Web service-based application development has become a vital component of the modern in-formation technology ecosystem. The implementation of web services facilitates interoperability among diverse systems and platforms. REST API (REpresentational State Transfer Application Programming Interface) is one of the most popular architectures for creating efficient and scalable web services. This study examines the implementation of REST API in the development of web service-based applications. The case study focuses on the creation of a Web service-based Research Proposal Selection System. The REST API implementation method in this study adheres to the system development life cycle (SDLC) to ensure that the developed API meets business needs while being efficient, secure, and reliable. The analysis phase is conducted to gather both functional and non-functional REST API requirements. During the design phase, the REST API architecture is designed in detail, including how data will be transferred and processed, and how the API will interact with databases and other systems. Furthermore, in the implementation phase, the REST API is developed, ensuring that each endpoint operates correctly. In developing the Proposal Selection System, the implementation of web services integrates data from various existing sys-tems, including employee, academic, and research data. The system encompasses various features, such as proposal import, proposal mapping, proposal review, proposal assessment, proposal se-lection, and reporting. The research findings indicate that implementing the REST API simplifies the development of web service applications. The test results reveal that the average response time is relatively stable, measuring 31 ms without iterations and 29 ms with five iterations.

Online Guarantee System With Soma Methods

Web service-based applications are applications that use Restful to exchange data over the network and interact directly with other applications. One of the advantages of web service-based applications is that many applications can access services on different platforms. This is very beneficial in the business sector if a company or organization builds applications on a large scale, and application development is carried out in stages. With the characteristics of web service-based applications, namely a neutral platform, it is very easy to integrate systems when the development process is carried out in stages. Therefore, this research will design a web service-based application based on business processes, especially Kredit Usaha Rakyat (KUR) between PT ABC Credit Guarantee Company and PT Bank XYZ. The methods used are Thomas Erl's SOA methods and SOMA. The results obtained are a method that will be a guide for producing web service-based KUR Online Guarantee applications with PT Bank XYZ.

Creating and utilizing section-level Web service tags in service replaceability

Web Services are used as reusable components in different types of applications. The correct discovery, combination and sequential use are main problems in Web service-based applications. In order to solve these issues, service matchmaking, classification and clustering techniques are usually proposed including Web service tagging. However, more specific problems of service matchmaking, such as service replaceability, require annotation techniques at finer levels of granularity in order to draw more detailed conclusions on the service use. In this work, a technique for service annotation on Web service description sections is proposed that focuses on port type, operation and message sections. Different classification algorithms are employed in section-level tagging. The use of this technique in the service matchmaking problem of service replaceability is demonstrated. Both techniques have been evaluated on datasets of real Web Services demonstrating the usefulness of the automated process for section-level service annotation and of the suggested matches for service replaceability.

A Highly Accurate Prediction Algorithm for Unknown Web Service QoS Values

Quality of service (QoS) guarantee is an important component of service recommendation. Generally, some QoS values of a service are unknown to its users who has never invoked it before, and therefore the accurate prediction of unknown QoS values is significant for the successful deployment of web service-based applications. Collaborative filtering is an important method for predicting missing values, and has thus been widely adopted in the prediction of unknown QoS values. However, collaborative filtering originated from the processing of subjective data, such as movie scores. The QoS data of web services are usually objective, meaning that existing collaborative filtering-based approaches are not always applicable for unknown QoS values. Based on real world web service QoS data and a number of experiments, in this paper, we determine some important characteristics of objective QoS datasets that have never been found before. We propose a prediction algorithm to realize these characteristics, allowing the unknown QoS values to be predicted accurately. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm predicts unknown web service QoS values more accurately than other existing approaches.

MicroMAIS: executing and orchestrating Web services on constrained mobile devices

Mobile devices with their more and more powerful resources allow the development of mobile information systems in which services are not only provided by traditional systems but also autonomously executed and controlled in the mobile devices themselves. Services distributed on autonomous mobile devices allow both the development of cooperative applications without a back-end infrastructure and the development of applications blending distributed and centralized services. In this paper, we propose MicroMAIS: an integrated platform for supporting the execution of Web service-based applications natively on a mobile device. The MicroMAIS platform is composed of mAS and μ-BPEL. The former allows the execution of a single Web service, whereas the latter permits the orchestration of several Web services according to the WS-BPEL standard. S-MAS: An adaptive hierarchical distributed multi-agent architecture for blocking malicious SOAP messages within Web Services environments

During the last years the use of Web Service-based applications has notably increased. However, the security has not evolved proportionally, which makes these applications vulnerable and objective of attacks. One of the most common attacks requiring novel solutions is the denial of service attack (DoS), caused for the modifications introduced in the XML of the SOAP messages. The specifications of existing security standards do not focus on this type of attack. This article presents the S-MAS architecture as a novel adaptive approach for dealing with DoS attacks in Web Service environments, which represents an alternative to the existing centralized solutions. S-MAS proposes a distributed hierarchical multi-agent architecture that implements a classification mechanism in two phases. The main benefits of the approach are the distributed capabilities of the multi-agent systems and the self-adaption ability to the changes that occur in the patterns of attack. A prototype of the architecture was developed and the results obtained are presented in this study.

