Beam swinging coherent Doppler wind lidar utilizing wavelength switching through a single telescope.

We have developed a new, to the best of our knowledge, beam swinging coherent Doppler wind lidar (BS-CDWL) by employing a wavelength switching method using mass-produced components for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical communication systems. This BS-CDWL also has a single and position-to-angle conversion telescope for multiple LOS measurement which contributes to cost-effectiveness. Preliminary wind sensing result is shown with measurable range of up to 350 m.

Full C- and L-band covered second-order OAM mode generator based on a thinned helical long-period fiber grating

A full C- and L-band covered second-order orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) mode generator has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated, which is realized by using a helical long-period fiber grating (HLPG) but inscribed in a thinned four-mode fiber. By optimizing the design of grating period and fiber diameter of the proposed HLPG, an ultra-broadband rejection filter with a depth of ∼23 dB, a bandwidth of ∼156 nm @-10 dB (ranging from 1522 nm to 1678 nm) and a bandwidth of ∼58 nm @-20 dB (ranging from 1574 nm to 1632 nm), has been successfully obtained as a typical sample. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of such ultra-broadband second-order OAM mode generator by using only one fiber component, i.e., the thinned HLPG. In addition, the proposed generator is less polarization-dependent and less temperature-sensitive than those of the conventional HLPGs, which is believed to be considerably helpful to find potential applications of the device itself in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and OAM mode division multiplexing (MDM) optical fiber communication systems.

Wavelength division multiplexing visible light communication with wide incident angle enabled by perovskite quantum dots

In this paper, a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) visible light communication (VLC) system based on the perovskite quantum dots (QDs) with two different fluorescence wavelengths is demonstrated. This system consists of a transmitter, free space channel and a receiver. The NRZ-OOK (non-return-zero on-off-keying) signals are transmitted in this channel to achieve WDM visible light communication at a transmission distance of 60 cm, with a maximum transmission capacity of 100 Mbps in the field of view of 80°. In addition, computational temporal ghost imaging (CTGI) algorithm is used to reduce the bit error rate (BER) of the received signals and improve maximum transmission angle to 120°. The proposed WDM system paves the way for visible light communication in free space.

A Comprehensive Study on EDFA Gain Flattening for WDM Transmission using Cascaded Fiber Bragg Gratings

The gain flattening of optical amplifiers plays a crucial role in optical Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) communication systems, ensuring uniform amplification across all channels. This study focuses on investigating the gain flattening characteristics of Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFAs) using cascaded Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) in the C-band wavelength range. A comparative analysis of various optical amplifiers revealed that EDFA exhibited the highest gain variation, making it an optimal choice for gain flattening. The key parameters to achieve optimal EDFA gain flattening include the wavelengths of the channels, EDFA length, noise figure (NF), and the number of cascaded FBGs. Simulation experiments are conducted using Optisystem software (ver. 14.2) and the obtained results reveal that EDFA gain flatness can be achieved within the wavelength range of 1531 to 1533 nm, utilizing an EDFA length of 6 m and 12 cascaded FBGs. These findings contribute to the advancement of gain flattening techniques in optical WDM systems, enhancing their performance and reliability.

MIMO Systems with Neural Networks in OFDM-Based WDM Visible Light Communications

In this paper, we describe a wavelength-division multiplexing visible-light communication (VLC) system using two colored light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with similar emission wavelengths. A multi-input multi-output signal-separation method using a neural network is proposed to cancel the optical cross chatter caused by the spectral overlap of LEDs. The experimental results demonstrate that signal separation using neural networks can be achieved in wavelength-multiplexed VLC systems with a bit error rate of less than 3.8 × 10-3 (forward error correction limit). Furthermore, the simulation results reveal that the carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) is improved by 2 dB for the successive interference canceller (SIC) compared to the zero-forcing method.

4*10 Gbps WDM communication system based on a tunable V-cavity semiconductor laser.

