproduce the prior information.

Is interactive ozone chemistry important to represent polar cap stratospheric temperature variability in Earth-System Models?

Considering the representation of the atmosphere, the current generation of Earth-System Models (ESMs) differs mainly in the representation of the stratospheric ozone layer and its variability and changes. So-called high-top models have a well resolved stratosphere and typically calculate ozone chemistry interactively, low-top models on the other hand rely on parameterized ozone chemistry or prescribed climatological ozone fields and have a model top below the stratopause. Here we investigate whether interactive ozone chemistry is important for representing temperature variability and extremes in the Arctic polar stratosphere. To this end we analyze a suite of two 200 year sensitivity simulations, one with interactive ozone chemistry and one without, performed with the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model version 4 (WACCM4), a stratosphere-resolving version of the National Center for Atmospheric Research Community Earth-System Model. We find a tight coupling between ozone and temperatures over the Arctic polar cap, manifesting in increased variability in stratospheric spring-time temperatures in simulations with interactive chemistry compared to simulations imposing climatological mean ozone abundances. Our results indicate that stratospheric temperature extremes regularly occurring in simulations with interactive chemistry are absent in uncoupled model simulations.

Effects of Arctic stratospheric ozone changes on spring precipitation in the northwestern United States

Abstract. Using observations and reanalysis, we find that changes in April precipitation variations in the northwestern US are strongly linked to March Arctic stratospheric ozone (ASO). An increase in ASO can result in enhanced westerlies in the high and low latitudes of the North Pacific but weakened westerlies in the midlatitudes. The anomalous circulation over the North Pacific can extend eastward to western North America, decreasing the water vapor concentration in the air over the northwestern United States and enhancing downwelling in the northwestern US, which results in decreased precipitation there and vice versa for the decrease in ASO. Model simulations using the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model version 4 (WACCM4) support the statistical analysis of observations and reanalysis data and further reveal that the ASO influences circulation anomalies over the northwestern US in two ways. Stratospheric circulation anomalies caused by the ASO changes can propagate downward to the troposphere in the North Pacific and then eastward to influence the strength of the circulation anomalies over the northwestern US. In addition, sea surface temperature anomalies over the North Pacific, which may be related to the ASO changes, would cooperate with the ASO changes to modify the circulation anomalies over the northwestern US. Our results suggest that ASO variations could be a useful predictor of spring precipitation changes in the northwestern US.

An advanced impact of Arctic stratospheric ozone changes on spring precipitation in China

The effect of spring Arctic Stratospheric Ozone (ASO) changes on spring precipitation in China is analyzed using observations, reanalysis data, and the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model version 4 (WACCM4). We find that February–March mean ASO changes have a significant impact on April–May mean precipitation over Loess Plateau and middle–lower reaches of the Yangtze River—two important grain-producing regions with large populations. Changes in the polar vortex link the ASO to precipitation in China. Stratospheric circulation anomalies caused by ASO changes can propagate to the North Pacific. An increase in ASO leads to enhanced westerlies in the high and low latitudes of the North Pacific but weakened westerly in the mid-latitudes of the North Pacific. The circulation anomalies over the North Pacific, forced by the increase of ASO, can extend westwards to East Asia, leading to an abnormal anticyclone in the East Asian upper and middle troposphere, and an abnormal cyclone in the lower troposphere. This enhances the warm and humid airstream from Western Pacific to Chinese mainland and strengthens upwelling over Loess Plateau and middle–lower reaches of the Yangtze River. These conditions enhance precipitation in central China during positive ASO anomaly events and reduce precipitation during negative events. The WACCM4 simulations support the results from statistical analysis of observations and reanalysis data. Our results suggest that ASO variation can serve as a predictor of spring precipitation variation over Loess Plateau and middle–lower reaches of the Yangtze River.

Effect of the Indo-Pacific Warm Pool on Lower-Stratospheric Water Vapor and Comparison with the Effect of ENSO

Abstract Time-slice experiments with the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model, version 4 (WACCM4), and composite analysis with satellite observations are used to demonstrate that the Indo-Pacific warm pool (IPWP) can significantly affect lower-stratospheric water vapor. It is found that a warmer IPWP significantly dries the stratospheric water vapor by causing a broad cooling of the tropopause, and vice versa for a colder IPWP. Such imprints in tropopause temperature are driven by a combination of variations in the Brewer–Dobson circulation in the stratosphere and deep convection in the troposphere. Changes in deep convection associated with El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) reportedly have a small zonal mean effect on lower-stratospheric water vapor for strong zonally asymmetric effects on tropopause temperature. In contrast, IPWP events have zonally uniform imprints on tropopause temperature. This is because equatorial planetary waves forced by latent heat release from deep convection project strongly onto ENSO but weakly onto IPWP events.

