Pulsatilla saxatilis (Ranunculaceae), a new species from north-east China

Pulsatilla saxatilis (Ranunculaceae), a new species from Fengcheng in Liaoning province, north-east China, is described and illustrated. Gross-morphologically this species is closely similar to P. chinensis in having 3-foliolate leaves, solitary, erect flowers, and persistent, prolonged styles in fruiting period, but differs by having light blue, whitish-blue or white (vs. violet) sepals and persistent styles 2–2.5 cm (vs. 3.5–6.5 cm) long. Pollen morphology also lends strong support for the description of the new species, with P. saxatilis having pantoporate pollen grains while its putative closest ally, P. chinensis, having tricolpate ones.

Aspidistra peltata, Convallariaceae (Asparagaceae s.l.) a new species from northern Vietnam

Aspidistra peltata, a new species morphologically allied to A. tonkinensis (= A. fungilliformis subsp. formosa; A. formosa) discovered in northern Vietnam, is described and illustrated. From the closely related A. tonkinensis, the new species differs in having an erect stem 4–14 cm tall, much smaller leaves, smaller flowers, filamentose stamens, a pure white style and an entire flat stigma with remarkably inflated margin. The new species is obviously a local endemic of the southern part of the South‐Chinese floristic province but it may potentially also found in southern China.

Ottelia fengshanensis, a new bisexual species of Ottelia (Hydrocharitaceae) from southwestern China.

Ottelia fengshanensis, a new species (Hydrocharitaceae) from southwest China is here described and illustrated. Comparing its morphological features to putative close relatives O. guanyangensis, it has 3–4 flowers (vs. 2–5) each spathe, hexagonal-cylindric fruit, white styles (vs. yellow), green leaves (vs. dark green) and fruit tiny winged (vs. winged obviously). Molecular phylogenetic investigation of four DNA sequences (ITS, rbcL, trnK5’ intron and trnS-trnG) and the Poisson Tree Processes model for species delimitation (PTP) analysis, further resolves O. fengshanensis as a new species that is close to O. guanyangensis with distinct support.

Aster lingii, a new name for Rhinactinidia limoniifolia (Astereae, Asteraceae)

Aster Linnaeus (1753: 872) is a large genus of the tribe Astereae, containing ca. 180 species (Nesom 1994). This genus is mainly distributed in Eurasia, with only one species reaching North America (Nesom 1994, Chen et al. 2011). Aster is characterized by its purple or white ray florets and lanceolate style branches (Ling et al. 1985, Nesom 1994, Chen et al. 2011). Previous taxonomists separated many small genera from Aster based on the floret’s characters, such as Kalimeris (Cass.) Cassini (1829: 464), Heteropappus Lessing (1832: 189), and Miyamayomena Kitamura (1982: 409). But recently, many of these segregated genera were suggested to be placed back into Aster based on the phylogenetic evidence (Ito et al. 1995, Li et al. 2012, Jafari et al. 2015, Korolyuk et al. 2015).

He wanted his theatre to be one of the foremost black theatres confronting the black male in his interaction with the white people as presented in Dutchman. The encounter and relationship between Clay and Lula mirrors the historical castration of black manhood since the slavery. Baraka insists that the black people cannot acquire the place and power by imitating and/or absorbing white style in the main stream of the white society. He urges and persuades the black audience not to be caught with the fantasy of harmonious co-existence with the white people through the murder of Clay, a naive and pseudo young white/black male. Cooling down jazz

This article deals with the role of racial imagination in the acceptance of Swedish jazz in Sweden in the first years of the 1950s and discusses how Swedish jazz was connected to an American jazz tradition. It is argued that in its early reception, jazz was intimately linked to African American musicians. The advent of cool jazz and the ideas of race connected to it were key in the acceptance of Swedish jazz. By analysing the racial imagination in articles in the Swedish jazz press the article concludes that the combination of the idea of cool jazz as an authentic, white style of jazz, and an American-Swedish cooperation, authenticated a performance of Swedish jazz musicians.

The Myth of Black and White Modernism: Color Photographs and the Politics of Retrojective Looking

Black and white photographs have long been blamed for the widespread misconception that modern architecture was an entirely monochromatic style. Framed as the result of excessive faith in the truthfulness of photographic documentation, this line of reasoning holds that viewers mistook black and white pictures for representations of a black and white world. I argue, however, that misinformation regarding modernist monochromy did not arise solely from naive interpretations of the pictures themselves. Rather, this false impression of a stark, black and white style was promoted by popular postwar critics eager to distinguish emergent American modernisms from European precedent. The distinction was made visible in print by equating architecture with its documentation: color photographs for the new, black and white for the old. Long excluded from serious architectural scholarship, vintage color photographs have recently resurfaced in books and museum exhibitions where their unique material and chemical properties are now used to signify the historicity of California modernism.

