‘HARDNESS TESTS IN DENTISTRY’- AN EPIGRAMMATIC REVIEW

In the field of dentistry, several types of hardness tests are used to assess the mechanical properties of dental materials. These tests provide valuable information about a material's resistance to indentation, wear, and deformation. Hardness tests help dental professionals select appropriate materials for specific applications, ensuring that the chosen materials can withstand the functional demands of the oral environment. The hardness of dental materials often correlates with their wear resistance, strength, and overall performance, making hardness testing an essential part of material evaluation. There are many tests are in practice to test the hardness of various dental materials. Few of the tests are using in very regular practice to test the hardness. Hence this terse review aimed to discuss various commonly using hardness tests in dentistry, their indications, advantages and disadvantages.

Mechanical properties of CoCrFeNi-X (X = Ti,Sn) high entropy alloy and tribological properties in simulated seawater environment

Five multimajor element CoCrFeNi-X(X = Ti,Sn) high entropy alloys (HEA) were prepared by vacuum hot press sintering. The phase composition, mechanical properties and tribological properties of CoCrFeNi-X(X = Ti,Sn) alloys in simulated seawater were investigated. The phase structure of CoCrFeNiTi high-entropy alloy is solid solution FCC phase, R phase, σ phase, and Laves phase. But after addition Sn elements, the phase structure become the FCC phase and Ni-Sn solid solution phase. CoCrFeNiTi alloy has lower density (7.17 g/cm3) and higher hardness (750 HV) than that of CoCrFeNiSn. The compressive yield strength of CoCrFeNiTi HEA is better than CoCrFeNiSn HEA. The CoCrFeNiSn high-entropy alloys showed lower wear rates. The main reason is that SnO2 is generated on the wear scar surface, which has good wetting and corrosion inhibition effects, so CoCrFeNiSn HEA shows better wear resistance in simulated seawater. The main wear mechanism of the CoCrFeNiSn HEA is abrasive wear, oxidative wear, exfoliation wear and corrosive wear.

Formation of Structural-Phase State and Elastic and Durometric Properties of Biocompatible Cold-Rolled Titanium Ti–Nb–Zr-Based Alloys during Aging

The methods of scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and microindentation are used to study the effect of alloying with zirconium (within 3 to 6 at %) and complex Zr + Sn and Zr + Sn + Ta additions on the evolution of the structure, phase composition, and properties (effective modulus of elasticity, hardness, and wear-resistance parameters) of quenched biocompatible β-titanium (at %) Ti–6% Nb–% Zr, Ti–6% Nb–% Zr, Ti–6% Nb–% Zr, Ti–6% Nb–% Zr–% Sn, and Ti–6% Nb–% Zr–% Sn–0.7Ta alloys during aging (at 400°C for 4, 16, and 64 h) after multipass cold rolling with a total degree of strain of 85%. As compared to the quenching, the cold rolling of the studied Ti–b–r alloys is shown to suppress the occurrence of the β → ω transformation in the course of aging and to favor the acceleration of the decomposition of β solid solution with the formation of nonequilibrium αl phase in the course of aging. The increase in the zirconium content from 3 to 6 at % in the cold-rolled ternary Ti–6% Nb –х% Zr alloys and introduction of complex Zr + Sn and Zr + Sn + Ta additions to the Ti–6% Nb alloy instead of only zirconium addition hinder the decomposition processes of the β phase during aging; this impacts the intensity of variations of the effective modulus of elasticity and microhardness. The aging of the cold-rolled alloys under study was found to allows us to obtain the higher values of the parameters H/Er and (Н is the hardness and Er is the resolved modulus of elasticity) associated with the wear resistance as compared to those for the widely used medical Ti–Al–V alloy. The compositions of the alloys and conditions of their treatment are determined, which allow us to obtain the combination of the highest-level properties.

