Extreme Web Caching for Faster Web Browsing

Modern web pages are very complex; each web page consists of hundreds of objects that are linked from various servers all over the world. While mechanisms such as caching reduce the overall number of end-to-end requests saving bandwidth and loading time, there is still a large portion of content that is re-fetched -- despite not having changed. In this demo, we present Extreme Cache, a web caching architecture that enhances the web browsing experience through a smart pre-fetching engine. Our extreme cache tries to predict the rate of change of web page objects to bring cacheable content closer to the user.

Performance Analysis of Hybrid Web Caching Architecture

The development of next-generation wireless networks combine with the radio network techniques which use technology such as GSM, GPRS, 3G (UMTS, CDMA2000), LTE, WLAN, and WiMAX. It requires the construction and expansion in time of high-speed telecommunication channels for the level of the internet service provider (ISP). In fact, in many developing countries and in Vietnam, the investment rate increased bandwidth capacity can not enough for the demand use the Internet as economic issues, investment procedures. Web caching architecture is one of the effective solutions to save bandwidth while ensuring to satisfy strong demand for internet access. Hybrid web caching architecture (hybrid web caching architecture) is a solution that is used by networks because it takes advantage of the strengths of the web caching architecture stratification and dispersion, reducing connection time and transmission time, helping internet service providers to plan and save network resources at each level in an optimal way. This paper propose a novel produce to hybrid web caching architecture based on the determined time at each level of web-winning network and web time overall winner of the ISP network with n-level network.

Tulip: A New Hash Based Cooperative Web Caching Architecture

With the exponential growth of WWW traffic, web proxy caching becomes a critical technique for Internet web services. Well-organized proxy caching systems with multiple servers can greatly reduce the user perceived latency and decrease the network bandwidth consumption. Thus, many research papers focused on improving web caching performance with the efficient coordination algorithms among multiple servers. Hash based algorithm is the most widely used server coordination mechanism, however, there's still a lot of technical issues need to be addressed. In this paper, we propose a new hash based web caching architecture, Tulip. Tulip aggregates web objects that are likely to be accessed together into object clusters and uses object clusters as the primary access units. Tulip extends the locality-based algorithm in UCFS to hash based web proxy systems and proposes a simple algorithm to reduce the data grouping overhead. It takes into consideration the access speed dispatch between memory and disk and replaces expensive small disk I/O with less large ones. In case a client request cannot be fulfilled by the server in the memory, the system fetches the whole cluster which contains the required object into memory, the future requests for other objects in the same cluster can be satisfied directly from memory and slow disk I/Os are avoided. It also introduces a simple and efficient data dupllication algorithm, few maintenance work need to be done in case of server join/leave or server failure. Along with the local caching strategy, Tulip achieves better fault tolerance and load balance capability with the minimal cost. Our simulation results show Tulip has better performance than previous approaches.

Adaptive schemes for distributed web caching

In distributed web caching architectures, institutional proxies take advantage of their neighbors’ contents in order to reduce the number of requests forwarded to the server. Intuitively, the maximum benefit from this cooperation is expected when the proxies that exhibit similar requests are grouped together. The current practice is to follow a static and manual configuration of neighbors. Such an approach has a number of drawbacks: (i) static allocation may not determine the best neighbors, especially if global knowledge of the participating proxies is not available, (ii) a manual allocation places significant administrative burden, (iii) static schemes are insensitive to changes in access patterns, and (iv) they cannot deal with the introduction of new, potentially useful, proxies. In this paper, we propose a set of algorithms that allow proxies to independently explore the network for better neighbors and continuously update their configuration in an adaptive fashion. The simulation experiments illustrate that dynamic neighbor reconfiguration leads to significantly higher hit ratios compared to the static approach. Although some researchers in the past have recognized the need for adaptive caching, to the best of our knowledge this is the first study to propose concrete algorithms and evaluate their efficacy.