Ipomoea discoidea (Convolvulaceae), una especie nueva de los estados de Guerrero y Jalisco, México

Ipomoea discoidea is described and illustrated as a new species from the states of Guerrero and Jalisco, Mexico. The new species shares close affinities with I. macdonaldii and I. lottiae, and is a creeper with widened, disk-shaped receptacle, fleshy calyx, hypocrateriform white corolla, exserted stamens and style, and seeds with long trichomes on the margins. Ipomoea discoidea grows in deciduous and subdeciduous forest.

Contribution to the aroma of white wines by controlled Torulaspora delbrueckii cultures in association with Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Although the positive role of non-Saccharomyces yeasts on the overall quality of wine is encouraging research into their oenological potential, current knowledge on the topic is still far from satisfactory. This work analyzes the contribution of starter cultures of Torulaspora delbrueckii, inoculated sequentially with Saccharomyces cerevisiae (multi-starter fermentation), on the fermentation and aromas of two different white style wines, i.e., dry and sweet wines. Chemical analysis of Soave and Chardonnay wines (dry wines) showed that multi-starter fermentation greatly affected the content of several important volatile compounds, including 2-phenylethanol, isoamyl acetate, fatty acid esters, C4-C10 fatty acids and vinylphenols. Moreover, strain-specific contributions have been shown by testing two different T. delbrueckii strains. Evidence of the positive impact of T. delbrueckii activity on wine quality was also demonstrated in Vino Santo, a sweet wine. Due to its low production of acetic acid, this non-Saccharomyces yeast is recommended for the fermentation of high sugar grapes. T. delbrueckii also influenced the content of different variety of chemical groups, including lactones. From a sensory perspective, all wines produced by multi-starter fermentation have greater aromatic intensity and complexity than wines resulting from a monoculture fermentation. These results emphasize the potential of employing T. delbrueckii, in association with S. cerevisiae, for the production of white wines of different styles with improved and enhanced flavour.

Evaluation of Different Gladiolus Cultivars under Union Council Bangoin Poonch AJ&K Conditions

The aim of the study was evaluated the performance of most suitable cultivar under the climatic conditions of Union council Bangoin Poonch Azad Kashmir. Eight cultivars of Gladiolus namely Amsterdam, Red beauty, White Prosperity, Fidelio, Nova Lux, High Style, Wind Song and Priscilla were evaluated for their adoptability and performance. Results on vegetative characteristics showed that cultivars White Prosperity, Amsterdam took less number of days for sprouting, Fidelio and Priscilla produced more plants per corm and White Prosperity obtained maximum plant height. Results on floral characteristics showed that cultivar White Prosperity and High Style were earlier for spike emergence, Priscilla and High Style took minimum days to flowering, maximum florets were produced by High Style and White Prosperity, White Prosperity obtained maximum spike length, High Style, Amsterdam, White prosperity and Red beauty remained attractive for longer time. Results on corm and cormels characteristics showed that High Style and Fidelio produced more bulbs, White Prosperity produced maximum cormels and gained maximum corm size, maximum corm weight was recorded in Fidelio. From the results we conclude that keeping in view the vegetative and reproductive characteristics White Prosperity, High Style and Fidelio are recommended for general cultivation.

Listening to WhitenessWhite Kids: Language, Race, and Styles of Youth Identity. By Mary Bucholtz. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2011.

Since the late 1990s, Mary Bucholtz has been a leading analyst of linguistic styling, gender, and race and their place in American youth identity construction. She has a terrific ear for the telling details of young people’s talk. Bucholtz has now brought together the many threads of her influential work in a much-anticipated monograph based on her ethnographic research in a multiracial Northern California high school, pseudonymously dubbed Bay City High School (BCHS), in the mid-1990s. White Kids examines how European American youth used the tools of language to construct a range of identities in a school that was experiencing racial turmoil. Bucholtz argues that these multiple styles of whiteness are all founded on calibrations of alignment with black and white youth cultures. She examines three emblematic local white styles: preppy mainstream, white hip-hop fans, and nerds. The analysis relies centrally on recorded interviews of 26 white students, along with maps of the schoolyard that she asked them to draw, a rewarding technique. Contextualizing the interviews in ethnographic observation, Bucholtz analyzes extracts from the transcripts in fine-grained interactional detail to unpack the identities and social worlds that these students negotiate. Limited quantitative analysis of a set of sociolinguistic variables rounds out the study. A central goal of the book is to demonstrate that the conceptual and methodological tools of sociocultural linguistics can enrich the study of identity across all the disciplines, showing in detail how language serves ongoing identity projects and is implicated in larger sociopolitical structures (p. 3). The book is intended to reach readers well beyond linguistic anthropology and sociolinguistics, and the presentation is well geared for such a broad audience. Crocus jablanicensis(Iridaceae), a New Species from the Republic of Macedonia, Balkan Peninsula

Crocus jablanicensis N. Randj. & V. Randj. sp. nova (Iridaceaeis described from the Balkan Peninsula. It is found on Mt. Jablanica in the western part of Macedonia, where it grows in alpine grasslands around snowmelts. It is compared with the morphologically similar C. cvijicii and C. veluchensis. In contrast to these species, C. jablanicensis has white styles and stigmas and a glabrous, white perianth throat.