Tribological and investigation study of a dlc-coated H13 friction drilling tool on AZ31B magnesium alloy

IntroductionFriction drilling is an innovative method in hole-making for sheet metal applications, thin sheets of conventional structural alloy materials like copper, titanium, steel etc., even though there are other methods, such as thermal distortion for the welding of nuts, riveting of nuts, and threading. For the last hundred years, researchers have focused on studying the development of this technique to maintain strength, hole roughness, hole geometry, hardness etc. It is interested in finding solutions for wear, tool life, and plastic deformation.MethodFriction drilling is also called a green hole-making process because this process uses the friction between the rotating tool and the workpiece. In this research, instead of regular HSS and Tungsten Carbide tools, the H13 tool steel is used, because the H13 steel tool has unique chemical compositions like chromium and molybdenum, which give high toughness, hot hardness, and wear resistance. Diamond-like-carbon (DLC) coating has been used in this research to enhance tool life and AZ31B magnesium alloy is used as the work material. Initially, in this research, the wear stability of the DLC-coated H13 tool was investigated, and later, the tool surface roughness and hole quality were verified.Results and DiscussionThe material loss observed for the DLC-coated H13 steel tool in the pin-on-disk test was 0.05 g. This investigation used two different diameter tools, namely 3 and 7 mm. Research has concluded that the 7 mm tool is better for friction drilling by seeing the roughness and hole quality. However, the conditions were that the spindle should rotate at 4,000 rpm and the feed rate of the tool to be at 200 mm/rev.

A novel strategy to significantly improve wear resistance of amorphous alloys by immersion in NaOH solution

The application of amorphous alloys in tribology is constrained by their inherent brittleness. An alkaline treatment (AT) can address this limitation by hydrogen generated rejuvenation. Following AT in a 3 mol/L NaOH solution for 3 days, the hardness of as-cast Ti-based amorphous alloys decreased by about 10 %, while the relaxation enthalpy increased approximately 2.2 times. Concurrently, the average coefficient of friction (COF) decreased by more than 15 % under all test loads except at 10 N. Additionally, the wear rate significantly decreased by over 20 %, with a notable reduction of about 25 % under a 7 N load. The improvements in tribological properties are primarily attributed to increased plasticity and surface oxidative ability, resulting from the hydrogen absorption during chemical reactions. Thus, AT offers a practical and effective way to significantly enhance the tribological performance of amorphous alloys.

Exploring wear, corrosion, and microstructure in PEO coatings via laser surface treatments on aluminum substrates

The inadequate resistance to corrosion and wear of Al-based alloys is a major hindrance to their extensive use. Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO), a common and efficient coating technique, creates an oxide coating similar to ceramic on the surface of Al-based alloys, thereby improving their ability to withstand corrosion and wear. Studies have shown that PEO treatment can significantly enhance the short-term corrosion and wear resistance of Al-based alloys. To improve the long-term corrosion resistance of PEO coatings, researchers are now exploring the combination of laser processes with the PEO process. Laser processing is a simple yet efficient technique known for its flexibility, precision, and control. Various laser procedures are recognized for their ability to improve the resistance to wear and corrosion of PEO coatings applied on Al substrates and their alloys. Laser melting procedures have the capability to standardize and modify the microstructure of aluminum-based alloys. This review focuses on enhancing the anti-corrosion and anti-wear properties of aluminum alloys through the integration of laser surface treatments with PEO technology.

Evaluation of Micro Hardness of Magnesium Alloy Coated with ZnO and Al2O3

Magnesium and its alloys have wide range of application in automobile and aircraft industries because of their excellent mechanical properties i.e. high strength to weight ratio, availability and good castability etc. However, some challenges occur in using magnesium in aquas service applications, due to its highly reactive nature and low tribological properties such as low wear and corrosion resistance. In this work an experimental study has been done on uncoated and ceramic coated AZ91 alloy to compare hardness and wear properties of both. The coating was applied on varying weight percentage of ZnO and Al2O3ceramic particles. The effect of presence of ceramic particles on the surface of substrate was studied using scanning electron microscope. Micro Vickers hardness test and wear tests were conducted on the samples, and it was found that coating of ceramic particles made the surface harder and wear resistant as compared to the uncoated Mg alloy. Contribution of Al2O3 particles plays an importantrole in increasing the hardness and wear resistance of coated surface. A decrease of 84% in coefficient of friction, increase in wear resistance by 99% and increase in micro hardness by 92% was reported for Al2O3 coated sample as compared to the uncoated surface.

