Stability analysis of nonlinear localized modes in the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations with [Formula: see text] -symmetric Scarf-II potential.

We study the nonlinear localized modes in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with parity-time-symmetric Scarf-II potential, which can be described by the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. Firstly, we investigate the linear stability of the nonlinear modes in the focusing and defocusing cases, and get the stable and unstable domains of nonlinear localized modes. Then we validate the results by evolving them with 5% perturbations as an initial condition. Finally, we get stable solitons by considering excitations of the soliton via adiabatical change of system parameters. These findings of nonlinear modes can be potentially applied to physical experiments of matter waves in Bose-Einstein condensates.

Solitary Vortex Dynamics of 2D Bose-Einstein Condensates with Higher-Order Nonlinear Interactions

For study of Continuous matter waves in Bose-Einstein condensates in nonlinear and quantum atom optics, the two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) is chosen as the reliable model for studying the dynamics of vortices in the framework of mean-field theory. In related problems in several recent studies showing that higher-order interrelationships are an indispensable component of the GPE even at the mean-field level, by numerically estimating the vortex dynamics variables. In this paper, derive the vortex soliton solutions using the variational method and investigate the effect of higher-order nonlinear corrections on the behavior of the vortex dynamics, which are shown to have an important impact on the vortex dynamics behavior.

Rydberg-dressed solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates with parity-time symmetry

Generating stable bright solitons in free space has been a long-standing goal in the study of matter waves in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). Rydberg-induced matter wave demonstrates an excellent effect in balancing the repulsive and attractive interactions between remote atoms. Parity-time (PT) symmetric lattices have been widely studied in controlling the flow of matter waves. In this study, we theoretically investigated the localization of nonlinear matter waves in the PT-symmetric Rydberg atomic BECs system. The numerical simulation method was used to obtain the stationary solutions of the wave function by solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) of the Rydberg-dressed BECs system. Fundamental, higher-order solitons and vortical ones were uncovered, and their stabilities were evaluated through linear-stability analysis and direct simulation with perturbation. Furthermore, the collision of solitons exhibited a quasi-elastic feature.

Chirped nonlinear waves in the cubic-quintic distributed nonlinear Schrödinger equation with external trap, self-steepening and self-frequency shift

A cubic-quintic inhomogeneous nonautonomous nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with an external trap, self-steepening, and self-frequency shift that models the transmission of nonlinear waves in nonautonomous inhomogeneous systems is considered. The integrability conditions under which the equation is converted into the standard NLS equation are obtained and a variety of nonlinear wave solutions with nonlinear chirping such as one-soliton solution, two-soliton solution, Akhmediev breather (AB) solution, Ma breather (MB) solution, as well as first- and second-order rogue wave (RW) solution are reported. We show how various parameters of either the model equation or the solutions may affect the nature of nonlinear waves with their frequency chirps propagating in nonautonomous inhomogeneous systems modeled by the NLS equation under consideration. The density profiles of nonlinear waves obtained from all these solutions are analyzed. These solutions are used for investigating analytically the dynamics of nonlinear waves in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with both two- and three-body interatomic interactions when the gain/loss of atoms is taken into consideration. Considering BEC systems with time-independent trap frequency, we show that under a constant gain/loss parameter, the trap parameter can be used to convert triplet second-order RWs into either doublet second-order RWs or a composite of one bright solitary wave and a doublet second-order RWs. Also, our results reveal that for BECs with constant trap frequency under kink-like gain/loss parameter, the trap parameter can be used to convert (i) triplet second-order RWs into single second-order RWs, and (ii) two-soliton into doublet rogue wave. The family of chirped nonlinear wave solutions presented in this work may prove significance for designing the manipulation and transmission of nonlinear waves. Also, the found here results may provide possibilities to manipulate experimentally some nonlinear waves such as rogue waves or two-soliton in BEC systems.