This paper is about the V-cavity tunable semiconductor laser with a 1550 nm band used as a transmitter to build a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical fiber communication link. In the experiment, a 20 km optical fiber communication link with a reasonable eye diagram and low bit error rate (BER) transmitted by 40 Gbps can be established. The experimental results show that a single laser can achieve a wavelength tuning range of 25 nm, reach 32 channels at a 100 GHz frequency interval, and the average side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) is above 39 dB. The advantages and application potential of V-cavity tunable semiconductor laser (VCL) for wavelength routing in optical communication networking are verified by experiments.

Narrow linewidth semiconductor multi-wavelength DFB laser array simultaneously self-injection locked to a single microring resonator.

We experimentally demonstrate a narrow linewidth semiconductor multi-wavelength distributed feedback (DFB) laser array by simultaneously injection locking each laser to the corresponding resonance of a single on-chip microring resonator. The white frequency noises of all the DFB lasers is reduced by more than 40 dB once they are simultaneously injection locked to a single microring resonator with a quality factor (Q-factor) of 2.38 million. Correspondingly, the instantaneous linewidths of all the DFB lasers are narrowed by a factor of 104. In addition, frequency combs originating from non-degenerate four-wave mixing (FWM) between the locked DFB lasers are also observed. Simultaneously injection locking multi-wavelength lasers to a single on-chip resonator may enable the possibilities of integrating a narrow-linewidth semiconductor laser array on a single chip and having multiple microcombs in a single resonator, which are in high demand in wavelength division multiplexing coherent optical communication systems and metrological applications.

High-Performance 32-Channel Silicon Arrayed Waveguide Grating With 100 GHz Spacing

A high-performance 32-channel silicon arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) with 100 GHz spacing is designed and fabricated using 180-nm lithography platform for massive production. For the arrayed waveguides, a rectangular structure compositing of a straight waveguide and a 90-degree bend waveguide is designed. Moreover, the overall structure only needs to be etched once to reduce the error introduced in the fabricating process. The experiment results show that the AWG operates with high performance within short, central, and long wavelength bands (i.e., S+C+L bands). Taking the measured central wave band (C band) as an example, a channel uniformity of 2.05 dB, a crosstalk lower than -20 dB, and an insertion loss less than 4.85 dB are achieved across the wavelength range from 1544 nm to 1576 nm. As far as we know, this fabricated silicon AWG demonstrates the best comprehensive performance for <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$32\times 100$ </tex-math></inline-formula> -GHz channels achieved using lithography, which will be highly desirable for wavelength division multiplexing communication and microwave photonics systems.

Performance analysis of an SDM-WDM multicore optical fiber link

Analytical evaluation of inter-channel and inter-core coupling induced crosstalk including Amplified Spontaneous Emission (ASE) noise in a single mode 7-core homogeneous multi-core optical fiber (MCF) based Space Division Multiplexed Wavelength Division Multiplexing (SDM-WDM) communication system with distributed Raman amplifier is presented. The Stimulated Raman Scattering (SRS) induced crosstalk impairment including ASE noise and inter-core and inter-channel coupling induced crosstalk at the output of any core with excitation into other core of the MCF is investigated. Signal to Crosstalk plus Noise Ratio (SCNR) is determined at the output of photo detector of the excited core. Finally, Bit Error Rate (BER) performance results are evaluated for different system parameters, viz. WDM channel number, channel spacing, propagation distance, pump power etc. It is noticed that BER deteriorates with SRS induced crosstalk and ASE noise, which is worsened further by the effect of inter-core crosstalk (IC-XT). The maximum acceptable propagation distance for a desired value of BER and other system parameters considering inter-channel crosstalk (Ich-XT), IC-XT including SRS induced crosstalk and ASE noise is also evaluated analytically. For example, to maintain a particular BER (10E-9, say) we need to increase the input signal power from 2.5dBm to 5.5dBm while increasing the WDM channels from 12 to 16 considering only the SRS and ASE noise. On the other hand, we need to increase the input signal power from 5.5dBm to 9.0dBm to increase the WDM channels from 12 to 16 when the IC-XT is added up with the SRS and ASE noise. The maximum allowable pump power considering the collective impact of Ich-XT and IC-XT including SRS and ASE noise is determined for a given value of BER (10E-9). Power penalty versus WDM channel spacing at a given BER value (10E-10), link distance and pump power at different WDM channels is also evaluated and presented.