High-temperature oxidation resistance and wear properties of functionally graded CrHfNbTaTiN high-entropy nitride coating on Ti alloy

High-entropy nitrides have emerged as promising alternatives to traditional protective coatings due to their excellent comprehensive properties. However, there is still a long-standing technical challenge in the design and manufacture of hard and high-temperature stable high-entropy nitride coatings. This study utilized first-principles calculations to evaluate the thermodynamic stability between high-entropy nitrides and corresponding high-entropy metals, as well as titanium alloy substrates, confirming the rationality of the structural design of the functional gradient high-entropy ceramic coating. Subsequently, a double-glow plasma surface alloying technique were conducted to prepare a CrHfNbTaTiN functional gradient high-entropy ceramic coating on titanium alloy, followed by high-temperature cyclic oxidation experiments and high-temperature ball-on-disk wear tests. The research demonstrates that the gradient composition coating exhibits strong interfacial bonding, with an adhesion strength of around 40 N. It maintains excellent oxidation resistance in environments below 700 °C and displays good high-temperature wear resistance. This study contributes to providing insights and guidance for the further development of high-temperature, high-hardness, and wear-resistant materials.

Effects of chemical etching on surface structure and tribological behavior of silicate substrates

Abstract This study investigated the effect of chemical etching on the surface structure and tribological behavior of silicate substrates. Silicate surfaces were etched using a mixture of nitric acid (HNO3) and ammonium bifluoride (NH4HF2) for durations ranging from 1 to 60 min. The etched surfaces were characterized using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, surface profilometry, water contact angle measurements, and UV–vis spectroscopy to evaluate the changes in surface morphology, roughness, wettability, and optical properties. Tribological performance was assessed using reciprocating ball-on-plate friction tests. The results showed that increasing the etching time resulted in the formation of microscale surface features, increased surface roughness, enhanced hydrophilicity, and reduced optical transmittance. The average friction coefficient decreased with an increase in the etching time up to 30 min, beyond which a slight increase was observed. The 1-minute etched specimen exhibited the best wear resistance with the narrowest wear track and the least material removal. The improved tribological performance was attributed to the formation of a stable transfer film, reduced real contact area, and entrapment of wear debris. This study highlights the potential of chemical etching as a technique to tailor the surface structure and tribological properties of silicate materials for various applications.

Increasing the Wear and Corrosion Resistance of a CP-Ti Surface by Plasma Electrolytic Borocarburizing and Polishing

The paper examines the possibility of increasing the wear and corrosion resistance of a CP-Ti surface by duplex plasma electrolytic treatment (borocarburizing and polishing). The structure and composition of diffusion layers, their microhardness, surface morphology and roughness, wear resistance during dry friction and corrosion resistance in Ringer’s solution were studied. The formation of a surface-hardened layer up to 200 μm thick with a microhardness of up to 950 HV, including carbides and a solid solution of boron and carbon, is shown. Subsequent polishing makes it possible to reduce surface roughness and remove weak areas of the porous oxide layer, which are formed during high-temperature oxidation in aqueous electrolyte vapor during borocarburizing. Changing the morphology and structural-phase composition of the CP-Ti surface helps reduce weight wear by a factor of three (the mode of frictional interaction changes from microcutting to oxidative wear) and corrosion current density by a factor of four after borocarburizing in a solution of boric acid, glycerin and ammonium chloride at 950 °C for 5 min and subsequent polishing in an ammonium fluoride solution at a voltage of 250 V for 3 min.

Investigation on effects of nano-reinforcement on the mechanical properties, fatigue, and microstructural analysis of dissimilar AA6061- Mg AZ31B weld joints