Solitary waves explore the quantum-to-classical transition

How the classical appearance of our environment arises from the underlying quantum many-body theory is an open fundamental question. We propose that phenomena involved in the quantum-to-classical transition can be probed in collisions of bright solitary waves in Bose-Einstein condensates, where thousands of atoms form a large compound object at ultra cold temperatures. For the experimentally most relevant quasi-1D regime, where integrability is broken through effective three-body interactions, we find that ensembles of solitary waves exhibit complex interplay between phase coherence and entanglement generation in beyond mean-field simulations using the truncated Wigner method: An initial state of two solitons with a well-defined relative phase looses that phase coherence in the ensemble, with its single-particle two-mode density matrix exhibiting similar dynamics as a decohering two-mode superposition. This apparent decoherence is a prerequisite for the formation of entangled superpositions of different atom numbers in a subsequent soliton collision. The necessity for the solitons to first decohere is explained based on the underlying phase-space of the quintic mean-field equation. We show elsewhere that superpositions of different atom numbers later further evolve into spatially entangled solitons. Loss of ensemble phase coherence followed by system internal entanglement generation appear in an unusual order in this closed system, compared to a typical open quantum system.

Search for rogue waves in Bose-Einstein condensates via a theory-guided neural network

An important and incompletely answered question is whether machine learning methods can be used to discover the excitation of rogue waves (RWs) in nonlinear systems, especially their dynamic properties and phase transitions. In this work, a theory-guided neural network (TgNN) is constructed to explore the RWs of one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates. We find that such method is superior to the ordinary deep neural network due to theory guidance of underlying problems. The former can directly give any excited location, timing, and structure of RWs using only a small amount of dynamic evolution data as the training data, without the tedious step-by-step iterative calculation process. In addition, based on the TgNN approach, a phase transition boundary is also discovered, which clearly distinguishes the first-order RW phase from the non-RW phase. The results not only greatly reduce computational time for exploring RWs, but also provide a promising technique for discovering phase transitions in parameterized nonlinear systems.

Quantum simulation of rogue waves in Bose-Einstein condensate: An exact analytical method

A quantum simulator environment is considered in Bose-Einstein condensate under bichromatic optical lattice, manifesting rogue waves. We report an exact analytical model to produce rogue wave excitations, the dynamics of which is investigated by solving the corresponding scalar Gross-Pitaevskii equation. A qualitative understanding of the formation mechanism at various trap parameters is provided by assuming the rogue wave excitation as a mixture of bright and dark solitary waves, which offers a novel illustration of the previous conjecture for rogue waves in Bose-Einstein condensate. We identify the lattice parameters for controlling the spatio-temporal variations of the condensate density. An Anderson-like localization is identified where the condensate is seen to preserve the rogue wave nature at the central frustrated site for larger lattice frustration.

Solitary matter wave in spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates with helicoidal gauge potential.

We analytically and numerically study the different types of solitary wave in the two-component helicoidal spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). Adopting the multiscale perturbation method, we derive the analytical bright and dark solitary wave solutions of the system, and the stationary and moving bright (dark) solitary waves are obtained. The effects of spin-orbit coupling, the helicoidal gauge potential, the momentum, the Zeeman splitting, and the atomic interactions on the solitary wave types are discussed, and it is found that the coupling of these physical parameters can manipulate different types of solitary waves in the system. The results indicate that the helicoidal gauge potential breaks the symmetric properties of the energy band of the system and adjusts the energy band structure, thus further effecting the solitary wave properties, i.e., stationary or moving solitary wave, bright, or dark solitary wave. Correspondingly, the analytical predictions for exciting stationary or moving bright (dark) solitary wave in parameter space are obtained. In particular, the helicoidal gauge potential changes the solitary wave types drastically for the weak spin-orbit coupling, i.e., in the absence of the helicoidal gauge potential, only dark (bright) solitary wave solutions exist in the system with repulsive (attractive) atomic interaction; however, in the presence of the helicoidal gauge potential, both dark and bright solitary waves can exist in the system regardless of whether the atomic interaction is repulsive or attractive. In addition, we investigate the stability of solitary waves and obtain the stability regions of different types of solitary waves by applying the linear stability analysis. The dynamic evolution results of the solitary waves by the direct numerical simulation not only validate the linear stability analysis but also confirm the analytical prediction of the solitary waves. Finally, the collision effects between solitary waves are also presented by the numerical simulation. It is shown that the interactions between solitary waves in the system have both elastic and inelastic collisions, which are closely related to the position of solitary wave states in the linear energy band. Our results provide a potential way to adjust the types of solitary waves in BECs with helicoidal gauge potential.