Over 23.43 Gbps visible light communication system based on 9 V integrated RGBP LED modules

In this paper, integrated transmitter modules with 9 V high-voltage light emitting diode (LED) chips and built-in hardware pre-equalization circuits are designed and fabricated for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) visible light communication (VLC) system. The measured −3 dB electrical modulation bandwidths are 764.6 MHz, 929 MHz, 921.5 MHz and 756.6 MHz for the purple, blue, green and red channels, respectively, resulting in an aggregate bandwidth of about 3.37 GHz. Based on polar coding scheme combined with high-order quadrature amplitude modulation and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (QAM-OFDM), experimentally, the maximum aggregate data rate for the offline VLC system exceeds 23.43 Gb/s in 1 m indoor free-space link and the bit error rates (BERs) of all wavelength channels are under 7% pre-forward error correction (pre-FEC) limit of 3.8×10−3. In particular, the blue-ray channel always presents zero BER, i.e. an infinity Q-factor, within the experiment condition range.

Terabit FSO communication based on a soliton microcomb

Free-space optical (FSO) communication technology is a promising approach to establish a secure wireless link, which has the advantages of excellent directionality, large bandwidth, multiple services, low mass and less power requirements, and easy and fast deployments. Increasing the communication capacity is the perennial goal in both scientific and engineer communities. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate a Tbit/s parallel FSO communication system using a soliton microcomb as a multiple wavelength laser source. Two communication terminals are installed in two buildings with a straight-line distance of ∼ 1 km . 102 comb lines are modulated by 10 Gbit/s differential phase-shift keying signals and demodulated using a delay-line interferometer. When the transmitted optical power is amplified to 19.8 dBm, 42 optical channels have optical signal-to-noise ratios higher than 27 dB and bit error rates less than 1 × 10 − 9 . Our experiment shows the feasibility of a wavelength-division multiplexing FSO communication system which suits the ultra-high-speed wireless transmission application scenarios in future satellite-based communications, disaster recovery, defense, last mile problems in networks and remote sensing, and so on.

10.83 Tb/s Over 800 Km Nonlinear Frequency Division Multiplexing WDM Transmission

Nonlinear frequency division multiplexing (NFDM) transmission scheme has attracted great interest in optical fiber communication systems due to its potential for surpassing the Kerr nonlinearity limit. There have been very active studies on single-channel NFDM transmission systems recently. However, up to now, few experiments have validated the feasibility of applying NFDM into wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical communication systems toward high-capacity transmission for wideband coverage. Moreover, the overall performance of the NFDM system is restricted due to many challenges in theoretical design and practical implementation. Novel neural network-based equalization methods contribute to eliminating multi-dimensional crosstalk, hence prompting the NFDM system performance. In this article, we experimentally demonstrate a high-capacity NFDM-WDM transmission system enabled by the newly developed digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms. With data modulation on the continuous spectrum in nonlinear frequency domain, a 25-channel WDM system with polarization division multiplexing (PDM) 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) transmitting over 800 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) is successfully achieved. To mitigate the undesirable correlations between the nonlinear continuous spectral components, a nonlinear spectrum equalization scheme based on artificial neural network (ANN) is utilized in the receiver side DSP. Through this ANN-based spectrum equalization, a 0.63 dB Q <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</sup> -factor gain is achieved compared to the conventional equalization scheme. A record transmission capacity of 10.83 Tb/s is achieved in a 25-channel WDM system over 800 km SSMF, with a remarkable single-channel line rate of 433.3 Gb/s. Our work reports the highest capacity NFDM-WDM transmission up to date and helps to further explore the inherent ability of NFDM to resist fiber channel nonlinearity.