Sensitivity of Sudden Stratospheric Warmings to Previous Stratospheric Conditions

AbstractThe Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model, version 4 (WACCM4), is used to investigate the influence of stratospheric conditions on the development of sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs). To this end, targeted experiments are performed on selected modeled SSW events. Specifically, the model is reinitialized three weeks before a given SSW, relaxing the surface fluxes, winds, and temperature below 10 km to the corresponding fields from the free-running simulation. Hence, the tropospheric wave evolution is unaltered across the targeted experiments, but the stratosphere itself can evolve freely. The stratospheric zonal-mean state is then altered 21 days prior to the selected SSWs and rerun with an ensemble of different initial conditions. It is found that a given tropospheric evolution concomitant with the development of an SSW does not uniquely determine the occurrence of an event and that the stratospheric conditions are relevant to the subsequent evolution of the stratospheric flow toward an SSW, even for a fixed tropospheric evolution. It is also shown that interpreting the meridional heat flux at 100 hPa as a proxy of the tropospheric injection of wave activity into the stratosphere should be regarded with caution and that stratospheric dynamics critically influence the heat flux at that altitude.

Contrasting Short- and Long-Term Projections of the Hydrological Cycle in the Southern Extratropics

Abstract Analysis of model output from phase 5 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) reveals that, in the zonal mean, the near-term projections of summertime changes of precipitation in the Southern Hemisphere (SH) subtropics are very widely scattered among the models. As a consequence, over the next 50 years, the CMIP5 multimodel mean projects no statistically significant trends in the SH subtropics in summer. This appears to be at odds with the widely reported, and robust, poleward expansion of the subtropical dry zones by the end of the twenty-first century. This discrepancy between the shorter- and longer-term projections in SH summer, as shown here, rests in the recovery of the ozone hole in the coming decades, as a consequence of the Montreal Protocol. This is explicitly demonstrated by analyzing model experiments with the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model, version 4 (WACCM4), a high-top model with interactive stratospheric chemistry, and coupled to land, ocean, and sea ice components. Contrasting WACCM4 integrations of the representative concentration pathway 4.5 with and without trends in surface concentrations of ozone-depleting substances allows for demonstrating that stratospheric ozone recovery will largely offset the induced “wet gets wetter and dry gets drier” projections and the accompanying poleward expansion of the subtropical dry zone in the SH. The lack of near-term statistically significant zonal-mean changes in the SH hydrological cycle during summer is of obvious practical importance for many parts of the world, and it might also have implications for the Southern Ocean and the Antarctic continent.

Simulated solar cycle effects on the middle atmosphere: WACCM3 Versus WACCM4

AbstractThe Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model version 4 (WACCM4) is used to quantify solar cycle impacts, including both irradiance and particle precipitation, on the middle atmosphere. Results are compared to previous work using WACCM version 3 (WACCM3) to estimate the sensitivity of simulated solar cycle effects to model modifications. The residual circulation in WACCM4 is stronger than in WACCM3, leading to larger solar cycle effects from energetic particle precipitation; this impacts polar stratospheric odd nitrogen and ozone, as well as polar mesospheric temperatures. The cold pole problem, which is present in both versions, is exacerbated in WACCM4, leading to more ozone loss in the Antarctic stratosphere. Relative to WACCM3, a westerly shift in the WACCM4 zonal winds in the tropical stratosphere and mesosphere, and a strengthening and poleward shift of the Antarctic polar night jet, are attributed to inclusion of the QBO and changes in the gravity wave parameterization in WACCM4. Solar cycle effects in WACCM3 and WACCM4 are qualitatively similar. However, the EPP‐induced increase from solar minimum to solar maximum in polar stratospheric NOy is about twice as large in WACCM4 as in WACCM3; correspondingly, maximum increases in polar O3 loss from solar min to solar max are more than twice as large in WACCM4. This does not cause large differences in the WACCM3 versus WACCM4 solar cycle responses in temperature and wind. Overall, these results provide a framework for future studies using WACCM to analyze the impacts of the solar cycle on the middle atmosphere.