Phase engineering of chirped rogue waves in Bose–Einstein condensates with a variable scattering length in an expulsive potential

We consider a cubic Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation governing the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with time-dependent coefficients in front of the cubic term and inverted parabolic potential. Under a special condition imposed on the coefficients, a combination of phase-imprint and modified lens-type transformations converts the GP equation into the integrable Kundu-Eckhaus (KE) one with constant coefficients, which contains the quintic nonlinearity and the Raman-like term producing the self-frequency shift. The condition for the baseband modulational instability of CW states is derived, providing the possibility of generation of chirped rogue waves (RWs) in the underlying matter-wave (BEC) model. Using known RW solutions of the KE equation, we present explicit first- and second-order chirped RW states. The chirp of the first- and second-order RWs is independent of the phase imprint. Detailed solutions are presented for the following configurations: (i) the nonlinearity exponentially varying in time; (ii) time-periodic modulation of the nonlinearity; (iii) a stepwise time modulation of the strength of the expulsive potential. Singularities of the local chirp coincide with valleys of the corresponding RWs. The results demonstrate that the temporal modulation of the s-wave scattering length and strength of the inverted parabolic potential can be used to manipulate the evolution of rogue matter waves in BEC.

Interactions of Soliton in Weakly Nonlocal Nonlinear Media

Solitary waves or solitons is a nonlinear phenomenon which has been studied intensively due to its application in solid-state matter such as Bose-Einstein condensates state, plasma physics, optical fibers and nematic liquid crystal. In particular, the study of nonlinear phenomena occurs in the structure of waves gained interest of scholars since their discovery by John Russell in 1844. The Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation (NLSE) is the theoretical framework for the investigation of nonlinear pulse propagation in optical fibers. Nonlocality can be found in an underlying transport mechanisms or long-range forces like electrostatic interactions in liquid crystals and many-body interactions with matter waves in Bose-Einstein condensate or plasma waves. The length of optical beam width and length of response function are used to classify nonlocality in optical materials. The nonlocality can be categorized as weak nonlocal if the width of the optical beam broader than the length of response function and if the width of the optical beam is narrower than the length of response function, it is considered as highly nonlocal. This work investigates the interactions of solitons in a weakly nonlocal Cubic NLSE with Gaussian external potential. The variational approximation (VA) method was employed to solve non integrable NLSE to ordinary differential equation (ODE). The soliton parameters and the computational program are used to simulate the propagation of the soliton width and its center-of-mass position. In the presence of Gaussian external potential, the soliton may be transmitted, reflected or trapped based on the critical velocity and potential strength. Direct numerical simulation of Cubic NLSE is programmed to verify the results of approximation method. Good agreement is achieved between the direct numerical solution and VA method results.

Approximate nonlinear wave solutions of the coupled two-component Gross–Pitaevskii equations with spin–orbit interaction

Recent experimental observations of spin–orbit coupling (SOC) in Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) open the way for investigating novel physics of nonlinear waves with promising applications in atomic physics and condensed matter physics. The interplay between atomic interactions and SOC are crucial for the understanding of the dynamics of nonlinear waves in BECs with SOC. Here, in the small linear coupling regime, an approach is presented which allows us to derive an infinite number of novel approximate solutions of the Gross–Pitaevskii equations (GPEs) in one and two dimensions including SOCs, time-dependent external potentials, and nonlinearities leading to breathers and periodic as well as quasiperiodic nonlinear waves. To verify the theoretical predictions we perform numerical simulations which show for several cases a very good agreement with the analytics. For the case of one spatial dimension, it is shown that functions describing the external potential and nonlinearities cannot be chosen independently. The management of the solutions is clarified along with some important physical properties such as Josephson oscillations and Rosen–Zener oscillations.

