This research aims to analyze and implement the utilization of Content Delivery Networks (CDN) and cloud computing services in web applications using Nginx Proxy Manager and Docker containers. This research uses experimental methods and case studies to analyze the performance of web applications before and after using CDN services and implementing the application in a cloud computing environment using Docker containers. Next, Nginx Proxy Manager is used to provide a user-friendly interface for configuring and managing Nginx proxy servers. Docker containers are used to manage web applications and proxy servers. In the CDN and cloud computing environment, Cloudflare Google Cloud Platform will be used as service providers. The results of this research indicate a significant improvement in the security and reliability of web applications after implementing CDN services and adopting a cloud computing environment. Additionally, this research provides insight into how to use Nginx Proxy Manager and Docker container to manage web applications efficiently and effectively in a cloud computing environment.

Algoritme penggantian cache proxy terdistribusi untuk meningkatkan kinerja server web

The performance of web processing needs to increase to meet the growth of internet usage, one of which is by using cache on the web proxy server. This study examines the implementation of the proxy cache replacement algorithm to increase cache hits in the proxy server. The study was conducted by creating a clustered or distributed web server system using eight web server nodes. The system was able to provide increased latency by 90 % better and increased throughput of 5.33 times better.

Tractable near-optimal policies for crawling

The problem of maintaining a local cache of n constantly changing pages arises in multiple mechanisms such as web crawlers and proxy servers. In these, the resources for polling pages for possible updates are typically limited. The goal is to devise a polling and fetching policy that maximizes the utility of served pages that are up to date. Cho and Garcia-Molina [(2003) ACM Trans Database Syst 28:390-426] formulated this as an optimization problem, which can be solved numerically for small values of n, but appears intractable in general. Here, we show that the optimal randomized policy can be found exactly in [Formula: see text] operations. Moreover, using the optimal probabilities to define in linear time a deterministic schedule yields a tractable policy that in experiments attains 99% of the optimum.

Web Proxy Auto Discovery for the WLCG

All four of the LHC experiments depend on web proxies (that is, squids) at each grid site to support software distribution by the CernVM FileSystem (CVMFS). CMS and ATLAS also use web proxies for conditions data distributed through the Frontier Distributed Database caching system. ATLAS & CMS each have their own methods for their grid jobs to find out which web proxies to use for Frontier at each site, and CVMFS has a third method. Those diverse methods limit usability and flexibility, particularly for opportunistic use cases, where an experiment’s jobs are run at sites that do not primarily support that experiment. This paper describes a new Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG) system for discovering the addresses of web proxies. The system is based on an internet standard called Web Proxy Auto Discovery (WPAD). WPAD is in turn based on another standard called Proxy Auto Configuration (PAC). Both the Frontier and CVMFS clients support this standard. The input into the WLCG system comes from squids registered in the ATLAS Grid Information System (AGIS) and CMS SITECONF files, cross-checked with squids registered by sites in the Grid Configuration Database (GOCDB) and the OSG Information Management (OIM) system, and combined with some exceptions manually configured by people from ATLAS and CMS who operate WLCG Squid monitoring. WPAD servers at CERN respond to http requests from grid nodes all over the world with a PAC file that lists available web proxies, based on IP addresses matched from a database that contains the IP address ranges registered to organizations. Large grid sites are encouraged to supply their own WPAD web servers for more flexibility, to avoid being affected by short term long distance network outages, and to offload the WLCG WPAD servers at CERN. The CERN WPAD servers additionally support requests from jobs running at non-grid sites (particularly for LHC@Home) which they direct to the nearest publicly accessible web proxy servers. The responses to those requests are geographically ordered based on a separate database that maps IP addresses to longitude and latitude.