Fast and Accurate Waveform Modeling of Long-Haul Multi-Channel Optical Fiber Transmission Using a Hybrid Model-Data Driven Scheme

The modeling of optical wave propagation in optical fiber is a task of fast and accurate solving the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (NLSE), and can enable the optical system design, digital signal processing verification and fast waveform calculation. Traditional waveform modeling of full-time and full-frequency information is the split-step Fourier method (SSFM), which has long been regarded as challenging in long-haul wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical fiber communication systems because it is extremely time-consuming. Here we propose a linear-nonlinear feature decoupling distributed (FDD) waveform modeling scheme to model long-haul WDM fiber channel, where the channel linear effects are modelled by the NLSE-derived model-driven methods and the nonlinear effects are modelled by the data-driven deep learning methods. Meanwhile, the proposed scheme only focuses on one-span fiber distance fitting, and then recursively transmits the model to achieve the required transmission distance. The proposed modeling scheme is demonstrated to have high accuracy, high computing speeds, and robust generalization abilities for different optical launch powers, modulation formats, channel numbers and transmission distances. The total running time of FDD waveform modeling scheme for 41-channel 1040-km fiber transmission is only 3 minutes versus more than 2 hours using SSFM for each input condition, which achieves a 98% reduction in computing time. Considering the multi-round optimization by adjusting system parameters, the complexity reduction is significant. The results represent a remarkable improvement in nonlinear fiber modeling and open up novel perspectives for solution of NLSE-like partial differential equations and optical fiber physics problems.

Demonstration of a bi-directionally tunable arrayed waveguide grating with ultra-low thermal power using S-shaped architecture and parallel-circuit configuration.

A thermally bi-directionally tunable arrayed waveguide grating (TBDTAWG) is proposed and demonstrated on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. The device is composed of passive and active designs for realizations of an AWG and fine tuning of its filtering responses. Given that the required length difference between adjacent arrayed waveguides for the SOI platform is considerably short (∼3-5 µm) due to a high index contrast, an S-shaped architecture with a larger footprint instead of a rectangular one is employed in the AWG. Bi-directionally tunable functions, i.e., both red- and blue-shift tunable functions, can be achieved by using two triangular thermal-tuning regions with complementary phase distributions in the S-shaped architecture despite using only materials with positive thermo-optic coefficients, i.e., Si and SiO2. Measurement results illustrate that both red- or blue-shifted spectra can be achieved and a linear bi-directional shift-to-power ratio of ±30.5 nm/W as well as a wide tuning range of 8 nm can be obtained under an electrical voltage range of 0-2.5 V, showing an agreement between the measurement results and two-dimensional simulation results. This also shows the potential of the proposed TBDTAWG for automatically stabilizing the spectral responses of AWG-based (de)multiplexers for coarse or dense wavelength division multiplexing communication systems by using a feedback control circuit.

Numerical studying of broadband tunable dispersion compensation based on photonic crystal fiber

We propose a broadband tunable negative dispersion photonic crystal fiber (BT-ND-PCF) for dispersion compensation over the S + C + L wavelength bands. BT-ND-PCF is a dual-core structure in which air holes are arranged with a hexagonal lattice and temperature-sensitive liquid is infiltrated into the air holes of the fourth layer. The performance of BT-ND-PCF is numerically analyzed by the finite element method with an anisotropic perfect matching layer. The results show that BT-ND-PCF has a broadband negative dispersion coefficient of −1533.2 to −2836.4 ps / km / nm over the S + C + L wavelength bands, a dispersion coefficient of −2268.9 ps / km / nm at 1550 nm, and a kappa value of 287.9 nm at 1550 nm, which matches with Corning single-mode fiber 28 (SMF). The residual dispersion (RD) after compensating for the dispersion of 1 km SMF is in the range of −0.22 to +0.16 ps / nm. In addition, the dispersion coefficient is changed by 0.679 ps/km/nm per 1°C by controlling the temperature, which is conducive to the accurate compensation of RD. Due to its unique optical properties, BT-ND-PCF can be used in broadband dispersion compensation for dense wavelength division multiplexing optical fiber communication systems.