Time-domain analysis of Web cache filter effects

This paper uses trace-driven simulation to study the traffic arrival process for Web workloads in a simple Web proxy caching hierarchy. Both empirical and synthetic Web proxy workloads are used in the study. The simulation results show that a Web cache reduces both the peak and the mean request arrival rate for Web traffic workloads, while the variance-to-mean ratio of the filtered traffic typically increases, depending on the input arrival process and the configuration of the cache. If the input traffic is self-similar, then the filtered request traffic remains self-similar, with the same Hurst parameter, though with reduced mean. Finally, we find that a Gamma distribution provides a flexible and robust means of modeling aggregate workloads in hierarchical Web caching architectures, for a broad range of workload characteristics and Web proxy cache sizes. To demonstrate the generality and effectiveness of the modeling approach, we present a detailed example of filter effects and traffic superposition in a two-level Web caching hierarchy with heterogenous input workloads. The Gamma modeling results match well with the results from trace-driven simulations.

Hierarchical Web caching systems: modeling, design and experimental results

This paper aims at finding fundamental design principles for hierarchical Web caching. An analytical modeling technique is developed to characterize an uncooperative two-level hierarchical caching system where the least recently used (LRU) algorithm is locally run at each cache. With this modeling technique, we are able to identify a characteristic time for each cache, which plays a fundamental role in understanding the caching processes. In particular, a cache can be viewed roughly as a low-pass filter with its cutoff frequency equal to the inverse of the characteristic time. Documents with access frequencies lower than this cutoff frequency have good chances to pass through the cache without cache hits. This viewpoint enables us to take any branch of the cache tree as a tandem of low-pass filters at different cutoff frequencies, which further results in the finding of two fundamental design principles. Finally, to demonstrate how to use the principles to guide the caching algorithm design, we propose a cooperative hierarchical Web caching architecture based on these principles. Both model-based and real trace simulation studies show that the proposed cooperative architecture results in more than 50% memory saving and substantial central processing unit (CPU) power saving for the management and update of cache entries compared with the traditional uncooperative hierarchical caching architecture.

A unifying co‐operative web caching architecture

AbstractNetwork caching of objects has become a standard way of reducing network traffic and latency in the web. However, web caches exhibit poor performance with a hit rate of about 30%. A solution to improve this hit rate is to have a group of proxies form co‐operation where objects can be cached for later retrieval. A co‐operative cache system includes protocols for hierarchical and transversal caching. The drawback of such a system lies in the resulting network load due to the number of messages that need to be exchanged to locate an object. This paper proposes a new co‐operative web caching architecture, which unifies previous methods of web caching. Performance results shows that the architecture achieve up to 70% co‐operative hit rate and accesses the cached object in at most two hops. Moreover, the architecture is scalable with low traffic and database overhead. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Analysis of Web caching architectures: hierarchical and distributed caching

Cache cooperation improves the performance of isolated caches, especially for caches with small cache populations. To make caches cooperate on a large scale and effectively increase the cache population, several caches are usually federated in caching architectures. In this paper, we discuss and compare the performance of different caching architectures. In particular, we consider hierarchical and distributed caching. We derive analytical models to study important performance parameters of hierarchical and distributed caching, i.e., client's perceived latency, bandwidth usage, load in the caches, and disk space usage. Additionally, we consider a hybrid caching architecture that combines hierarchical caching with distributed caching at every level of a caching hierarchy. We evaluate the performance of a hybrid scheme and determine the optimal number of caches that should cooperate at each caching level to minimize client's retrieval latency.

A scalable Web cache consistency architecture

The rapid increase in web usage has led to dramatically increased loads on the network infrastructure and on individual web servers. To ameliorate these mounting burdens, there has been much recent interest in web caching architectures and algorithms. Web caching reduces network load, server load, and the latency of responses. However, web caching has the disadvantage that the pages returned to clients by caches may be stale , in that they may not be consistent with the version currently on the server. In this paper we describe a scalable web cache consistency architecture that provides fairly tight bounds on the staleness of pages. Our architecture borrows heavily from the literature, and can best be described as an invalidation approach made scalable by using a caching hierarchy and application-level multicast routing to convey the invalidations. We evaluate this design with calculations and simulations, and compare it to several other approaches.