In this study, we attempt to improve the performance of the web cache replacement policies such as SIZE and GDSF by applying the machine learning technique for enhancing the performance of the web proxy server. In the first part of this paper supervised learning method discriminative multinomial Naïve Bayes (DMNB) classifier is used to train and classify the web log data and forecast the classes of web objects to be revisited or not. In the second part, a discriminative multinomial Naïve Bayes (DMNB) classifier is incorporated with traditional web proxy caching policies to form novel caching approaches known as DMNB-SIZE and DMNB-GDSF. The inability of a region to access a webpage, because of the ban being placed on users from that region as a result of its location policy, has led to this study. This problem is often solved by anonymizing web traffic by using The Onion Router (TOR). These tools, however, suffer from the problem of exposure of identity and also lack the ability to monitor web users. This study describes in detail a web proxy server service solution within the context of a tertiary institution in Nigeria and explains how this service improves the user experience. An identity management system using a web proxy server was developed to tackle these problems. The new system proxy was designed using a transparent proxy model with some additional translational features where no modification was done to the response or request of resources, other than the addition of its identification information or that of the server from which the message was recovered, and mediation of resources. Redeemer’s University proxy was used as a case study in this research work. This system is also able to effectively monitor users’ (staffs and students) operations on the web. An Improved User Browsing Behavior Prediction using Regression Analysis on Web Logs

Web usage mining is widely used to discover the usage patterns from web log files. It deals with web log data which are taken from web servers, proxy server or client’s cache. By analyzing user’s browsing behavior, next web page prediction can be made. Various types of mining algorithms proposed over the years based on different techniques. But prediction of future request of the user mainly concern with its accuracy and efficiency. In this paper, we have proposed a new model for predicting the next web page. K-means clustering and Regression Analysis algorithms are used to predict the future request. These two algorithms in combination produce efficient and accurate results.

Effect of Temporal Relationships in Associative Rule Mining for Web Log Data

The advent of web-based applications and services has created such diverse and voluminous web log data stored in web servers, proxy servers, client machines, or organizational databases. This paper attempts to investigate the effect of temporal attribute in relational rule mining for web log data. We incorporated the characteristics of time in the rule mining process and analysed the effect of various temporal parameters. The rules generated from temporal relational rule mining are then compared against the rules generated from the classical rule mining approach such as the Apriori and FP-Growth algorithms. The results showed that by incorporating the temporal attribute via time, the number of rules generated is subsequently smaller but is comparable in terms of quality.

Machine Learning Based Architecture for Rule Establishment of Web Proxy Server

In present scenario Internet has become an integral part of every ones life, as many services like mail, news, chat are available and huge amounts of information on almost any subject is available. However, in most cases the bandwidth to connect to the Internet is limited. It needs to be used efficiently and more importantly productively. Generally, bandwidth is distributed among groups of users based on some policy constraints. However, it turns out that the users do not always use the entire allocated bandwidth at all times. Also, some times they need more bandwidth than the bandwidth allocated to them. Ideally, productive usage should be preferred over unproductive usage when bandwidth is scarce. But when it is abundant then any kind of use can be permitted provided it is in consonance with policy. The bandwidth usage patterns of users vary with time of the day, time of the year and requirements. So there is a need for dynamic allocation of bandwidth that satisfies the requirements of the users, manages variable usage and is consistent with administrative usage policy. Internet usage is varied and in the context of an institution or organization an administrator would like to maximize productive usage. There is, therefore, a need to implement control access policies, which prevents unproductive use but at the same time does not, to the extent possible, impose censorship. Squid proxy server is a full-featured web proxy, which increases the efficiency of the Internet link by providing caching and proxy services. Squid provides many mechanisms to set access control policies. However, deciding which policies to implement requires experimentation and usage statistics that must be processed to obtain useful data. The proposed architecture elaborated in this paper is based on machine learning to determine policies depending on the content of current URLs being visited. The main component in this architecture is the Squid traffic Analyzer, which classifies the traffic and generates URL lists. These URL lists are used in formulating access policies. The concept of delay priority will also be introduced which gives more options to system administrators in setting policies for bandwidth management. As Squid allows HTTP tunneling, it forms a loophole for strict policy management. In this paper the proxy tunneling in Squid has also been considered and some possible solutions to this problem will also be suggested.