Third-Order-Reflective Hybrid Interleaver Based on Fabry-Perot Assisted Michelson Interferometer

We present the design and experimental demonstration of a 3rd-order-reflective hybrid interleaver based on Fabry-Perot (FP) cavity assisted Michelson interferometer (FPA-MI), in which the FP cavity consists of two cascade Sagnac loop reflectors (SLRs). Through comparison, it can be seen that the flatness and rectangularity of interleaver are increased with the increase of order. When the transmission coefficient of the variable SLR is 0.1975 or 0.98, the performance of the interleaver is the best under the lossless condition. The influence of loss and transmission coefficient on the flatness of the interleaver can be evaluated by the dispersion model when the loss is considered, and when the dispersion range is 0.911, the flatness of the interleaver is the best. The reflective FPA-MI interleaver, due to its superior performance, will provide a more promising application in dense wavelength division multiplexing optical communication systems.

Up to 50 Gb/s modulation of an EAM integrated widely tunable DBR laser

An electro-absorption modulator (EAM) integrated widely tunable distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) laser working at 1.5 µm is reported. By utilizing the RF resonance between the bonding wire and the EAM, a 28 GHz modulation bandwidth is obtained. The device is modulated with up to 50 Gb/s NRZ data. At 28 Gb/s, the power penalty to obtain a 10-10 bit error rate (BER) after a 5 Km standard single mode fiber transmission is less than 0.7 dB. Because the DBR material has a long bandgap wavelength, the wavelength tuning range of the laser is larger than 12 nm. The DBR laser is a promising low cost tunable light source for future high capacity wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical communication systems.

Physical Layer Encryption for WDM Optical Communication Systems Using Private Chaotic Phase Scrambling

Protecting the security of optical network is a major worldwide challenge. The conventional schemes for securing communications are based on cryptography at the MAC layer and its higher layers, which are facing a great threat with the development of quantum computers. Optical encryption is a promising way for building security on the physical layer of optical communications. In this work, we propose a novel optical encryption scheme for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) fiber-optic communication systems, by utilizing the private chaotic phase scrambling. Secure transmission of 50 Gbps signal over 50-km standard single-mode fiber is experimentally and numerically demonstrated. The results show that the WDM signal is efficiently encrypted into a noise-like signal, due to the spectral broadening effect of chaotic phase scrambling. Since the processes of encryption and decryption are totally implemented in the optical domain, the proposed scheme can encrypt the entire network traffic with low latency and high speed. Moreover, the proposed encryption scheme is compatible with the existing WDM optical networks, and only one pair of encryption and decryption devices is sufficient to encrypt all WDM channels, thus the scheme can be easily implemented at low hardware cost.

A Novel Ultra-Broadband Polarization Filter Based on a Microstructured Optical Fiber with a Gold-Coated Air Hole.

In this paper, a pentagonal microstructured optical fiber polarization filter by utilizing a surface plasmon resonance effect is proposed. The characteristics of the mode-coupling and filtering of the filter are studied by making use of the full-vector finite element method. The performance of the filter is greatly affected by the structure parameters. The losses of Y and X polarization of the fiber core are 665.97 and 0.17 dB/cm at 1.55 μm, respectively, and the loss ratio is 3917.47. This shows that the filter has a greater loss ratio. Moreover, both the extinction ratio and tolerance are also researched, which shows that the proposed filter has a wider filtering bandwidth and better fabrication tolerance. The designed filter has an important role in wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) and coherent optical fiber communication systems.