Quenched solitons and shock waves in Bose-Einstein condensates

The Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) formed by ultracold atomic gases provides an ideal platform for studying various quantum phenomena. In this platform, researchers have explored in depth the important equilibrium and steady phenomena including superfluidity, vortices, and solitons, and recently started to study nonequilibrium problems. In a classical system, nonequilibrium problems, such as explosion, usually occur together with shock waves, which is presented when the explosion speed is larger than the local sound speed. For BEC systems which possess quantum properties, how to produce and understand the shock waves becomes a hot research topic. In this work, we systematically discuss the possibility of quantum shock wave and its essential mechanism in a one-dimensional BEC initially containing dark solitons through quenching interactions. When the system is quenched to the limit of non-interaction, we analytically obtain the post-quench dynamics of initially immobile dark solitons, and find the existence of shock wave, which can be explained through the quantum interference effect. When the system is quenched to finite interaction, we find similar phenomena through numerically solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, and analyze different situations. When the system is quenched to a finite weaker interaction, the situation is similar to a non-interaction case; when the system is quenched to a stronger interaction, the shock wave is accompanied by the splitting of the initial soliton, and the two objects can synchronously change; specifically when the quenched ratio of strength is an integer squared, the shock wave disappears, and the soliton is split perfectly. We further explore the properties of the shock wave including its amplitude and speed, and obtain the full scenario as the quenched interaction varies. This work provides theoretical guidance for realizing and measuring shock wave in experiment.

Rogue waves of the dissipative Gross–Pitaevskii equation with distributed coefficients

By introducing a suitable ansatz and employing the similarity transformation technique, we construct the first- and second-order rational solutions for a quasi-one-dimensional (1D) dissipative Gross–Pitaevskii (GP) equation with a time-varying cubic nonlinearity and an external time-dependent potential. Then, by using these solutions, we engineer first- and second-order rogue waves in the Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) contexts for the experimentally relevant systems when the gain/loss of atoms is taken into consideration. Our analysis shows that the control of the scattering length, the external harmonic, and the linear trapping potentials allows one to manage the motion and the background of dissipative rogue matter waves in BEC systems. We show that the wave amplitudes depend on the absolute value of s-wave scattering and the bias magnetic field, while its motion depends on the external trapping potentials. We show that unlike classical rogue waves, the nonzero continuous wave backgrounds of non-autonomous forced (damped) rogue matter waves in BECs with time-dependent complicated potential increases (decreases) during the wave motion. Our results also reveal that neither the gain nor the loss of the BEC atoms affects the amplitude of the rogue matter waves during their propagation. Our results may help to control and manage experimentally dissipative rogue waves in a BEC systems.

Optical solitons and stability analysis with coupled nonlinear schrodinger’s equations having double external potentials

We consider coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equation (CNLSE) of the Gross-Pitaevskii-type, with linear mixing and nonlinear cross-phase modulation. Motivated by the study of matter waves in Bose-Einstein condensates and multicomponent (vectorial) nonlinear optical systems, we investigate the eigenvalue problem of the CNLSE with double external potentials in a self-defocusig Kerr medium. For this system, we obtain different kinds of wave structures induced by two injected beams, of physical relevance in nonlinear optics and Bose-Einstein condensation. Exact solutions are found by the extended unified method. The linear stability of these solutions is analyzed through the formulation of an eigenvalue problem. The spectral problem is constructed by perturbing the frequency of stationary solutions and by linearizing the resulting equations near the stationary (or steady) states. Our study may simulate experimental work on multiple injected laser beams in a medium with Kerr-type nonlinearity.