Preface<br />The last eight months (May to December of 2011) have been very hectic for the UIC Research and Development Center since there were three research forums that we organized to facilitate the dissemination of 18 studies that appear in this issue (Volume 17 Number 2 October 2011) of our faculty research journal. The bulk of work that Ms. Emma V. Sagarino and I had to finish is hard to describe but we are thankful that despite of such challenge, we still finally get hold of this issue. Of course, the Research Committee and the Panel of Reviewers as well as all the writers are very significant to this effort. Without them, the release of this issue would have not been made possible. A million thanks to all of you!<br /><br />This particular issue is divided into six sections, namely Health, Engineering & Engineering Education, Curriculum & Instruction, Social Sciences, Science & Math Education, and Information Technology<br />Education.<br /><br />Three studies on Health led by Marlon B. Sepe, S. Ma. Remegia M. Cirujales and Emma V. Sagarino report about an innovative technology that can ensure a safe drinking water and alleviate poverty to the people in rural communities, the working conditions of Filipino nurses abroad, and the status of women’s health in selected banana plantations, respectively.<br /><br />The UIC Engineering Faculty has managed to complete three studies delving into the safety practices in engineering field and current instructional strategies directly affecting the engineering curricula. The researchers for Engineering and Engineering Education are Bryant S. Arante, Renan P. Limjuco collaborating with Fr. Francisco G. Glover and Isagani M. Mendez, and Neil C. Capricho with Michael M. Obenque and Fe Monique F. Musni. <br /><br />In the section Curriculum and Instruction, two studies concerning the intensification of instruction, curriculum, and research in UIC were authored by Alvin O. Cayogyog who worked with Reynaldo O. Cuizon, and Emma V. Sagarino with Deogracia B. Corpuz. The first study tackled constructs such as Capability, Culture, and Passion for research and their relationships to each other, while the second investigation analyzed the 5-year performance of the UIC BS in Accountancy graduates in CPA board examinations.<br /><br />Meanwhile, three research articles appear in Social Sciences section. One of them was done by Mona L. Laya and Jason N. Marquez, who described in their work the brand of leadership that is epitomized by Rodrigo<br />R. Duterte. Then, Bienvinido E. Infante and Maribeth Q. Galindo, leading the Social Science Faculty, documented the multi-faceted experiences of foreign students in UIC, and the team of Alvin O. Cayogyog and Ariel E. San Jose investigated the lived philosophies of LGU Officials in reference to their human core faculties.<br /><br />The section for Science and Math Education accommodates the scholarly works of Adorico M. Aya-ay, Orcheliza L. Paramo, and Renan P. Limjuco who shared the findings of their own investigations about the distribution and relative abundance of medium-sized arboreal mammals at Mt. Mahuson, Mount Apo, development and validation of teacher’s laboratory competence evaluation instrument, and creative learning enrichment for mathematics appreciation, respectively, to elevate the quality of science and mathematics education in the university.<br /><br />Three ICT researchers were highlighted in the section Information Technology Education. Shenna Rhea A. Maranguit, et. al., conducted a study entitled Developing a Server-Side Scripting Language Converter for Translating ColdFusion to PHP, while Eric John G. Emberda, et. al., completed their work Developing a Web Proxy Server Application to Minimize Cross-Site Scripting Attacks. Exander T. Barrios, et.al., contributed two different studies. They are entitled A Consolidated Web Browser Interface Using Multiple Browser Libraries for Testing Web Designs and Implementing Symmetric Cryptography on SMS Messaging for Generic Phone Using J2ME Platform. These four studies deal with software development which aims to offer new features to the existing applications available in the Internet. The designs were conceptualized involving several stages and upon consultation with software developers in the region as well as with the intended users of the proposed technologies.<br /><br />

Developing a Web Proxy Server Application to Minimize Cross-Site Scripting Attacks