Problem solving methods in a global networked age

AbstractWe believe that the future for problem solving method (PSM) derived work is very promising. In short, PSMs provide a solid foundation for creating a semantic layer supporting planetary-scale networks. Moreover, within a world-scale network where billions services are used and created by billions of parties inad hocdynamic fashion we believe that PSM-based mechanisms provide the only viable approach to dealing the sheer scale systematically. Our current experiments in this area are based upon a generic ontology for describing Web services derived from earlier work on PSMs. We outline how platforms based on our ontology can support large-scale networked interactivity in three main areas. Within a large European project we are able to map business level process descriptions to semantic Web service descriptions, to enable business experts to manage and use enterprise processes running in corporate information technology systems. Although highly successful, Web service-based applications predominately run behind corporate firewalls and are far less pervasive on the general Web. Within a second large European project we are extending our semantic service work using the principles underlying the Web and Web 2.0 to transform the Web from a Web of data to one where services are managed and used at large scale. Significant initiatives are now underway in North America, Asia, and Europe to design a new Internet using a “clean-slate” approach to fulfill the demands created by new modes of use and the additional 3 billion users linked to mobile phones. Our investigations within the European-based Future Internet program indicate that a significant opportunity exists for our PSM-derived work to address the key challenges currently identified: scalability, trust, interoperability, pervasive usability, and mobility. We outline one PSM-derived approach as an exemplar.

A framework for QoS-based Web service contracting

The extensive adoption of Web service-based applications in dynamic business scenarios, such as on-demand computing or highly reconfigurable virtual enterprises, advocates for methods and tools for the management of Web service nonfunctional aspects, such as Quality of Service (QoS). Concerning contracts on Web service QoS, the literature has mostly focused on the contract definition and on mechanisms for contract enactment, such as the monitoring of the satisfaction of negotiated QoS guarantees. In this context, this article proposes a framework for the automation of the Web service contract specification and establishment. An extensible model for defining both domain-dependent and domain-independent Web service QoS dimensions and a method for the automation of the contract establishment phase are proposed. We describe a matchmaking algorithm for the ranking of functionally equivalent services, which orders services on the basis of their ability to fulfill the service requestor requirements, while maintaining the price below a specified budget. We also provide an algorithm for the configuration of the negotiable part of the QoS Service-Level Agreement (SLA), which is used to configure the agreement with the top-ranked service identified in the matchmaking phase. Experimental results show that, in a utility theory perspective, the contract establishment phase leads to efficient outcomes. We envision two advanced application scenarios for the Web service contracting framework proposed in this article. First, it can be used to enhance Web services self-healing properties in reaction to QoS-related service failures; second, it can be exploited in process optimization for the online reconfiguration of candidate Web services QoS SLAs.

On the design, implementation and application of an authorisation architecture for web services

This paper proposes an authorisation architecture for web services. It describes the architectural framework, the administration and runtime aspects of our architecture and its components for secure authorisation of web services as well as the support for the management of authorisation information. The paper then describes the implementation aspects of the architecture. The architecture has been implemented and integrated within the.NET framework. The authorisation architecture for web services is demonstrated using a case study in the healthcare domain. The proposed architecture has several benefits. First and foremost, the architecture supports multiple access control models and mechanisms; it supports legacy applications exposed as web services as well as new web service-based applications built to leverage the benefits offered by the Service-Oriented Architecture; it is decentralised and distributed and provides flexible management and administration of web services and related authorisation information. The proposed architecture can be integrated into existing middleware platforms to provide enhanced security to web services deployed on those platforms.

Service-Based Computing on Manets: Enabling Dynamic Interoperability of First Responders

Mobile ad hoc networks will form a critical part of the first-responder communications infrastructure. Empirical data shows how network-aware, autonomous, mobile agents can manage information services on live manet environments. A multidisciplinary team in Drexel University's College of Engineering has been working with local law enforcement and transportation officials to identify problems in enabling police, fire, security, and other public protectors to effectively communicate and collaborate in first-response situations. Development of the Philadelphia Area Urban Wireless Network Testbed (PA-UWNT) is part of this effort. The PA-UWNT is a mobile ad hoc network (manet) comprising mobile computers (PDAs, tablets, and laptops) and Web service-based applications. Our experience in the PA-UWNT project indicates that constructing such systems will require new research developments in computer networking, agent and service-based computing, and security that integrate each of these disciplines at several fundamental levels. In this paper, we outline part of this approach through experiments demonstrating the utility of integrating the network and agent layers and enabling agents to reason about the current operating context. We posit that autonomous agents that can reason about the network's slate and services offer an effective means of meeting the manet environment's challenges.