Quantifying tracer transport in the tropical lower stratosphere using WACCM

Abstract. The zonal mean transport of ozone and carbon monoxide (CO) near the tropical tropopause is investigated using the Whole-Atmosphere Community Climate Model version 4 (WACCM4). The variability in temperature, ozone and CO in the model shows good agreement with satellite and balloon observations. Modeled temperature and tracers exhibit large and closely coupled annual cycles in the tropical lower stratosphere, as in the observations. The thermodynamic and tracer budgets in the model are analyzed based on the Transformed Eulerian Mean (TEM) framework on log-pressure coordinates and also using the isentropic formulation. Results show that the coupled seasonal cycles are mainly forced by tropical upwelling over altitudes with large vertical tracer gradients, in agreement with previous observational studies. The model also allows explicit calculation of eddy transport terms, which make an important contribution to ozone tendencies in the tropical lower stratosphere. The character of the eddy fluxes changes with altitude. At higher levels (~2 km above the cold point tropopause), isentropic eddy transport occurs during winter and spring in each hemisphere in the sub-tropics, associated with transient Rossby waves acting on strong background latitudinal gradients. At lower altitudes, close to the tropical tropopause, there is a maximum in horizontal eddy transport during boreal summer associated with the Asian monsoon anticyclone. Sub-seasonal variability in ozone and CO, tied to fluctuations in temperature, is primarily driven by transient tropical upwelling. In isentropic coordinates, the overall tracer budgets are similar to the log-pressure results, highlighting cross-isentropic advection as the main term in the time-mean balance, with large seasonality above the tropopause. However, in isentropic coordinates the tracer variability is largely reduced on both seasonal and sub-seasonal timescales, because tracer fluctuations are highly correlated with temperature (as a response to upwelling).

Momentum budget of the migrating diurnal tide in the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model at vernal equinox

The momentum budget of the migrating diurnal tide (DW1) at the vernal equinox is studied using the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model, version 4 (WACCM4). Classical tidal theory provides an appropriate first‐order prediction of the DW1 structure, while gravity wave (GW) forcing and advection are the two most dominant terms in the momentum equation that account for the discrepancies between classical tidal theory and the calculation based on the full primitive equations. It differs from the conclusion by McLandress (2002a) that the parameterized GW effect is substantially weaker than advection terms based on the Canadian Middle Atmosphere Model (CMAM). In the region where DW1 maintains a large amplitude, GW forcing in the wave breaking region always damps DW1 and advances its phase. The linear advection largely determined by the latitudinal shear of the zonal mean zonal wind makes a dominant contribution to the phase change of DW1 in the zonal wind compared to the GW forcing and nonlinear advection. However, nonlinear advection is more important than GW forcing and linear advection in modulating the amplitude and phase of DW1 in the meridional wind. The DW1 amplitudes in temperature and winds are smaller than the TIMED observations, suggesting that GW forcing is overestimated in the WACCM4 and results in a large damping of DW1.

Dynamic effects of the South Asian high on the ozone valley over the Tibetan Plateau

In this study, the TOMS/SBUV (Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer/Solar Backscatter Ultraviolet Radiometer) data and SAGE (Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment) II data were employed to calculate the monthly total zonal ozone deviations over the Tibetan Plateau and the 150–50-hPa zonal ozone variations. The results show that there is a significant correlation between the two, with a correlation coefficient of 0.977. From 150 to 50 hPa, the ozone valley over the Tibetan Plateau (OVTP) becomes the strongest based on the SAGE II data, and the South Asian high (SAH) is the most active according to the 40-yr reanalysis data of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ERA40), so a correlation between the SAH and the OVTP may exist. The WACCM3 (Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model version 3) simulation results show that both SAH and OVTP could still present within 150–50 hPa with reduced strength even when the height of the Tibetan Plateau was cut down to 1500 m. It is also shown that the seasonal variation of SAH would result in a matched seasonal variation of the OVTP, which suggests a meaningful effect of SAH on the OVTP. Meanwhile, it is found that the atmospheric circulation would impose different effects on the OVTP, depending on the SAH’s evolution stages and movement directions. At 150–50 hPa, as the SAH approaches the plateau, the SAH zonal (meridional) transport would make the OVTP deeper (shallower), while the vertical transport of ozone produces a deeper (shallower) OVTP at the lower (higher) level; the combined dynamic effects lead to a weakened OVTP. When the SAH stabilizes over the plateau, the zonal (meridional) transport results in a shallower (deeper) OVTP while the vertical transport would create a deeper (shallower) OVTP at the middle (bottom and top) levels; the combined dynamic effects produce a deeper OVTP. As the SAH retreats from the plateau, the OVTP becomes deeper (shallower) under the zonal (meridional) effect or shallower under the vertical effect; the combined dynamic effects contribute to a deeper (shallower) OVTP at the middle (bottom and top) levels. The SAH would have a weak effect on the OVTP over the plateau when positioned over the tropical Pacific.