White American Style in Rhyme

What follows is an experiment in presenting data in a nontraditional way. Accounts of the intraracial experiences of White college women were adapted to various traditional forms of poetry including the villanelle, rondeau, and roundel. These traditional 16th-century French poetry forms featured pastoral verses or tales of romance that were often sung and accompanied by music. However, in following the lead of 19th- and 20th-century English and American poets, the author uses the poetry styles to address serious issues of racial identification, identity negotiation, and enactment. The author employs the principles of variation, alliteration, and rhyming to underscore the impact of various ethnicities and nationalities in making Whiteness visible within the United States.

A new subspecies Crocus antalyensis subsp. striatus subsp. nov. from western Turkey is described. It is characterized by rough papery, light brown corm tunics, leaves that exceed the flower at anthesis and are recurved, distinctly striped inner perianth segments and deeply branched pale yellow or white style. The karyotype of the new subspecies is presented.

ISBN 978-0-375-89371-1 $16.99 Annie always loves spending summers at her grandparents’ North Carolina mountain cabin, but this year of 1963 has been marred by tragedy: her day-old baby sister has died without ever leaving the hospital. Annie’s mother is sunk into depression and her father is stationed overseas, so the eleven-year-old deals with her grief mostly on her own. She gradually finds friendship, however, with Miss Eliza, the old woman who’s returned to the abandoned cabin up Tater Hill; she’s shocked to discover that Miss Eliza is, in fact, the woman deemed a murderer by local rumor, but she learns that her friend’s story is deeper than childish lore had conveyed. While the story inclines toward the well-worn in places, it’s got some original touches, too: Miss Eliza was a woman stuck in an abusive marriage whose self-defense sent her to prison, and Annie’s mother faces the limited possibilities her era offers for treatment of depression. Annie’s own sadness at the lost possibilities of her much-anticipated baby sister is vividly conveyed (she takes to carrying around a smooth, cradle-able “rock baby” as consolation), and it’s also sad and believable that she’s largely on her own in facing it in light of the greater debility of her mother. The White Wine Mouthfeel Wheel: A Lexicon for Describing the Oral Sensations Elicited by White Wine

White wines can elicit a wide range of taste and mouthfeel sensations, some of which may be qualitatively different to those elicited by red wine. Through extensive sensory panel work involving 136 wines and 21 sessions, a lexicon, set of definitions, evaluation protocol and reference standards have been developed to describe and measure the oral sensations elicited by white wine, including table, sparkling, dessert and fortified styles. The lexicon has been visualised as a hierarchical wheel structure. These tools can be used to more fully define the influence of viticultural and oenological variables on white wine quality and to aid in the training of and communication between wine professionals.

Race, Worldviews, and Conflict Mediation: Black and White Styles of Conflict Revisited

The article offers a wide‐ranging, critical reflection on intercultural mediation theory and practice. Rather than following the standard format of literature review and discussion, the author uses his experiences as a mediator and researcher to frame the culture question and analyze intercultural practice models. We begin with the White American author's realization that culture is important, following a mediation session in which the other participants were Black. Reading Kochman's Black and White Styles in Conflict reinforced that realization, and, combined with other works, suggested a relatively straightforward relationship between culture and mediation managed through cultural competency. However, original field research on third‐party peacemaking in West Africa complicated the issue by indicating that worldviews and associated conflict styles are highly diverse, varying both within and across social groups. The second half of the paper examines the nature of cultural perspectives or worldviews and considers proposed methods for intercultural mediation. By analyzing prominent responses to the issue of sociocultural variation, the paper explores the challenge of creating a broadly applicable mediation methodology that addresses the complexity of worldviews.

The Black Arts Movement and African American Young Adult Literature: An Evaluation of Narrative Style

In this article I question whether or not African American young adult literature serves as a primer for, and a version of, African American adult literature. Using the Black Aesthetic as my literary theory and the Coretta Scott King Award as the young adult canon, I note that while the content of adolescent literature is consistent with the tenets of the Black Aesthetic and African American adult literature, the literary elements and style are not. As such, young readers of African American young adult literature are not necessarily prepared for the literary elements and style of canonical African American adult literature. Further, I note that editors, publishers, and literary critics may contribute to the construction of young adult literature, in that editors may discourage authors from experimenting with form and style. Finally, I call for reorienting Black children’s and adolescent literature away from White literary elements and style and toward Black literary elements and style.