Collision of rarefaction waves in Bose-Einstein condensates

We consider the problem of expansion of Bose-Einstein condensate released form a box. On the contrary to the standard situation of release from a harmonic trap, in this case the dynamics is complicated by a process of collision of two rarefaction waves propagating to the center of the initially uniform distribution. Complete analytical solution of this problem is obtained by Riemann method in hydrodynamic dispersionless approximation and the results are compared with the exact numerical solution of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

On the ground-state energy of a finite inhomogeneous degenerate Bose gas

The ground-state energy of a finite inhomogeneous system of bosons located in a scalar external field was found within the framework of the self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation, on the basis of the representation of the second quantization without using the formalism of anomalous averages. The ground-state wave function corresponds to the stationary Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the Bose-Einstein condensate wave function. It was shown that the ground-state energy can be found using the energy determined by the stationary Gross-Pitaevskii equation only for a system that satisfies the thermodynamic limit.

Stochastic method for calculating the ground-state one-body density matrix of trapped Bose particles in one dimension

The one-body density matrix (OBDM) is a fundamental contraction of the Bose-Einstein condensate wave function, encapsulating its one-body properties. It serves as a major analysis tool with which the condensed component of the density can be identified. Despite its cardinal importance, calculating the ground-state OBDM of trapped interacting bosons is a challenge and to date OBDM calculations have been published only for homogeneous systems or for trapped weakly interacting bosons. In this paper we discuss an approach for computing the OBDM based on a double-walker diffusion Monte Carlo random walk coupled with a stochastic permanent calculation. We here describe the method and study some of its statistical convergence and properties applying it to some model systems.

Bose–Einstein condensate wave function and nonlinear Schrödinger equation

The nonlinear Schrodinger equation for the ground-state wave function of an inhomogeneous boson system is derived in the self-consistent Hartree–Fock approximation without the use of the formalism of anomalous averages. The results obtained correspond to the Gross–Pitaevskii equation for the Bose–Einstein condensate wave function when using the delta-shaped boson interaction potential.

Onset of transverse instabilities of confined dark solitons

We investigate propagating dark soliton solutions of the two-dimensional defocusing nonlinear Schr\"odinger or Gross-Pitaevskii (NLS-GP) equation that are transversely confined to propagate in an infinitely long channel. Families of single, vortex, and multilobed solitons are computed using a spectrally accurate numerical scheme. The multilobed solitons are unstable to small transverse perturbations. However, the single-lobed solitons are stable if they are sufficiently confined along the transverse direction, which explains their effective one-dimensional dynamics. The emergence of a transverse modulational instability is characterized in terms of a spectral bifurcation. The critical confinement width for this bifurcation is found to coincide with the existence of a propagating vortex solution and the onset of a ``snaking'' instability in the dark soliton dynamics that, in turn, give rise to vortex or multivortex excitations. These results shed light on the superfluidic hydrodynamics of dispersive shock waves in Bose-Einstein condensates and nonlinear optics.

Quasi one-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensate in a gravito-optical surface trap

We study both static and dynamic properties of a weakly interacting Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) in a quasi one-dimensional gravito-optical surface trap, where the downward pull of gravity is compensated by the exponentially decaying potential of an evanescent wave. First, we work out approximate solutions of the Gross–Pitaevskii equation for both a small number of atoms using a Gaussian ansatz and a larger number of atoms using the Thomas–Fermi limit. Then we confirm the accuracy of these analytical solutions by comparing them to numerical results. From there, we numerically analyze how the BEC cloud expands non-ballistically, when the confining evanescent laser beam is shut off, showing agreement between our theoretical and previous experimental results. Furthermore, we analyze how the BEC cloud expands non-ballistically due to gravity after switching off the evanescent laser field in the presence of a hard-wall mirror which we model by using a blue-detuned far-off-resonant sheet of light. There we find that the BEC shows significant self-interference patterns for a large number of atoms, whereas for a small number of atoms, a revival of the BEC wave packet with few matter-wave interference patterns is observed.