Middle Atmosphere Response to ENSO Events in Northern Hemisphere Winter by the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model

The influences of El Niño and La Niña sea surface temperature anomalies on the middle atmosphere are analyzed using a chemistry-climate model, the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model, version 3 (WACCM3), and the 40-year reanalysis dataset from the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ERA-40). Monthly mean data are used to perform statistical and dynamical analyses. Temperature anomalies are found in the stratosphere during both El Niño and La Niña years. These anomalies exhibit diverse distribution patterns, which we ascribe to the different scales of the planetary waves. During an El Niño winter, planetary waves are most active in December and January, leading to more disturbances of the stratospheric polar vortex and a higher frequency of stratospheric sudden warming (SSW) events. Moreover, on the basis of the three-dimensional Eliassen-Palm (E-P) flux, we find that the main wave action is located in the eastern hemisphere and displaces the polar vortex to the western hemisphere. These vortex displacements are closely connected to the weather and climate in the corresponding areas. In contrast, during a La Niña winter, planetary waves are most active in February and March, and most SSW events occur at the same time. The distribution of the E-P flux indicates that planetary wave fluctuations are located between 90°E and 180°E, resulting in a displacement of the polar vortex with some associated changes in the related atmospheric circulation. In addition, the mesospheric residual circulation (RC) reverses between February and March in both El Niño and La Niña years. Dynamical analyses using parameterized gravity waves show that the mesospheric meridional RC is closely connected to gravity-wave drag. This, in turn, is directly influenced by temperature and zonal wind patterns in the early and late winter of El Niño and La Niña years. These anomalies in the RC may influence the distribution of atmospheric constituents and should be explored further.

Wintertime water vapor in the polar upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere: First satellite observations by Odin submillimeter radiometer

In this paper we present Odin submillimeter radiometer (Odin/SMR) water vapor measurements in the upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere with focus on the polar latitudes in winter. Measurements since 2003 have been compiled to provide a first overview of the water vapor distribution in this altitude range. Our observations show a distinct seasonal increase of the water vapor concentration during winter at a given altitude above 90 km. Above 95 km the observations exhibit the annual water vapor maximum during wintertime. Model simulations from the Hamburg Model of the Neutral and Ionized Atmosphere (HAMMONIA) and the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model version 3 (WACCM3) show results that are very similar to the observations. We suggest that the observed increase in water vapor during winter is mainly caused by a combination of upwelling of moister air from lower altitudes and diffusion processes. Distinct interhemispheric differences in the winter water vapor distribution in the upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere can be observed, both in the observations and the model results. The seasonal water vapor increase in the polar regions is much more pronounced in the Southern Hemisphere winter where higher concentrations can be observed. This observation is most likely due to interhemispheric differences in the underlying dynamics and diffusion processes.

Dynamics of the middle atmosphere as simulated by the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model, version 3 (WACCM3)

The Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model, version 3 (WACCM3) is a state‐of‐the‐art climate model extending from the Earth's surface to the lower thermosphere. In this paper we present a detailed climatology of the dynamics of the middle atmosphere as represented by WACCM3 at various horizontal resolutions and compare them to observations. In addition to the mean climatological fields, we examine in detail the middle atmospheric momentum budget as well as several lower and upper atmosphere coupling phenomena including stratospheric sudden warmings, the 2‐day wave, and the migrating diurnal tide. We find that in large part, differences between WACCM3 and observations and the mean state of the model at various horizontal resolutions are related to gravity wave drag, which is parameterized in WACCM3 (and similar models). All three lower and upper atmosphere coupling processes examined show high sensitivity to the model's resolution.