Weld joints have been subject to substantial improvement in mechanical durability and wear resistance in recent years. This research work challenge can be answered by incorporating nano-materials into the weld zone. Mechanical and metallurgical aspects of friction stir welded (FSW) butt joints made of AA6061 aluminum and Mg AZ31B alloys have been examined in this work, both with and without the use of naturally derived biochar nanoparticles. The biochar particle was extracted from rice husk. Throughout the whole weld joint manufacturing process, a tool with a rotational speed of 1400 rpm, a welding speed of 40 mm min−1, and a tapered pin profiled tool were employed. During the joint fabrication process, the constant axial load of 7 kN, plunge depth of 0.2 mm, and constant dwell time of 0.3 s were also maintained. In order to improve the mechanical attributes of the weld joints, different wt% of biochar such as 1%, 2%, and 3%, were applied at the interface region of the weld joints. The experimental results revealed that the percentage of reinforced nano-materials plays a significant effect in improving the weld joint qualities. The testing results of reinforced friction stir-welded joint qualities were compared to those of simple friction stir welded joints made without and with adding the nanoparticles. The best results were obtained when 2 wt% of biochar particles was added to the weld interface region. The presence of biochar nano-particles, in addition to their contribution to increased grain refinement in the weld nugget region, was also seen in the region. It was discovered that the event distribution of particles at the nugget zone significantly enhanced the mechanical and wear resistance qualities of the weld joints that were manufactured. The optical microscope was used to analyze the microstructures in the weld nugget region, and a scanning electron microscope (SEM) was utilized to examine the fracture analysis of the tensile samples. The presence of 2 wt% biochar particles in the weld nugget region resulted in a considerable increase in the mechanical characteristics of the weld connections. The ultimate tensile strength, hardness, and yield strength of the weld nugget results 197 MPa, 173 HV, 163 MPa. Overall, when compared to the qualities of the base material and plain weld joints. The mechanical properties and wear resistance of the weld joints have improved significantly. When biochar particles were used as reinforcement particles during the fabrication phase of the joint, a mechanism for pinning was observed in the weld microstructure.

Influences of Sr(OH)2 on the Structure and Corrosion Resistance of Micro‐Arc Oxidation Coatings Formed on TC4 Titanium Alloy

ABSTRACTIn order to improve the comprehensive properties of TC4 titanium alloy, micro‐arc oxidation (MAO) coating is prepared on the surface of a TC4 substrate in a basic electrolyte with varying concentrations of Sr(OH)2. The surface morphology, phase composition, element distribution, and corrosion resistance of MAO coatings are analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, X‐ray diffraction, an energy‐dispersive spectrometer, the electrochemical test, and the erosion–corrosion test. The results show that the voltage of the MAO process increases and then decreases; the surface morphology and density of the coatings are greatly improved after doping Sr(OH)2. When the concentration of Sr(OH)2 is 0.6 g L−1, the thickness, hardness, and adhesion strength of the coating reach the maximum values of 37.04 μm, 836.2 HV, and 21.8 N, respectively. At this time, the wear resistance and corrosion resistance are the best, and the friction coefficient and the corrosion rate are the lowest: 0.3352 and 1.04 × 10−10 mm a−1, respectively.

A Tribological Study of CrN and TiBN Hard Coatings Deposited on Cobalt Alloys Employed in the Food Industry

In this work, a comparative study of the tribological performance of two hard coatings, CrN/TiBN, was conducted for research purposes and industrial applications in food products, particularly for food packaging into cans using the double hermetic sealing process. CrN and TiBN coatings were successfully deposited on a base-cobalt metal substrate of a CoCrW commercial alloy using physical vapor deposition by arc evaporation (AEPVD) technology to improve the tribological properties of the commercial alloy, including wear and corrosion resistance, lower coefficient of friction, and overall durability. This research focuses on conducting scratch and abrasion wear resistance tests in dry conditions; specifically, it pursues to evaluate the wear corrosion properties, known as tribocorrosion performance, on CrN/TiBN hard coatings. The experimental results show that the CrN coating (2.9 μm) is slightly thicker than the TiBN coating (2.7 μm), with a 47 N critical load. It also shows a lower coefficient of friction (CoF) in a dry environment, while the TiBN coating showed total detachment and a high coefficient of friction in a dry environment condition. Tribocorrosion testing in brine aqueous solution indicated that CrN coating shows a high friction coefficient with a higher open circuit potential value (Ecorr), and TiBN shows the lowest corrosion potential (Ecorr) and the lowest friction coefficient. This suggests that CrN could provide better corrosion protection for commercial cobalt alloys and improve tool performance during the food canning process in brine environments.