<p>Stealing information from a user’s computer through the Internet is a growing concern. One type of Internet attacks or Cybercrime is Cross-Site Scripting or XSS. It allows an attacker to retrieve information from an Internet user by inserting a script to a vulnerable website where it automatically mines private data from the victim, then sends those data to another website. This study was conducted to examine the different vulnerable aspects of a website. A list of XSS-vulnerable websites was gathered, as well as a list of different XSS scripts. These websites were tested with the XSS scripts to determine the entry point to which the scripts can penetrate. A web proxy application was created which implements different mechanisms to prevent these XSS scripts from successfully mining private data. The web proxy application was able to minimize XSS attacks by comparing the scripts inside the website with the database of XSS scripts. The researchers however, recommend that the process of preventing XSS scripts be improved by adding artificially intelligent algorithms that will read patterns for XSS scripts and distinguish them from safe scripts.</p>

Remote laboratory of a quadruple tank process for learning in control engineering using different industrial controllers

AbstractEducation in technological disciplines requires students to be always in contact with real systems, where they can apply their theoretical knowledge. These systems tend to be expensive and the high initial investment is returned after a long time, as the resource can only be used by a limited number of students during the on‐site practical classes. The use of remote laboratories, which allow students to access the system through the Internet, optimizes resources by providing access to a larger number of users at any time. In this article, we present a remote laboratory of a quadruple‐tank industrial scale model, with real industrial equipment. The students carry out control activities on the system through the Internet as they would do in a laboratory classroom. The remote laboratory architecture is based on a three layer (physical layer–server layer–client layer) whose middle layer consists of four servers: Web Server, Proxy Server, Database Server, and Control Server. In the Control server, a link application based on OPC (Ole for Process Control) standard to select different industrial controllers which are connected to the scale model simultaneously has been implemented. Since the application is based on a standard, this structure can be expanded easily with other industrial controllers from other manufacturers. The remote laboratory is used in automatic and control subjects from different Spanish universities. Surveys conducted among the students about the use of Laboratory show that they perceive an improvement of their learning using the lab. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Intelligent Proxy Server in TANet/TWAREN

This paper studies the choice of web proxy servers. Usually there are plenty of proxy servers that are available to users, so it is important for users to choose the best proxy server. When visiting web servers in different countries, it is a common practice to divert the requests to different proxy servers in order to get better performance. However, generally the users do not exactly know which proxy server provides the fastest service for a specific website. Therefore, this paper proposes to run a priori speed tests in webpage retrieval, and choose the fastest proxy server according to the measurement. The experimental result shows that the performance of this strategy is better than the naive approach which simply makes up the decision according to the nationality of websites.

Estimation of Web Proxy Server Cache Size using G/G/1 Queuing Model

Continuous boost in the number of Internet users has taken an exponential escalation over the years. It is becoming thorny to endow with services to all the Internet users because of infrastructural precincts of WWW. Caching web object at proxy servers has proven to be one of the preeminent alternatives for fast services. Caching web proxy server improves the performance of overall web access. Since the introduction of Web proxy servers, most of the evaluations studies are performed either on Web-replacement algorithms or methodologies of maintaining the data in cache. Only few of studies have been done assuring Web proxy server cache size. This paper describes the methodology of estimating the cache size under high busty traffic situation. An investigational evaluation study applying M/M/1 Queuing Theory methodology is first appraised and then experimented. The study uses a trace-driven simulation framework, real traces containing approximately 1010 number of user's requests per unit time, and then evaluates the Optimal Cache Size (CSoptimal) using G/G/1 Queue Analysis.

Centralized Web Proxy Services: Security and Privacy Considerations

The widespread use of centrally controlled, externally run Web proxy services has several potential security issues related to privacy and deception, intranet information disclosure, and the creation of a single point of failure for widespread attacks. The author evaluates the security implications of such a Web proxy service from the viewpoints of users, organizations, and content providers. The discussion is illustrated with an analysis of Google's Web Accelerator, a free Web proxy service.