Climatology of mesopause region temperature, zonal wind, and meridional wind over Fort Collins, Colorado (41°N, 105°W), and comparison with model simulations

Between May 2002 and April 2006, many continuous observations of mesopause region temperature and horizontal wind, each lasting longer than 24 h (termed full‐diurnal‐cycle observations), were completed at the Colorado State University Na Lidar Facility in Fort Collins, Colorado (41°N, 105°W). The combined data set consists of 120 full‐diurnal‐cycle observations binned on a monthly basis, with a minimum of 7 cycles in April and a maximum of 18 cycles in August. Each monthly data set was analyzed to deduce mean values and tidal period perturbations. After removal of tidal signals, monthly mean values are used for the study of seasonal variations in mesopause region temperature, zonal and meridional winds. The results are in qualitative agreement with our current understanding of mean temperature and wind structures in the midlatitude mesopause region with an observed summer mesopause of 167 K at 84 km, summer peak eastward zonal wind of 48 m/s at 94 km, winter zonal wind reversal at ∼95 km, and peak summer (pole) to winter (pole) meridional flow of 17 m/s at 86 km. The observed mean state in temperature, zonal and meridional winds are compared with the predictions of three current general circulation models, i.e., the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model version 3 (WACCM3) with two different simulations of gravity wavefields, the Hamburg Model of the Neutral and Ionized Atmosphere (HAMMONIA), and the 2003 simulation of the Thermosphere‐Ionosphere‐Mesosphere‐Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (TIME‐GCM). While general agreement is found between observation and model predictions, there exist discrepancies between model prediction and observation, as well as among predictions from different models. Specifically, the predicted summer mesopause altitude is lower by 3 km, 8 km, 3 km, and 1 km for WACCM3 the two WACCM runs, HAMMONIA, and TIME‐GCM, respectively, and the corresponding temperatures are 169 K, 170 K, 158 K, and 161 K. The model predicted summer eastward zonal wind peaks to 71 m/s at 102 km, to 48 m/s at 84 km, to 75 m/s at 93 km, and to 29 m/s at 94 km, in the same order. The altitude of the winter zonal wind reversal and seasonal asymmetry of the pole‐to‐pole meridional flow are also compared, and the importance of full‐diurnal‐cycle observations for the determination of mean states is discussed.

Modeling the whole atmosphere response to solar cycle changes in radiative and geomagnetic forcing

The NCAR Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model, version 3 (WACCM3), is used to study the atmospheric response from the surface to the lower thermosphere to changes in solar and geomagnetic forcing over the 11‐year solar cycle. WACCM3 is a general circulation model that incorporates interactive chemistry that solves for both neutral and ion species. Energy inputs include solar radiation and energetic particles, which vary significantly over the solar cycle. This paper presents a comparison of simulations for solar cycle maximum and solar cycle minimum conditions. Changes in composition and dynamical variables are clearly seen in the middle and upper atmosphere, and these in turn affect terms in the energy budget. Generally good agreement is found between the model response and that derived from satellite observations, although significant differences remain. A small but statistically significant response is predicted in tropospheric winds and temperatures which is consistent with signals observed in reanalysis data sets.

Structure of the migrating diurnal tide in the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCM)

As part of an ongoing effort to understand the migrating diurnal tide generated by the NCAR Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model, version 3 (WACCM3), we compare the WACCM3 migrating diurnal tide in the horizontal wind and temperature fields to similar results from the Global Scale Wave Model (GSWM). The WACCM3 diurnal tidal wind fields are also compared to tropical radar measurements at Kauai (22°N, 200.2°E) and Rarotonga (21.3°S, 199.7°E). The large-scale features of the WACCM3 results, such as the global spatial structure and the semiannual amplitude variation are in general agreement with past tidal studies; however, several differences do exist. WACCM3 exhibits a much higher degree of hemispheric asymmetry, lower overall amplitudes around the equinoxes, and peaks which are more confined in latitude when compared with the GSWM. Factors which may contribute to such differences between WACCM3 and GSWM are the solar heating profiles from ozone and water vapor, dissipation, and the zonal mean zonal winds. We find that the internally generated heating in WACCM3 and eddy dissipation values are both smaller than the values specified in the GSWM; the eddy dissipation fields and zonal mean zonal winds of the two models also display measurable differences in spatial structure. Comparisons with radar data show several differences in spatial and seasonal structure. In particular, the diurnal tide zonal winds in WACCM3 above Kauai are considerably larger in amplitude than those observed in the radar data, due to contributions from nonmigrating tidal components including wave numbers eastward 1 through 3, westward 2, and stationary components, which interfere constructively with the migrating component around equinox in WACCM3.