An investigation on tribology performance of Abutilon Indicum fibre reinforced polymer composites

This research work investigates the tribological characteristics of Abutilon Indicum Fiber (AIF) reinforced composites with epoxy as the binding agent. The Abutilon Indicum fiber reinforced composites were manufactured by compression molding technique. These composites were fabricated by varying the fiber volume fraction ranging from 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% respectively and considering the fiber length as a fixed factor due to its short length. This research paper illustrates the effects of different fiber volume fractions (5,10,15 and 20%) on the tribological properties such as Specific wear rate (SWR) and Coefficient of friction (µ) of Abutilon Indicum fiber reinforced composites. Sliding wear tests were carried out under dry environment conditions with pin-on-disc wear testing machine. The experiments were performed for each composite with different combinations of testing parameters, sliding loads (10, 20 and 30 N); sliding distances (1,2 and 3 km); sliding speeds (1,2 and 3 m/s). Shore D hardness of 78.22 is determined to be higher for 15% volume fraction of AIF composites. Results conclude that the addition of AIFs in these composites enhanced the tribological performance with good wear resistance in relation with the pure epoxy-based composites with 15% volume fraction of AIFs displaying best results with higher resistance to wear at various operating conditions. Composites produced with 20% volume fraction displays the effects of fiber agglomeration which in turn has an inverse effect on hardness; limits the wear resistance with higher friction and wear rate and such results agree well with the wear debris, pits and contact patches in micrographs. Optimal fiber volume fraction of 15% was suggested in fabrication of composites for usage of AIFs as friction material.

Studies on tribological behavior of aluminum hybrid composites strengthened with MoS2 and wheat husk ash

The current study examines the dry sliding wear characteristics of a hybrid aluminum matrix composite reinforced with wheat husk ash (WHA) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), produced through the squeeze casting technique. Experiments were conducted utilizing Taguchi's L27 (3)13 orthogonal array, with input parameters including applied load (20, 30, 40 N), sliding speed (1, 2, 3 m/s), reinforcement percentage (wt. 2.5, 5% and 7.5%), while wear and friction coefficient were observed as measurable responses. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) results highlighted that the reinforcement percentage had the most significant impact on the wear behavior of the hybrid composite. Notably, the (Al/5WHA/5MoS2) hybrid composite exhibited superior wear resistance (129 µm), accompanied by a 27% increase in hardness compared to the parent metal. Surface morphology analysis of worn-out specimens depicted the presence of fine grooves, delamination, and cracks.

Maximizing efficiency in C45 steel machining: an integrated AI-based approach to coated insert optimization

AbstractMachining involves the subtraction of the material from the sample workpiece to achieve the desired shape or surface. This versatile method is capable of producing a wide range of parts, varying from simple to intricate profiles. Coating materials are increasingly being utilized in tool inserts in the production industry owing to their superior thermal properties and wear resistance. The shielding of hard coatings, with thicknesses of only a few microns, enhances performance and durability. In this study, machining of C45 steel using distinct coated inserts was explored. The experimental trials employed PVD and CVD methods for coated tungsten carbide (WC) tools/inserts and PVD-coated cermet tools/inserts with different machining parameters. Performance metrics, such as the surface finish and reliability of the tool, were considered for the evaluation. The average tool life variation between the PVD-coated cermet and PVD-coated WC was 178.86%, and 30.11% between the PVD-coated cermet and CVD-coated WC at 1 mm DOC. ANOVA was performed using Response Surface Methodology to explore the influence of input parameters on output. The results indicate that the depth of machining and spindle speed significantly influence Ra, whereas spindle speed and type of tool insert have a considerable impact on the life span of the tool. The developed mathematical model for the prediction of tool life and Ra indicates its potential for performance forecasting during C45 steel machining. Grey relation analysis was employed to optimize the process parameters. Optimal results were achieved with a spindle speed of 400 m/min, 0.5 mm depth of cut, and cermet tool inserts. PVD-coated WC inserts performed better. ANFIS was applied for the prediction and optimization of the machining parameters.