A clustering-based prefetching scheme on a Web cache environment

Web prefetching is an attractive solution to reduce the network resources consumed by Web services as well as the access latencies perceived by Web users. Unlike Web caching, which exploits the temporal locality, Web prefetching utilizes the spatial locality of Web objects. Specifically, Web prefetching fetches objects that are likely to be accessed in the near future and stores them in advance. In this context, a sophisticated combination of these two techniques may cause significant improvements on the performance of the Web infrastructure. Considering that there have been several caching policies proposed in the past, the challenge is to extend them by using data mining techniques. In this paper, we present a clustering-based prefetching scheme where a graph-based clustering algorithm identifies clusters of “correlated” Web pages based on the users’ access patterns. This scheme can be integrated easily into a Web proxy server, improving its performance. Through a simulation environment, using a real data set, we show that the proposed integrated framework is robust and effective in improving the performance of the Web caching environment.

Design and evaluation of web proxies by leveraging self-similarity of web traffic

In this paper a new concept for the analysis of communication systems and their performance is presented. Our point of view is that insights in system workload can help in developing new methods for improving the perceived system performance. From measurements, we gained ideas about the typical request pattern. These obtained insights have been used in developing new methods for improving the system performance. To validate these new approaches, simulations have been used. First, we present a fitting algorithm which directly deals with measurement data instead of an intermediate heavy-tailed distribution. This method provides good results for approximating the object-size distribution as well as the performance measures in an M∣ G∣1 queue. The results of the fitting procedure allow a classification of the considered events; they provide a perfect classification of the space of data sizes in different classes. Furthermore, we develop a new caching algorithm, class-based, least recently used (C-LRU), with the aim to obtain a good balance between small and large documents in the cache. Similarly, the new scheduling algorithm, class-based interleaving weighted fair queueing (CI-WFQ), exploits the distribution of the object sizes being requested to set its parameters such that good mean response times are obtained and starvation does not occur. We have found that both methods are suitable for the use in Web proxy servers, and present, in many cases, an improvement over the yet existing strategies. For the comparison of the methods, we have used trace-driven simulations. Both algorithms are parameterized using information on the requested object-size distribution. In this way, they can be seen as potentially adaptive to the considered workload.

웹 프락시 서버에서 디스크 I/O는 병목현상을 일으키는 주요 요소이다. 오늘날 대부분의 웹 프락시 서버는 범용 파일 시스템에서 실행되도록 설계되어 있다. 그러나 범용 파일 시스템은 웹 캐시 워크로드에서 대부분 차지하는 작은 파일들을 효과적으로 처리하지 못하기 때문에 전체 웹 프락시 서버의 성능을 저하시키게 한다. 본 논문에서는 범용 파일 시스템을 사용하지 않는 원시(raw) 디스크 I/O 기법이 웹 프락시 서버의 디스크 I/O 오버헤드 개선에 얼마나 영향을 미치는지 그 성능 잠재력을 평가한다. 이를 위해 웹 프락시 서버를 위한 저장관리 시스템인 BSMS(Block-structured Storage Management System)를 설계하고 Squid 소스에 적용시켜 웹 프락시 서버를 구현하였다. 다양한 실험 평가를 통해 원시 디스크 I/O 기법이 웹 프락시 서버에서 디스크 I/O의 성능을 크게 개선시키는 좋은 방법임을 보였다. Disk I/O is a major performance bottleneck of web proxy server. Today's most web proxy sowers are design to run on top of a general purpose file system. But general purpose file system can not efficiently handle web cache workload, small files, leading to the performance degradation of entire web proxy servers. In this paper we evaluate the performance potential of raw disk to reduce disk I/O overhead of web proxy servers. To show the performance potential of raw disk, we design a storage management system called Block-structured Storage Management System (BSMS). And we also actually implement web proxy server that incorporate BSMS in Squid. Comprehensive experimental evaluations show that raw disk can be a good solution to improve disk I/O performance significantly for web proxy servers.