Research on the laser melting coating process of an AlCoCrFeNi high‐entropy alloy

AbstractLaser cladding technology is an advanced surface modification technique that has gained significant attention in various fields due to its energy savings, efficiency, and environmental friendliness. This paper discusses the preparation of AlCoCrFeNi high‐entropy alloy (HEA) coatings on the surface of a 5083 aluminum alloy using laser cladding technology under the Ar gas conditions. An orthogonal test system was used to optimize the laser cladding process parameters. The microstructure, as well as the mechanical, frictional, and electrochemical properties of the HEA coatings, were comparatively analyzed under the two process conditions S4 and S10. The results indicate that, under S10, the HEA coatings exhibit optimal surface quality. The coatings contained a mixture of Face‐centered cubic (FCC) and Body‐centered cubic (BCC) phases. Microscopic examination revealed three distinct areas: dark, gray, and off‐white. The coatings can significantly improve the wear and corrosion resistance of the alloy substrate. For the best results, it is set the laser power to 200 W, the laser scanning distance to .05 mm, and the laser scanning rate to 1250 mm/s. This present study offers a novel technical foundation for the fabrication of HEA coatings.

Feasibility of Using Ferronickel Slag as a Sustainable Alternative Aggregate in Hot Mix Asphalt

Ferronickel slag (FNS) is a byproduct produced during ferronickel alloy manufacturing, primarily used in the manufacturing of stainless steel and iron alloys. This material is produced by cooling molten slag with water or air, posing significant disposal challenges, as improper storage in industrial yards can lead to environmental contamination. This study investigates the chemical and mineralogical characteristics of reduction ferronickel slag (RFNS) and its potential use as an alternative aggregate in hot mix asphalt (HMA). The research is based on the practical application of HMA containing RFNS in an experimental area, specifically the parking lot used by buses transporting employees of Anglo American, located at the Codemin Industrial Unit in Niquelândia, Goiás, Central Brazil. Chemical analysis revealed that RFNS primarily consists of MgO, Fe2O3, and SiO2, which are elements with minimal environmental impact. The lack of significant calcium content minimizes concerns about expansion issues commonly associated with calcium-rich slags. The X-ray diffractogram indicates a predominantly crystalline structure with minerals like Laihunite and Magnetite, which enhances wear and abrasion resistance. HMA containing 40% RFNS was tested using the Marshall methodology, and a small experimental area was subsequently constructed. The HMA containing RFNS met regulatory specifications and technological controls, achieving an average resilient modulus value of 6323 MPa. Visual inspections conducted four years later confirmed that the pavement remained in excellent condition, validating RFNS as a durable and effective alternative aggregate for asphalt mixtures. The successful application of RFNS not only demonstrates its potential for local road paving near industrial areas but also underscores the importance of sustainable waste management solutions. This research highlights the value of academia–industry collaboration in advancing environmentally responsible practices and reinforces the contribution of RFNS to enhancing local infrastructure and promoting a more sustainable future.

Sustainable Diamond Burnishing of Chromium–Nickel Austenitic Stainless Steels: Effects on Surface Integrity and Fatigue Limit

This study aims to evaluate the influence of lubrication and cooling conditions in the diamond burnishing (DB) process on the surface integrity and fatigue limit of chromium–nickel austenitic stainless steels (CNASSs) and, on this basis, identify a cost-effective and sustainable DB process. Evidence was presented that DB of CNASS performed without lubricating cooling liquid satisfies the requirements for a sustainable process: the three key sustainability dimensions (environmental, economic, and social) are satisfied, and the cost/quality ratio is favorable. DB was implemented with the same values of the main governing factors; however, four different lubrication and cooling conditions were applied: (1) flood lubrication (process F); (2) dry without cooling (process D); (3) dry with air cooling at a temperature of −19 °C (process A); and (4) dry with nitrogen cooling at a temperature of −31 °C (process N). Conditions A and N were realized via a device based on the principle of vortex tubes. All four DB processes provide mirror-finished surfaces with Ra roughness parameter values from 0.041 to 0.049 μm, zones with residual compressive stresses deeper than 0.5 mm, and increases in the specimens’ fatigue limit (as determined by the accelerated Locati’s method) compared to turning and polishing. Processes F and D produce the highest microhardness on the surface and at depth. The process D introduces maximum compressive residual axial and hoop stresses in the surface layer. The dry DB processes (D, A, and N) form a submicrocrystalline structure with high atomic density, which is most strongly developed under process D.
